Unabomber Cast and Character Guide

Unabomber is less interested in presenting Ted Kaczynski’s life as one continuous biography than in putting two versions of him beside each other. Jacob Tremblay plays the teenage Harvard prodigy, while Michael Laurence appears as the older man being sought decades later. Between those timelines are Russell Crowe’s Professor Henry Murray, Annabelle Wallis’ Christiana Morgan and Shailene Woodley’s Joanne Miller, three characters representing very different parts of the story. Some are direct portrayals of real people, while one of the movie’s most prominent characters was created for the adaptation. That mixture makes the Netflix film’s cast worth separating from the historical record rather than treating every name on screen as a real participant in the case.

Jacob Tremblay as young Ted Kaczynski

Jacob Tremblay plays Ted Kaczynski during his Harvard years, beginning when the academically gifted teenager enters the university at just 16. This section of the film concentrates on his social isolation, intellectual confidence and involvement in the psychological research overseen by Henry Murray. Director Janus Metz has said he wanted an actor who could communicate both Kaczynski’s intelligence and the vulnerability of someone considerably younger than the students around him.

Tremblay approached the part by resisting the temptation to play Kaczynski as a familiar historical caricature. He told Netflix that he wanted the young man to feel like a real person and drew partly on his own experience of beginning a professional career surrounded by adults. Tremblay is best known for Room and has also appeared in Wonder, Luca and Sovereign, but Unabomber places him in considerably more restrained and psychologically demanding material.

Michael Laurence plays the older Kaczynski

The later Kaczynski is played by Michael Laurence, rather than using Tremblay under extensive age makeup. The Boston Globe confirms that Laurence portrays the older man living in the remote Montana cabin during the 1990s investigation. That casting choice gives the two timelines a visible separation while allowing Tremblay’s performance to remain concentrated on the Harvard years that form the movie’s psychological backstory.

Laurence’s presence is easy to miss in Netflix’s early promotional material because the marketing has naturally concentrated on Tremblay, Crowe and Woodley. Full cast listings, however, credit both Tremblay and Laurence as Ted Kaczynski. The film can therefore compare the young student and the older recluse without asking one actor to bridge almost four decades of physical change.

Russell Crowe as Professor Henry Murray

Russell Crowe plays Henry A. Murray, the real Harvard psychologist whose controversial research forms one of the film’s central historical threads. Murray was an influential figure in personality psychology and worked at the Harvard Psychological Clinic, where Kaczynski participated in a long-running study while he was a student. Unabomber presents that academic relationship as important to understanding the younger Kaczynski, although the broader historical question of how much those experiments influenced his later choices remains debated.

Crowe brings an immediate authority to Murray, which the film uses to make the young Ted’s position feel even more uneven. The Oscar-winning actor is known for Gladiator and A Beautiful Mind, while more recent work has included Nuremberg and other character-driven dramas. Netflix’s promotional material specifically positions Murray opposite Tremblay’s Ted rather than treating him as a peripheral professor, making their scenes one of the main anchors of the Harvard timeline.

Shailene Woodley as Joanne Miller

Shailene Woodley plays FBI agent Joanne Miller, who anchors the 1990s investigation. Miller studies Kaczynski’s writings and develops a relationship with members of his family as investigators try to identify the person they have been seeking. Metz has described empathy as an important part of the character, giving Woodley’s storyline a different energy from the young Ted’s more inward-looking Harvard experience.

Unlike Murray and Kaczynski, Joanne Miller is fictional. Entertainment Weekly identifies her as a fictional FBI agent, and other reporting describes the character as a way of concentrating a much larger federal investigation into one dramatic point of view. The real UNABOM investigation involved an extensive task force rather than one agent personally carrying every part of the search shown in the movie.

Woodley is familiar from The Descendants, the Divergent films, Big Little Lies and Ferrari. Unabomber gives her a procedural role that is deliberately placed in parallel with Tremblay’s performance, since both Joanne and Ted are presented as people unusually committed to following their own interpretations of the information in front of them. Netflix has made Woodley one of the three headline stars alongside Crowe and Tremblay.

Annabelle Wallis as Christiana Morgan

Annabelle Wallis plays Christiana Morgan, and unlike Joanne Miller, Morgan was a real historical figure. She worked closely with Henry Murray at the Harvard Psychological Clinic and became an important researcher in the study of personality. Harvard-related historical material also credits Morgan and Murray with developing the Thematic Apperception Test, while Netflix describes her as Murray’s academic partner and co-director of the clinic.

Wallis is known for Peaky Blinders, The Mummy and Malignant, and her role in Unabomber places her firmly inside the Harvard portion of the film. Morgan gives that storyline a second academic figure beyond Murray and helps establish the larger psychological research environment surrounding Ted. The character is therefore based on a real scholar rather than being created simply to provide Crowe’s Murray with an on-screen colleague.

Matthew Kevin Anderson as David Kaczynski

Matthew Kevin Anderson plays David Kaczynski, Ted’s younger brother, who becomes essential to the later investigation. Historically, David and his wife began to suspect that Ted’s writing resembled the manifesto published during the case, and information supplied by the family helped investigators narrow their focus. The FBI’s own history of the case credits David with providing letters and documents whose language could be compared with the published text.

Anderson’s casting places the family directly inside Woodley’s half of the film instead of leaving the investigation entirely within federal offices. William Kosovic is separately credited as eight-year-old David, indicating that the film also reaches into earlier Kaczynski family history. Bruce Ramsay appears as Ted’s father, Turk Kaczynski, while Michelle LeBlanc is credited as his mother, Wanda.

The supporting cast includes real and fictional figures

Tanya Clarke plays Susan Mosser, while Michael Buie is credited as Tom Mosser, and Mark Camacho appears as Bill Ford. David Webster plays Roy, with some cast databases identifying the role as Roy Wright, while Emily Le appears as Agent Tess Vu. These supporting parts broaden both the personal history and investigation surrounding the two central timelines without receiving the same advance promotional attention as Tremblay, Crowe, Woodley and Wallis.

Netflix also lists Alexander Ludwig, Steven Ogg and Marc Menchaca among the principal ensemble, but the studio has not publicly identified their character names in its pre-release cast material. Rather than assigning them roles based on speculation, they are best treated as important supporting players whose exact places in the story become clearer in the finished film. Ludwig is known for Vikings and The Hunger Games, Ogg for The Walking Dead and Snowpiercer, and Menchaca for Ozark and Dexter: Resurrection.

The cast reflects Unabomber’s two-part structure

The casting works because the movie is not designed as a conventional cradle-to-capture biography. Tremblay, Crowe and Wallis carry the Harvard story, while Laurence, Woodley and Anderson move the film toward the later investigation and the role Kaczynski’s family played in identifying him. The separation allows each period to have its own group of characters rather than forcing every major actor into both halves of the film.

It also explains why viewers should be careful about assuming that every character is historical. Henry Murray, Christiana Morgan, Ted Kaczynski and David Kaczynski are real people, while Joanne Miller is a fictionalized investigative character created for the film. Unabomber uses that combination of direct portrayals and dramatic compression to turn a sprawling real case into a 97-minute feature rather than a documentary reconstruction.
