What’s Your Number? turns Ally Darling’s romantic history into a problem she thinks she has to solve mathematically. After reading a magazine article suggesting that women who have been with more than 20 men are less likely to marry, Ally becomes convinced that one of her former boyfriends must secretly be the person she is supposed to end up with.
That search eventually brings her closer to the one man who was never part of the plan. Colin Shea begins as the neighbor helping Ally track down her exes, but their friendship gradually becomes the healthiest relationship she has in the movie. The ending finally forces Ally to choose between the apparently perfect Jake Adams and the person around whom she can actually be herself.

Why Does Ally Go Back to Jake Adams?
Jake represents everything Ally thinks she is supposed to want. He is successful, attractive, socially polished and, most importantly, someone from her past who would not increase the number she has become so obsessed with.
Colin actually finds Jake before Ally does, but he keeps the information from her. By that stage, Colin has developed feelings for Ally and believes something real is forming between them, so he is reluctant to help her reconnect with the man she considers her ideal ex. When Ally discovers what Colin has done, she feels betrayed and the growing relationship between them falls apart.

Ally then reconnects with Jake and takes him to her sister Daisy’s wedding. On paper, it looks as though her entire plan has worked: she has found an old boyfriend who has become exactly the type of partner her mother wants her to marry. The problem is that being with Jake requires Ally to keep performing a more acceptable version of herself.
Why Does Ally Break Up With Jake?
The turning point comes at Daisy’s wedding. While dancing with her father, Ally is reminded that she should build her life around what actually makes her happy rather than continually changing herself to satisfy other people’s expectations. That realization becomes important when she later talks to Jake about her romantic past.
Ally tells Jake that her number is 20. Jake assumes she must be joking and reacts negatively to the idea that she could actually have had that many previous partners.
His reaction finally makes Ally understand what has been wrong with the relationship. Jake may look perfect from the outside, but Ally cannot be completely honest around him without worrying that he will judge her.
Colin is different. He has seen Ally at her messiest, knows exactly why she has spent weeks tracking down old boyfriends and never requires her to pretend that her past belongs to someone else.
That difference matters more than Jake’s status or her mother’s approval, so Ally leaves the wedding to find Colin. Film analysis of the ending has similarly pointed to Jake’s reaction as the moment Ally recognizes that the person she wants is the one who accepts her rather than the man who merely fits her idea of a perfect husband.
Do Ally and Colin End Up Together?
Yes. Ally and Colin end the movie together. Finding him is unnecessarily complicated because Colin is performing with his band at a wedding and Ally does not know which one. She rushes around Boston checking different wedding receptions until she finally locates him.
When Ally reaches Colin, she stops worrying about whether being with him will push her beyond the arbitrary limit that started the entire story. She tells him that she wants someone who accepts who she actually is, including the parts of her life she has spent the movie trying to hide or rewrite.

Colin reciprocates her feelings. The movie therefore ends its central romance not by discovering that one of Ally’s ex-boyfriends has changed, but by revealing that looking backward was the wrong solution from the beginning. The right relationship was developing while she was busy searching for an old one.
Why Did Colin Hide Jake From Ally?
Colin’s decision to keep Jake’s contact information secret is wrong, but the movie gives him an understandable emotional reason for doing it.
He realizes that he has fallen for Ally before she fully accepts her own feelings for him. Jake, meanwhile, represents the kind of man Colin believes Ally genuinely wants, and he fears that giving her Jake’s information will immediately end whatever has been developing between them.
Instead of telling Ally how he feels, Colin tries to delay the problem. That backfires because Ally sees the omission as proof that he has manipulated her search.
The separation serves an important purpose in the ending. Ally needs to experience the relationship she thought she wanted with Jake before she can choose Colin without wondering whether she simply settled because the search failed. Once she has Jake and willingly walks away from him, her decision about Colin becomes her own.

What Does the Phone Call at the End Mean?
The movie adds one final joke involving Ally’s famous number. The morning after Ally and Colin get together, one of the men Ally previously counted among her romantic partners calls and reveals that they never actually slept together. That means Ally’s total was one lower than she believed. As a result, Colin is technically number 20 rather than number 21.
Ally celebrates the discovery because it means she has found the person she wants while still remaining under the number she spent the entire movie worrying about. It is deliberately ironic because she has already learned that the number should not matter.
The ending lets the movie have the joke both ways. Ally emotionally rejects the idea that her romantic history determines whether she deserves a lasting relationship, and then immediately learns that she never crossed the supposed limit anyway.
What Does the Ending of What’s Your Number? Mean?
Ally spends most of the movie treating her past as something that needs to be corrected. Her solution is to search through old relationships and hope that one failed because she simply met the right person at the wrong time. Instead, every reunion teaches her why those relationships belonged in the past.
Jake is the final and most important example. He seems like proof that her theory works until Ally realizes that choosing him would mean returning to the same habit that caused many of her earlier problems: changing herself to become whatever her partner expects. Colin never asks her to do that.
That is why the real resolution is not the revelation that Colin is technically number 20. It is Ally becoming comfortable enough with herself that she would choose him even if he were number 21.
Contemporary and later commentary on the film has identified the same idea at the heart of its conclusion: the number matters far less than finding someone around whom Ally does not have to hide who she is.
The final phone call gives the story its last punchline, but Ally has already answered the more important question. She does not need to find the perfect man somewhere in her past. She needs to stop allowing other people’s expectations to decide what her future should look like.
