The Traitors: New Blood has filled Alan Cumming’s castle with people from unusually varied professions, but Joe Vanella arrived with one of the most memorable jobs in the cast. The 44-year-old Long Island native works as a funeral director, a profession he believes has prepared him surprisingly well for a game built around pressure, suspicion and difficult conversations.

Joe is from Wantagh, New York, and comes from a family with a long history in the funeral business. He is also a husband and father of three, giving the energetic contestant a life outside the castle that is very different from the deception surrounding him on the NBC and Peacock competition.

Joe Vanella Is a Fourth-Generation Funeral Director

Joe is not someone who simply happened to enter the funeral industry later in life. He is a fourth-generation funeral director whose family has been involved in the profession for decades.

In an interview with Newsday, Joe explained that his father operated funeral homes in Manhattan and Oceanside, while the family’s involvement in the business goes back to his great-grandfather. Joe grew up around a profession centered on helping families through emotionally difficult moments.

That experience is one reason he believes he can handle The Traitors. Joe told Entertainment Weekly that his work requires him to communicate with people in emotionally charged situations, something that could become useful when accusations and disagreements begin taking over the Roundtable.

Where Is Joe Vanella From?

Joe is from Wantagh on Long Island, New York. Newsday reported that he grew up first in West Hempstead and later Rockville Centre before moving to Wantagh in 2022.

His Long Island personality is also something Joe openly considers part of his game. He entered the castle confident that he could recognize questionable behavior and pressure other contestants when their explanations did not add up.

Joe described himself before the season as someone likely to be the loudest person in the room. That could make him difficult to overlook, but being memorable can work in two directions on The Traitors. A strong personality can influence the group, while too much attention can also create suspicion.

Did Joe Want to Be a Traitor or Faithful?

Before entering the game, Joe said he would prefer to become a Traitor.

His reasoning was strategic rather than simply enjoying the deceptive side of the competition. Traitors cannot be eliminated through the show’s nighttime “murders,” meaning Joe believed the role would give him more control over his path through the castle.

If selected as a Faithful, however, he felt his professional experience could still help. Joe planned to pay close attention to changes in behavior, inconsistent stories and people who appeared uncomfortable under pressure.

That combination makes his funeral-director background more relevant than it might initially appear. His everyday job is not about solving mysteries, but it does require calm communication at moments when emotions are unusually high.

Joe Vanella Has a Wife and Three Children

Away from television, Joe shares three children with his wife. He has kept much of his family life separate from his Traitors profile, with most of the attention surrounding his casting focused on his profession and personality.

For viewers meeting an entirely civilian cast for the first time, Joe has the type of background that is easy to remember. Whether being the outspoken funeral director helps him build trust or paints a target on him is what makes his New Blood journey worth following.
