School Spirits S2E5: How did Mr. Martin body snatch Mr. Anderson without anyone noticing?

Spoilers below for School Spirits Season 2, Episode 5, “Ghost Who’s Coming to Dinner,” and subsequent episodes.

Mr. Martin (Josh Zuckerman) body-snatched Mr. Anderson (Patrick Gilmore) because Anderson is an English teacher at Split River High with a close personal friendship with Sandra Nears, Maddie’s mother. That connection gave Martin access to exactly the people he needed to reach after leaving school grounds. The mechanics of the possession had already been laid out by the show: extreme emotional distress opens a human mind to a ghost’s influence, and the “Senior Togetherness Day” event in Episode 4 provided the kind of campus-wide emotional volatility Martin needed. The actual body snatch happens off-screen, between episodes, which is why no one witnessed it as it occurred.

How Ghost Possession Works in School Spirits

Extreme emotional distress is what makes a human mind accessible to a ghost, a rule the show sets up in Season 1 before Martin applies it in Season 2. Janet Hamilton (Jess Gabor) demonstrated the method when she entered Maddie’s body by targeting a moment of extreme emotional distress. Rhonda, explaining it to the group, puts it plainly: emotional pain makes people “accessible.”

Episode 5 also adds a more technical layer. When Yuri (Miles Elliot) analyzes what Martin left behind, he finds formulas concerning serotonin and dopamine. Yuri’s reading is that Martin spent his decades as a ghost studying how to open up access points using those neurotransmitters, a biochemical model for what Janet accomplished through raw desperation. The episode also establishes that Martin had an unusual ability among the school’s ghosts: where each spirit can only enter their own personal “scar” (a supernatural imprint tied to their death item), Martin could move freely through all of them, which gave him resources and information none of the others had accumulated.

When the school lights flickered and a low hum filled the building during the Togetherness Day event, the ghost group recognized the signals: those were the same phenomena that appeared when Janet entered Maddie’s body. No ambulance arrived, no body was found. The conclusion was that Martin had done the same thing and walked off campus inside someone else.

Why Mr. Anderson Was the Right Target

Anderson is an English teacher, not a counselor, and his close personal friendship with Sandra Nears, Maddie’s mother, is what made him the right target. That connection let Martin, inside Anderson’s body, appear at Sandra’s front door with no explanation required.

Martin moved on that advantage immediately. After the body snatch, he drove to the Nears home and brought Sandra a copy of Fahrenheit 451, telling her it was Maddie’s favorite book. It was actually Janet’s. The error was the kind that only someone who had never known Maddie well would make, but Sandra had no reason to suspect anything. From her perspective, Maddie’s caring English teacher was paying a thoughtful visit during a stressful time for the family.

Anderson’s position at the school also gave Martin legitimate reasons to remain on campus without drawing attention. Anderson’s teacher role gave Martin cover through multiple interactions with students, staff, and Maddie’s living friends, none of whom had cause to question it.

The Clues That Pointed to Martin’s Escape

Before Maddie and Wally confirm anything in Episode 5, the ghost group has their clearest piece of physical evidence: Rhonda finds a watch near the bus stop where Quinn had been sitting. In the show’s internal logic, a ghost’s personal item is their “key,” the object tethering them to their scar and to the school. The episode treats the abandoned watch as a deliberate act: Martin left it behind because he no longer needed it once he was inhabiting a living body.

His absence from the Afterlife Support Group meetings was the second signal. Martin had spent decades positioning himself as the group’s guide and gatekeeper, a role he used to conceal his real research. His sudden disappearance, coinciding with the light-and-hum event and the missing watch, made the body-snatch theory the only one that fit.

The Moment the Episode Confirms It

The confirmation arrives through Anderson himself. Maddie and Wally hear him shouting in the school hallway and find him visibly agitated. He can see them both. In the world the show has built, living people without a connection to the spirit realm cannot perceive ghosts. Anderson can, which means something from the possession has left him partially tethered to the ghost world, able to perceive it even as his body continues to function in the living one.

Anderson rushes toward Maddie, relieved to find her. The episode closes with his situation confirmed and a second threat already in motion: outside the Nears house, someone throws a bag over Janet’s head and drags her away, almost certainly Martin using Anderson’s body to physically seize the person he came looking for in the first place.

What the Choice of Anderson Reveals

Martin did not grab the nearest emotionally distressed individual during the Togetherness Day event. He selected someone whose social position gave him a direct line into the lives of the people he wanted to control, at a moment when Sandra’s concern for her daughter was already at its highest. That is the detail the show uses to reframe him as something other than an opportunist: Martin had been watching and planning long before the possession itself.

The Season 2 finale eventually reverses the situation. The group lures Martin into the school auditorium, uses guilt to destabilize him emotionally, and Simon physically pushes him back into Anderson, expelling him from the body. Anderson then walks to the police station under his own power. Season 3 premiered on Paramount+ on January 28, 2026.
