The Traitors: New Blood Episode 1 Recap and Ending Explained: Who Are the First Traitors?

The Traitors: New Blood begins with a major change to the familiar American version of the competition. Instead of reality stars and celebrities walking into Alan Cumming’s Scottish castle with established reputations, 22 everyday Americans arrive knowing almost nothing about one another.

That makes first impressions unusually important in Episode 1, titled A New Dawn Is Rising. Jobs, personalities and even small comments quickly become pieces of evidence as the contestants try to decide who they can trust, while Alan secretly gives two players the roles everyone else will spend the season trying to uncover.

The New Blood Cast Starts Reading Each Other Immediately

The contestants barely have time to settle in before the social game begins. Some players openly talk about wanting to become Traitors, while others begin studying the people around them and thinking about which personalities might be dangerous later.

Kim Daily makes one of the boldest early strategic decisions. Although she is actually a lawyer from Houston, Kim tells the group that she is a basketball coach. Her plan appears designed to hide a profession that might make people see her as analytical, argumentative or particularly dangerous at the Round Table.

The problem is that the fake profession immediately gives Kim something extra to maintain. Even before the episode is over, other contestants are already paying attention to whether everyone’s stories sound believable.

Who Gets the First Shields?

The premiere also sends the group into its first major physical mission. The contestants have to retrieve valuable cargo while adding money to the eventual prize fund, with shields available to protect certain players from the first overnight elimination.

Victor Vollbrechthausen quickly prioritizes securing a shield for himself. It keeps him safe in the short term, but his willingness to focus on his own protection also attracts attention from players who wonder whether he is playing too aggressively this early.

That decision becomes important because New Blood immediately establishes that even seemingly sensible gameplay can be interpreted as suspicious. With nobody carrying a reputation from another reality series, the group has little else to work with besides behavior inside the castle.

Who Are the First Traitors in New Blood?

Alan eventually gathers everyone at the Round Table for the moment that defines the premiere. He secretly chooses Joe Vanella and Tomica Adams as the first two Traitors.

Joe, a funeral director from New York, had openly wanted the role and immediately embraces the opportunity. Tomica, a United Airlines captain from the Boston area, had also said before the competition that she wanted to experience playing as a Traitor.

Their approaches already look very different. Tomica appears much more interested in staying composed, while Joe’s naturally loud and enthusiastic personality makes it difficult for him to disappear into the group.

That does not mean Joe is automatically doomed, but Episode 1 makes his biggest challenge obvious. Becoming a Traitor has given him exactly what he wanted, and now he has to stop looking quite so excited about it.

Why Are There Only Two Traitors?

Joe and Tomica are not meant to remain the only Traitors. The premiere introduces an important New Blood twist by giving the pair influence over who might eventually join them. They select Katie Fites and Xavier Scruggs as two potential Accomplices, putting both contestants into a secret competition connected to the third Traitor position.

Katie and Xavier do not simply become Traitors immediately. Instead, they are placed in an unusual middle ground where their performances can determine who earns a place alongside Joe and Tomica.

That explains why Alan begins the season with only two confirmed Traitors. New Blood is making the third position part of the game itself rather than simply assigning all three roles at the first Round Table.

Why Does Kim Become an Immediate Target?

Kim’s decision to hide her real career quickly works against her. Instead of making her seem harmless, the basketball-coach story gives Joe and Tomica a reason to see her as potentially dangerous. A person willing to conceal something significant about herself on the first day may be exactly the kind of Faithful capable of thinking strategically later.

By the end of Episode 1, Kim has become one of the players in serious danger. The irony is that she lied about her profession to make herself look less threatening, but the move has the opposite effect.

The premiere therefore ends with several layers of deception already operating at once. Joe and Tomica are secretly running the game from the Traitors’ side, Katie and Xavier have been pulled into a hidden battle for the third position, and Kim’s attempt to protect herself has instead put her directly in danger.
