S.W.A.T. Exiles Season 1 Episode 1 Recap: Hondo Builds a New Team in “Clean Entry”

“S.W.A.T. Exiles” does not give Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson the comfortable homecoming viewers might expect. The new series finds the veteran S.W.A.T. leader two years removed from the job, carrying the consequences of a mission that changed his career and his personal life. Season 1 Episode 1, titled “Clean Entry,” puts Hondo back in uniform, but the squad waiting for him bears little resemblance to the trusted team he once commanded.

Instead, Hondo is handed five talented officers who have all been overlooked, rejected or viewed as difficult for different reasons. What initially looks like a straightforward second chance gradually becomes something more suspicious, particularly when Hondo begins to question why these exact recruits were placed together. By the end of the premiere, 44 Squad has survived its first genuine test, but Hondo has also realized that somebody may be trying to make sure his comeback fails.

Why Did Hondo Leave S.W.A.T.?

The episode opens on a Hondo who has clearly lost much of the life he once knew. Flashbacks take him back to an earlier S.W.A.T. mission involving a young operator named Nico Reyes, who does not make it home. The experience continues to follow Hondo, who remembers desperately trying to help Nico and carries considerable guilt over what happened.

Footage connected to the operation eventually became public, creating a political problem for the department. Hondo refused to simply accept the official version of events, and the fallout effectively erased him from S.W.A.T. Rather than being celebrated for his years of service, he was pushed aside while the institution moved forward without him.

Two years later, Hondo is working private security, protecting wealthy clients rather than doing the work that once gave him purpose. His personal life has changed too. He has lost his mother and is divorced from Nichelle, leaving his daughter as one of the few parts of his old life that continues to anchor him.

Robert Hicks eventually tracks Hondo down with an unexpected proposal. S.W.A.T. itself is in trouble, and Hicks wants Hondo to return and build a completely new unit from the ground up.

Hondo Takes Charge of 44 Squad

Hondo arrives to discover that the supposed reform unit is operating out of an unimpressive section of an old administrative building. His section commander, Clint Myers, tries to sell the arrangement positively, while Deputy Chief Ramon Carrero publicly presents Hondo’s return as evidence that the department is changing.

The bigger surprise comes when Hondo finally meets 44 Squad. Samantha “Sammy” Bishop is confident, outspoken and constantly thinking about her online audience. Ethan Cole is an exceptionally analytical tactical specialist whose comfort with patterns and technology far exceeds his comfort with ordinary social interaction.

Cassidy Reed is disciplined and determined to prove she belongs despite having already been underestimated elsewhere. Jude Callan is blunt, unpredictable and not particularly interested in pretending he likes everybody around him. Malik Anderson, a former Marine, initially appears to be the recruit most committed to Hondo because he respects the stand Hondo took after his previous mission.

Their differences become obvious before Hondo even properly introduces himself. Sammy is livestreaming inside the locker room, Ethan is working on drone calculations, and Jude immediately clashes with Sammy over boundaries. Hondo quickly realizes that putting five capable people in the same room is very different from having a functioning team.

Hondo Pushes His New Recruits

Hondo has little interest in easing everyone into the assignment. Almost immediately, he orders the recruits through a demanding physical qualification and then gives them another exercise that can only be completed if they work together.

Malik finishes first, followed by Cassidy, Sammy and Jude. Ethan appears to finish last, although Hondo discovers that he has actually been standing nearby for several minutes after choosing a more efficient route through the course.

The exercise tells Hondo plenty about their individual abilities, but he is less impressed by their ability to operate collectively. They have all reached S.W.A.T. through different paths and have different ideas about what good leadership looks like. Hondo, meanwhile, is still trying to command them as though he were leading the experienced 20 Squad he left behind. That problem becomes much clearer during a simulated hostage operation.

Malik Walks Away From Hondo

Hondo deliberately makes the training scenario more difficult than the recruits expect. Information is withheld, equipment does not work as planned, and the squad is forced to react when their original entry strategy falls apart.

The result is chaotic. Ethan and Cassidy lose coordination, Sammy moves when she should hold, and communication across the squad breaks down. Malik is the only recruit Hondo believes consistently maintained his position.

Hondo tears into the team afterward, but Malik challenges him in return. He realizes that Hondo intentionally manipulated the exercise and argues that creating artificial failures is not the same thing as teaching people how to trust one another.

For Hondo, withholding information was a way to test how the squad responded when circumstances changed. Malik sees it differently. He tells Hondo that he joined the unit to serve, not to carry the weight of Hondo’s unresolved past, and then walks away.

It is one of the premiere’s most important moments because Malik is not entirely wrong. Hondo is demanding trust from his recruits while refusing to offer much of himself in return.

Deacon Helps Hondo See the Problem

After the disastrous training session, Hondo visits his former teammate David “Deacon” Kay. Their conversation gives the premiere a direct connection to the original “S.W.A.T.” while also forcing Hondo to look at his own behavior.

Hondo complains that his recruits do not listen and cannot trust one another. Deacon reminds him that Hondo himself was once the difficult young officer in the room, and that their partnership only worked because Deacon eventually learned that leadership required meeting him halfway.

The point stays with Hondo. He has spent much of the episode viewing the new recruits as a problem he needs to fix, when part of the problem is that he is trying to reproduce the leadership style that worked with a completely different team.

Before he can fully deal with that realization, Ethan discovers something that turns their training exercise into a real assignment.

Ethan Finds Carlos Vaminez

Ethan has independently studied footage connected to several Los Emperados members who recently entered Los Angeles. His analysis identifies the man they appear to be pursuing as Carlos Vaminez, a former member of the organization who disappeared years earlier.

Ethan predicts where Carlos will appear next by studying his routine. Hondo brings Ethan and Cassidy along to intercept him, but the operation initially becomes messy when Carlos tries to escape. Cassidy eventually stops him, giving the squad its first meaningful lead.

Back at the station, Sammy and Jude convince Hondo to let them speak with Carlos. Hondo expects Carlos to remain silent, but Sammy and Jude approach him differently.

Rather than treating him simply as a suspect, they work out what he is frightened of losing. Carlos finally admits that he abandoned his former life years ago after refusing an order he could not accept. He eventually built a new life with his wife and six-year-old daughter, Celine. Now his past has found him again.

Celine Becomes the Team’s First Real Test

Carlos is less worried about himself than he is about his family. He believes the people looking for him will use his wife and daughter to force him into the open.

That fear soon becomes reality when Celine is taken. Ethan begins piecing together traffic information, environmental sensors and audio data, eventually identifying an abandoned theater as the likely location where she is being held.

Command initially hesitates because Ethan cannot provide conventional visual confirmation. Hondo argues that the evidence, combined with his experience dealing with organizations that use similar tactics, is enough to act.

Permission finally comes through, but it leaves Hondo with another uncomfortable realization. His new unit has been given a difficult operation on limited information and without the kind of support he expected. Suddenly, the strange choices surrounding 44 Squad no longer look accidental.

Hondo Realizes the Exiles Were Chosen to Fail

Before the team leaves, Hondo finally speaks to his recruits differently. Instead of pretending he has everything under control, he admits what he has begun to suspect.

Every member of the squad has something in his or her personnel file that made other commanders hesitate. Hondo has his own damaged reputation as well. Putting all of them together now seems less like an ambitious reform project and more like an easy way for the department to create a disposable unit.

If 44 Squad succeeds, the department benefits. If it fails, officials can blame a disgraced commander and five officers who were already considered risky choices.

Hondo also admits that he has contributed to the problem by keeping his recruits at a distance. Malik’s earlier criticism finally reaches him.

Rather than ordering the team to follow him, Hondo asks them to decide what the badge means for themselves. One by one, they choose to stay. Malik also returns.

Does 44 Squad Rescue Celine?

The abandoned theater operation becomes the first moment when the recruits begin functioning like an actual S.W.A.T. team. Ethan uses a drone to map the building and locate Celine, while Hondo assigns the others according to their strengths.

Carlos also arrives, exactly as his former associates expected, forcing the team to move quickly. Cassidy, Sammy, Jude, Malik and Ethan work alongside Hondo as the operation spreads through different levels of the building.

The mission is far from perfect, but that is precisely the point of “Clean Entry.” The recruits stop competing long enough to cover one another, adapt when the plan changes and keep their attention on getting Celine out safely. They succeed.

Afterward, Hondo reflects on something he has spent the episode resisting. His younger recruits communicate differently, deal with pressure differently and sometimes challenge authority in ways he would never have accepted from his old squad. That does not necessarily make them weaker operators. They are not yet the kind of team Hondo understands, but they have shown him that they might eventually become one.

S.W.A.T. Exiles Episode 1 Ending Explained

The rescue does not solve Hondo’s larger problem. He contacts Hicks and confronts him about the strange circumstances surrounding 44 Squad.

Hondo explains that Hicks’ name appeared throughout the personnel paperwork, but the composition of the team does not feel like something Hicks would have deliberately created. Hicks then reveals that he was pushed aside almost immediately after Hondo returned. That changes everything.

Hondo concludes that personnel records may have been manipulated and that somebody with considerable influence has been arranging events behind the scenes. He asks Hicks to use his remaining contacts to find out who is responsible.

Hondo now understands that his return to S.W.A.T. may never have been intended as a real second chance. Somebody wanted him back inside the department for another reason, and 44 Squad appears to be part of that plan.

Is Malik Working Against Hondo?

The premiere saves its biggest complication for its final moments. Malik, the recruit who initially seemed to admire Hondo more than anyone else, is revealed to have another connection outside the squad.

He meets with an unidentified person after the operation and is reminded that he was supposed to report in. The exchange makes it clear that Malik has made some kind of prior commitment involving Hondo, and his goal is not simply to help 44 Squad succeed.

Malik states that Hondo does not deserve his badge or his command and intends to make sure everyone eventually sees him that way.

That does not yet explain who recruited Malik, why he has such a personal view of Hondo, or whether he knows about the wider effort to undermine the unit. It does, however, completely change the meaning of his confrontation with Hondo earlier in the episode.

Malik’s criticism may have been sincere, but he entered 44 Squad with an agenda Hondo knows nothing about.

“Clean Entry” therefore ends with two mysteries moving toward each other. Hondo knows somebody powerful deliberately placed him and the recruits in a vulnerable position, while the audience learns that at least one member of his new team is already reporting elsewhere. Hondo may have finally started turning the Exiles into a squad, but trusting them could become much harder than training them.
