The Celebrity Traitors returns for Season 2 with exactly the kind of opening that makes Claudia Winkleman’s castle such a difficult place to play a sensible game. Twenty-one celebrities arrive knowing that some of them will eventually be asked to deceive everyone else, but the premiere wastes little time making the usual rules feel unstable. Maya Jama and Richard E. Grant become the first two Traitors, Richard almost immediately creates a problem that could expose both of them, and the first mission starts revealing which contestants naturally take control. By the end of Episode 1, however, the biggest question is no longer simply whether Richard can survive his own mistake. James Acaster and Amol Rajan are lying in separate coffins, with one about to become a Traitor and the other about to leave the game.

Claudia Starts the Season With a Coffin and a Trust Test
The premiere establishes its gothic mood before anyone has even reached the castle. Claudia is carried into a church inside a coffin before emerging in front of the new celebrity lineup, an entrance that turns out to be more than decorative because coffins will return at the most important point of the episode. The players are then asked to decide who among them appears most trustworthy, and Julie Hesmondhalgh quickly becomes the group’s choice.
Julie receives two shields that provide protection from the first murder. She keeps one for herself and gives the second to Joe Lycett, leaving the rest of the cast vulnerable once the Traitors begin making their decisions. It is an early reminder of how quickly reputations can form in the game, as Julie has barely had time to establish herself before the group begins viewing her as one of the safest people in the castle.
Maya Jama and Richard E. Grant Become the First Traitors
Claudia does not begin the season by selecting a complete group of three Traitors. Instead, Maya Jama and Richard E. Grant receive the first two cloaks, with the pair eventually learning that they will have some control over who joins them. Both celebrities had expressed interest in taking on the role, although Richard’s enthusiasm is particularly difficult to miss.
Maya immediately appears to be the calmer member of the partnership. Richard, on the other hand, reacts like someone who has just been handed the role he desperately wanted and momentarily forgets that the most important part of being a Traitor is keeping it secret. That difference between them quickly becomes one of the defining elements of the premiere.

Richard Nearly Gives Away His Entire Game
Richard’s first major mistake arrives almost immediately. Joe Lycett asks him whether he is a Faithful or a Traitor, and Richard simply tells him that he is a Traitor. It is such an unexpectedly direct answer that the people around him do not immediately know how to interpret it. Richard then tries to reverse course, but his first answer has already given everyone something to discuss.
Strangely, the confession does not immediately destroy him. Some of the celebrities reason that a genuine Traitor would never openly announce their identity, making Richard’s answer seem almost too reckless to be true. Jerry Hall, who has known Richard for decades, is particularly willing to believe that he might simply be acting because he had wanted the Traitor role so badly.
James Acaster and Amol Rajan are much less willing to dismiss what happened. Both become increasingly interested in Richard’s behavior, creating a problem that will directly influence the Traitors’ decision at the end of the episode.
James Blunt and Ross Kemp Lead the First Mission
The first major challenge moves the celebrities away from the castle for a pirate-themed mission that requires them to work together while racing against time. James Blunt and Ross Kemp naturally take on leadership roles as the group attempts to complete the challenge and increase the charity prize fund.
Their efforts prove successful, with the celebrities adding £15,000 to the overall pot. The mission also provides an early glimpse at how differently the players are approaching the game. Ross looks confident while directing the challenge but becomes considerably more nervous when ordinary interactions back at the castle start looking suspicious.
Bella Ramsey placing a captain’s hat on his head makes Ross wonder whether the gesture could somehow be connected to a murder. Leigh-Anne Pinnock touching his arm produces another moment of concern. His paranoia is amusing, but it also shows how previous seasons have changed the way contestants think about seemingly harmless actions inside the castle.

Why Are James Acaster and Amol Rajan in the Coffins?
James and Amol end up in the coffins because Maya and Richard select them as the two candidates for the third Traitor position. Claudia reveals that one of the men will become the newest Traitor, while the other will become the first person eliminated by the Traitors.
The decision gives both James and Amol an unusual opportunity. Instead of simply learning their fate without warning, they are allowed to make a case for why Maya and Richard should recruit them. That creates a difficult choice because both men are already dangerous to Richard’s game.
James has taken Richard’s confession seriously and appears increasingly convinced that he really is a Traitor. Amol has also been applying pressure and questioning Richard’s behavior. Recruiting either man could therefore transform a suspicious Faithful into an ally, while eliminating the other could remove another person capable of directing attention toward Richard.
James points out the danger of eliminating him. If he disappears immediately after publicly expressing suspicion about Richard, the other Faithfuls may wonder whether he was removed because he was getting too close to the truth. Amol, meanwhile, argues that his reputation for questioning people and identifying dishonesty could make him especially valuable as a Traitor. The same skills that make him dangerous as a Faithful could be used to misdirect the group from within.
Episode 1 Ends Without Revealing the Third Traitor
After both men make their cases, James and Amol are placed into separate coffins. The imagery brings the episode back to Claudia’s theatrical entrance at the beginning, but this time the coffins represent a real turning point in the game. Maya and Richard reach their decision, yet the episode ends before revealing which man they have chosen.
The cliffhanger means one of them will return to the game with an entirely new role while the other will become the season’s first casualty. It also leaves Richard in an unusual position. The two Faithfuls most willing to question his confession are now directly in the Traitors’ hands, giving him a chance to repair some of the damage he caused almost immediately after receiving his cloak.
Whichever man survives the decision will also begin the next episode as one of the most important players in the game. If James or Amol becomes a Traitor, he will have to suddenly work alongside Richard despite already suspecting him. That makes the recruitment twist more than a dramatic cliffhanger, as it could reshape the entire power structure inside the castle before the first Round Table has even properly tested the group.
