Vince Young’s football career ended far earlier than anyone expected when he left Texas as one of the most celebrated college quarterbacks of his generation. Today, however, Young has not disappeared from football. At 43, he remains closely connected to the University of Texas, where the athletics department currently lists him as a special assistant. He also co-hosts The Stampede, a Texas Longhorns podcast with his former coach Mack Brown, makes regular football appearances, works in real estate development and has spoken about school safety as a cause he supports. Young describes this stage of his life as one of rebuilding after the professional, personal and financial problems that followed his NFL career.
Vince Young is still closely connected to Texas football
Young’s most visible professional connection remains the University of Texas, the place where his football reputation was made. Texas Athletics currently lists him as a “Special Assistant” in its official staff directory alongside other prominent Longhorn figures, including Earl Campbell and Jody Conradt. Young returned to the athletic department in this role in 2021 after having previously worked for the university in community engagement and alumni-related work. His current position keeps him involved with a program that still treats the 2005 national championship quarterback as one of its defining figures.
That connection is more than ceremonial. Young continues to discuss current Texas players publicly and has spent time with quarterback Arch Manning, offering advice while following his development. In July 2026, Young spoke extensively about Manning, Houston Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud and Tennessee Titans quarterback Cam Ward while also discussing the direction of the Longhorns program. He remains particularly enthusiastic about Texas and still speaks about the Titans with an attachment that survived the difficult way his time in Tennessee ended.

What does Vince Young do besides his role at Texas?
Young has expanded into media and business rather than building his post-football identity around one job. He co-hosts The Stampede: A Podcast on the Texas Longhorns alongside Mack Brown and CBS Austin’s Bob Ballou. Episodes have covered everything from the NFL Draft to current Longhorns players, giving Young an outlet where his experience as both a college superstar and former NFL quarterback is directly useful. In March and April 2026, for example, Young and Brown used the program to discuss the draft process and what players experience after being selected.
Young also told KPRC 2 in 2026 that he stays busy with real estate development and work connected to school safety. He continues to make paid and promotional appearances and remains involved in Houston and Austin football circles. That is a different life from the one many viewers remember from his Titans years, when his future seemed almost entirely tied to whether he could remain an NFL starting quarterback.
When did Vince Young actually stop playing football?
Young’s last NFL regular-season appearances came with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2011, but he spent several more years trying to extend his career. After Tennessee released him, Young backed up Michael Vick in Philadelphia and later had offseason opportunities with the Buffalo Bills, Green Bay Packers and Cleveland Browns. None produced a lasting return to an NFL roster. By 2014, Young was publicly describing himself as retired while also leaving open the possibility of returning for the right guaranteed opportunity.

He made one final serious attempt in 2017 when he signed with the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League. Young insisted he was approaching Saskatchewan as a genuine football opportunity rather than simply using the CFL as a route back to the NFL. His comeback ended before a regular-season game, however, after he tore his hamstring during training camp and was released in June 2017. He has not returned to professional football since.

Why did his NFL career end so early?
There was never one simple reason. Young entered the NFL as the No. 3 pick in the 2006 draft, won Offensive Rookie of the Year and reached two Pro Bowls, so his professional career was not an immediate failure. His problems accumulated instead through injuries, inconsistent play, an increasingly damaged relationship with Titans coach Jeff Fisher and difficulties handling the pressure that followed him from college football into the NFL. The relationship with Fisher finally broke apart after an emotional 2010 loss to Washington, when Young was injured, threw his equipment into the stands and argued with Fisher in the locker room.
Tennessee decided after that season that Young was no longer part of its future. He never again established himself as a permanent NFL starter. Later attempts with Philadelphia and several preseason rosters gave him chances to continue playing, but by then the combination of his reputation, off-field distractions and competition for roster spots made a full comeback increasingly difficult.
What happened to Vince Young after his financial troubles?
Young’s post-NFL transition also included serious financial problems. Despite receiving $26 million in guaranteed money in his Titans rookie contract, he became involved in disputes over spending, financial management and a high-interest loan taken out during the 2011 NFL lockout. In 2014, he briefly filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection while contesting debt connected to that loan. His attorneys later reached a settlement with the lender, and Young asked the court to dismiss the bankruptcy case.
His financial story was complicated by competing claims. Young accused former advisers of mishandling millions of dollars, while those advisers denied wrongdoing and argued that his own spending contributed heavily to the problem. The disputes were eventually settled rather than producing a single court finding explaining where every dollar went. Young has more recently spoken about rebuilding his brand and cleaning up problems from his earlier life rather than pretending those years never happened.
Why is Vince Young telling his story again now?
Netflix is putting Young’s rise and fall back into the spotlight with Untold: The Testimony of Vince Young. The documentary premieres August 25, 2026 and is officially described as examining the injuries, conflicts and sudden loss that complicated a career once expected to make Young one of the NFL’s next major stars. Director John Henion has said the film is intended to look beyond the famous Rose Bowl highlights and the simplified version of Young’s NFL collapse.
Young has said the timing was deliberate. He did not want to tell the story simply because other people wanted him to, and he now feels he has reached a point where he can discuss what happened while showing where he ended up. That makes his current life important to the documentary’s larger question. Vince Young did not rebuild the NFL career people once predicted for him, but he did build a life that keeps him connected to football, Texas and the next generation of players without requiring another comeback attempt.
