Roger McMillan‘s role in Angel in the Rubble: The Genelle Guzman Story begins outside the place where the movie’s most dramatic events occur. Genelle is trapped beneath the remains of the North Tower while Roger is left with the helpless uncertainty experienced by thousands of relatives and partners on September 11. He does not know whether she escaped, whether she is injured or whether he will ever see her again.

The real Roger’s story did not end when rescuers finally pulled Genelle from the debris. He remained beside her through the long recovery that followed, and the couple’s relationship quickly became one of the major ways Genelle rebuilt her life.

Roger Was Waiting for Genelle While She Was Still in the North Tower

Roger and Genelle were already in a relationship before September 11, 2001. Both had roots in Trinidad, and Roger was living and working in New York.

At the time, Roger worked as a pressman for a direct-mail company. As news of the attack spread, he tried to determine what was happening to Genelle inside the World Trade Center.

Genelle had initially remained at her workplace because employees had received confusing information about whether they should evacuate. Roger received a message indicating that she was staying where she was, leaving him terrified when the North Tower later collapsed.

What he did not know was that Genelle had eventually begun evacuating. She had reached approximately the 13th floor when the tower came down. Roger would not learn until the following day that she had survived.

Roger Stayed With Genelle Through Her Hospital Recovery

Genelle’s rescue was followed by a difficult medical period. Her leg had been badly crushed, and she underwent several procedures as doctors tried to prevent amputation. Roger became one of the people consistently beside her at Bellevue Hospital.

That period also changed the way they thought about their relationship. Genelle had spent hours beneath the rubble thinking about the people she loved and the things she would change if she survived. Marriage was one of the decisions that followed.

After Genelle left the hospital, Roger proposed, and they did not wait long to formalize the relationship.

The couple married at City Hall on November 7, 2001. Genelle was still recovering physically and using assistance to move around. Their first ceremony was intentionally simple, but it would not be their only wedding celebration.

Roger and Genelle Had a Larger Wedding in 2002

In July 2002, Roger and Genelle celebrated their marriage again with a larger event at Bridgewaters in Manhattan.

The wedding attracted considerable media attention because Genelle had become one of the best-known survivors of the World Trade Center collapse. Yet the occasion was also part of the couple’s attempt to move their relationship beyond the attacks. They subsequently built their family life on Long Island.

Genelle had a daughter, Kimberly, from an earlier relationship, and she and Roger later welcomed daughters Kaydi and Kellie. Roger has largely avoided becoming a public personality despite his wife’s continued appearances discussing her survival.

That difference is visible even now. Genelle regularly speaks about September 11 and appears at commemorations, while Roger has generally remained a private figure whose public profile exists mostly through his relationship with her.

What Does Roger McMillan Do for a Living?

Roger’s work has changed since the time of the attacks. In 2001, contemporary reporting identified him as a pressman working for a direct-mail company. By 2021, public reporting placed Roger with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey at John F. Kennedy International Airport, where he was working in an environmental unit.

More recent coverage of the family has not established a different current position, so it would be misleading to assign Roger a new job without confirmation.

His connection to the Port Authority is notable because Genelle also continued working within the organization after 9/11. Her current role is associated with LaGuardia Airport.

Roger has not used Genelle’s survival to build an entertainment career, and there is little indication that he has wanted the sort of public attention that naturally follows her at anniversary events.

Are Roger McMillan and Genelle Guzman Still Married?

Yes. Current 2026 reporting continues to identify Roger and Genelle as husband and wife, more than two decades after their first City Hall ceremony.

Their marriage has inevitably been discussed through the lens of September 11, but their shared life has included challenges unrelated to the attacks as well.

Genelle has previously spoken about Roger becoming seriously ill with COVID-19 during the pandemic. She cared for him at home, even as he reportedly encouraged her to protect herself from exposure.

The episode created a striking reversal of their earlier roles. Roger had spent Genelle’s hospital recovery beside her after the most traumatic experience of her life. Years later, she became his caregiver. The couple have otherwise kept much of their domestic life private.

Where Is Roger McMillan Today?

Roger continues to live a relatively low-profile life with Genelle and their family on Long Island. Unlike Genelle, he does not appear to maintain a substantial public-facing career built around the 9/11 story.

That privacy makes the answer to “where is Roger now?” less dramatic than the events Lifetime recreates, but it is also what makes his part of the story distinctive.

The movie necessarily concentrates the emotional weight of Roger’s role into the hours and weeks surrounding Genelle’s survival. Real life continued well beyond that point.

Roger stayed through the rehabilitation, marriage, children, anniversaries and ordinary years that followed. Twenty-five years after he waited to learn whether Genelle had escaped the North Tower, current reporting still finds the two of them together.
