School Spirits S2E5: Will Maddie ever get her body back, or is she stuck as a ghost forever?

Spoilers follow for School Spirits Season 2 through Episode 5, “Ghost Who’s Coming to Dinner.”

Maddie’s position differs from every other ghost at Split River High in one critical way: her body is still in the living world. Janet Hamilton (Jess Gabor), a chemistry student who died in a 1958 lab fire at the school, is occupying it. At the end of Episode 5, the show has confirmed a reversal is mechanically possible. What the episode also establishes is that two obstacles now make it harder: Janet has cut off the ghost team’s communication channel with the living side, and Mr. Martin (Josh Zuckerman) has escaped school grounds by possessing another person’s body.

Why Maddie’s situation is different from the other ghosts

Wally Clark (Milo Manheim), Rhonda Rosen (Sarah Yarkin), Charley (Nick Pugliese), and the rest of the ghost population at Split River High are dead. Their bodies are gone. Maddie Nears (Peyton List) is trapped in the school’s purgatory, but her physical body is present in the living world, occupied by Janet’s spirit. The show’s own setup treats this as what separates her case from the others.

Season 2 opens with Maddie having just recovered her memories of the night Janet took over. Her goal is not to solve a murder or find peace in the afterlife. She wants her body back.

How body possession works in the show

When emotional devastation thins the veil between the living world and the dead one, a spirit can be forced into or out of a living body. Janet Hamilton and her former chemistry teacher Mr. Martin spent decades after their deaths running experiments on the school’s ghost population to understand how this works. They found that each ghost has a “scar,” a hellish version of the location where that person died, and that these scars interconnect in a network beneath the school. Each scar can be opened by a “key,” an object tied to the ghost’s death.

Janet used this mechanism to take over Maddie’s body during the confrontation in the boiler room at the end of Season 1. Mr. Martin replicated it in Season 2 by taking over Mr. Anderson (Patrick Gilmore), a Split River High English teacher close to Maddie’s family.

Episode 5 confirms Martin’s departure from the school. The ghost team finds his watch abandoned near the school’s bus stop. In the show’s logic, the watch is Martin’s key. Its presence on the ground without him means he left the school the same way Janet did: inside a living person.

The dinner plan and where it breaks down

The episode’s central sequence is a dinner at Maddie’s home, arranged by Janet in Maddie’s body to reassure Maddie’s mother Sandra (Maria Dizzia), who is growing suspicious of her daughter’s behavior. The ghost team and the living side are coordinating in parallel: use the dinner to expose Janet and move toward convincing her to return to the school voluntarily for the body swap.

Janet holds the performance together until Nicole (Kiara Pichardo) mentions Eugene Berkstrom, a surviving friend of the real Janet Hamilton who is now living in a nursing home. The name triggers visible alarm. Janet then discovers a hidden open phone line Simon (Kristian Ventura) had been using to relay information to the ghost side, destroys it, and ends the evening by threatening Simon with a knife.

The plan collapses, but not without cost to Janet’s cover. Nicole later visits Eugene, who confirms that the chemistry lab fire that killed Janet was not a careless mistake on her part.

What Maddie finds inside Janet’s scar

Inside Janet’s scar, Maddie finds a portrait of what Janet’s life could have looked like before 1958. Entering through the boiler room, the convergence point where the possession happened, she sees the evidence the scar presents: trophies and clippings suggesting Janet was on course to graduate at the top of her class. Her father, a reverend, expected her to abandon any ambitions and marry directly out of high school.

The episode’s pivot comes when Maddie exits the scar and tells Wally that Janet would have lived a bigger life than her. Peyton List, who plays both Maddie and Janet in Season 2, told The Wrap that Maddie cannot bring herself to fully resent Janet after understanding that history, recognizing Janet as a fellow victim of circumstances rather than a simple villain. The episode frames the body swap as more than a mechanical problem: returning Janet to the school means sending her back to a purgatory she was partly manipulated into by Mr. Martin.

What Mr. Martin’s move changes

The episode closes with confirmation that Mr. Martin is operating inside Mr. Anderson’s body. When Mr. Anderson appears at the school pool and responds to Maddie and Wally with the awareness of someone who can see ghosts, the possession is clear. He then shows up at Sandra’s home under the cover of returning a book.

Martin’s escape proves the possession mechanic works beyond Janet’s specific circumstances. His proximity to Janet also sets up the episode’s cliffhanger: Janet is ambushed by a hooded figure outside while taking out the trash, with Martin the most probable candidate given his position and motive.

At the end of Episode 5, the path back to Maddie’s body exists and is grounded in an established mechanic. It requires Janet’s voluntary cooperation and neutralizing a ghost who is now loose in the living world, inside a stolen body, positioned to interfere. Both conditions remain unmet.
