The Daughter I Gave Away Cast Guide: Who Plays Cynthia, Rebecca and Maureen?

Lifetime’s “The Daughter I Gave Away” begins with a mother trying to find the child she believed she had safely placed for adoption years earlier. Romina D’Ugo leads the thriller as Cynthia Robins, who learns that the adoption she thought she understood may have been built on deception. Kelly Penner plays her husband Andrew Masters, while Laura Afelskie appears as the teenage girl at the center of Cynthia’s investigation. Jenny Young, Arwen Humphreys and Fuad Ahmed round out a cast in which several apparently ordinary characters become increasingly important as Cynthia gets closer to the truth. Lifetime officially bills D’Ugo and Penner as the movie’s stars.

The John Bradshaw-directed movie premiered in the United States on September 1, 2024. Because some of the credited character names themselves reveal parts of the mystery, the cast guide below contains story spoilers.

Romina D’Ugo as Cynthia Robins

Romina D’Ugo carries the movie as Cynthia Robins, the woman whose past suddenly becomes her present again. Cynthia gave up her daughter when she was a teenager, believing adoption would provide the child with a life she could not offer at the time. Years later, she learns that the girl is missing and refuses to remain a distant biological parent once there is a possibility that her daughter is in danger.

D’Ugo is a strong fit for a Lifetime lead because Cynthia spends much of the story switching between fear, suspicion and stubborn determination rather than simply reacting to information other people give her. The Canadian actress has appeared in “12 Monkeys,” “Coyote,” “Nurses,” “Designated Survivor” and “Law & Order: SVU.” Earlier in her career, she also appeared in “Degrassi: The Next Generation” and the dance drama “Turn the Beat Around.”

Emma Nelles plays the younger version of Cynthia. Her scenes establish the teenage decision that drives the entire mystery, allowing the movie to show Cynthia before years of regret and unanswered questions changed the way she understands what happened. Nelles is officially credited as Young Cynthia.

Kelly Penner as Andrew Masters

Kelly Penner plays Andrew Masters, Cynthia’s husband and one of the few people she can rely on once the adoption story begins falling apart. Unlike Cynthia, Andrew has no biological connection to the missing girl, but he becomes part of the search because he understands that finding her is no longer something Cynthia can simply choose to forget. Apple TV and Lifetime both place Penner alongside D’Ugo at the top of the cast.

Penner has appeared in Canadian and American television productions including “Reign,” “Pretty Hard Cases” and “What We Do in the Shadows.” His role here is less flashy than the movie’s more suspicious supporting characters, but Andrew provides something Cynthia badly needs as the investigation becomes stranger: another person willing to believe that her concerns are worth pursuing.

Laura Afelskie as Rebecca and Lexi

Laura Afelskie has the most revealing credit in the cast list. She is credited as Rebecca, Lexi and Teen Girl, directly connecting her to the daughter Cynthia has been searching for. That information is deliberately more complicated than a straightforward “missing daughter” role, since the movie’s mystery depends on Cynthia discovering that the identity and adoption history she was given do not fit neatly together.

Afelskie has subsequently become recognizable to Netflix viewers as Runa in “BET.” Her other credits include the limited series “Painkiller,” “Little Girl in the Window” and “Our Mother’s Secret Affair.” “The Daughter I Gave Away” gives her an unusually difficult position in the story because Rebecca is both the person Cynthia desperately wants to protect and a young woman who has grown up with her own understanding of who her family is.

That distinction keeps the character from functioning solely as an object for Cynthia to recover. Biology may explain why Cynthia feels responsible for her, but it does not erase the years in which Rebecca built a life without knowing Cynthia as her mother.

Jenny Young as Maureen and Nancy

Jenny Young plays Maureen and Nancy, another double credit that matters to the central mystery. Official cast listings consistently credit Young under both names, signaling that the two identities are connected rather than representing unrelated characters.

Young’s performance becomes increasingly important as Cynthia investigates what happened around the original adoption. The movie initially asks viewers to concentrate on finding the missing teenager, but Maureen’s place in the story gradually redirects attention toward a more disturbing question: whether Cynthia ever knew the truth about where her baby went in the first place.

Young has appeared in “Station Eleven,” “The Lake” and “Ruby and the Well,” where she played Shirley Janacek. She also spent six seasons working on CBC’s radio drama “Afghanada” before expanding further into film and television roles.

Arwen Humphreys as Billie

Arwen Humphreys plays Billie, one of the authority figures Cynthia encounters while looking for answers. Billie initially belongs to the procedural side of the story, the part where Cynthia is trying to convince other people that what she has uncovered deserves serious attention. Humphreys is officially listed among the movie’s principal supporting cast.

Humphreys is far better known for a very different kind of mystery series. She has played Margaret Brackenreid on “Murdoch Mysteries” for years, developing from a recurring supporting character into one of the show’s familiar faces. Her other screen credits include “Rookie Blue,” “Saving Hope” and “Hudson & Rex.”

Fuad Ahmed as Emmett

Fuad Ahmed portrays Emmett, another character who becomes involved as Cynthia’s search expands beyond the people closest to her. Ahmed’s supporting role sits within the broader network of people Cynthia has to question and evaluate as she tries to separate genuine help from misleading information. He is officially credited as Emmett by Apple TV, Rotten Tomatoes and other major cast databases.

Ahmed has appeared in “Painkiller,” “Christmas Casanova,” “Late Bloomer,” “A Not So Royal Christmas” and “Jazz Ramsey: A K-9 Mystery.” His filmography includes a mixture of Canadian television movies, comedy and drama, making him another familiar face within the Ontario-produced ensemble.

Who Else Is in The Daughter I Gave Away?

The supporting cast extends beyond Cynthia’s immediate family and the people directly connected to the adoption. Jordan Kronis plays Jeremy, while Stephanie Herrera appears as Director Sarah Levin. Kronis has also appeared in “Chucky,” “Breakthrough” and “Ballistic,” while Herrera’s credits include “Romance With a Twist,” “Holiday Heritage” and “Family History Mysteries: Buried Past.”

Rachel Kramer plays Jenny, Thomas Mitchell is credited as Gary/Burly Man, and Mark Weatherly portrays Sheriff Mullins. Together, these smaller roles fill out the law enforcement, family and investigative sides of Cynthia’s search.

What makes the cast slightly more interesting than the average Lifetime missing-person thriller is the way its credits reflect the mystery itself. Laura Afelskie being listed as Rebecca and Lexi, and Jenny Young as Maureen and Nancy, are not meaningless alternate names. They point toward a story built around identity, motherhood and the difference between the life Cynthia believed her daughter received and what actually happened after she handed over her baby. D’Ugo remains the emotional center, but it is the women around Cynthia who gradually transform her search from a missing-person case into something much more personal.
