Ben Merrick barely appears in the opening mystery of Reacher Season 4, yet by the time Episode 3 ends, his absence may be one of its most alarming loose ends. Anna Merrick’s brother Jacob initially treats Ben’s silence as unusual but not necessarily catastrophic. College students miss calls, football players disappear into their own lives, and Anna’s death gives the family more immediate problems. Then Ben misses practice. His frat brothers reveal that he left with a woman, and when Reacher tracks her down, she has been tortured and murdered. Ben is still missing at the end of Episode 3, and the show has not confirmed whether he is alive. What it does establish is that his disappearance is almost certainly connected to the people hunting Anna’s flash drive rather than an ordinary college absence.
The distinction matters because Ben may be more than another person caught in Anna’s fallout. Whoever reached him understood enough about his private life to trace the woman he left with, and whoever killed her was looking for something badly enough to use prolonged violence. That turns Ben from a worried relative’s side mystery into potential leverage inside the season’s larger conspiracy.
Spoiler Alert
When Does Everyone Realize Ben Is Actually Missing?
The alarm becomes serious when Ben’s football coach calls Anna’s apartment and says he never showed up for practice. Jacob had already been unable to reach his nephew after Anna’s death, but there was still room to believe Ben simply had not checked his phone. While Jacob and Detective Tamara Green search Anna’s ransacked apartment, the coach’s call eliminates that comforting possibility. Ben has now missed an obligation other people expected him to attend, and no one close to him knows where he went.
That development arrives while Anna’s home is already screaming that something went wrong before her subway death. There is old mail, unfinished food, missing keys and evidence that someone has been staying inside the apartment. Tamara and Jacob are even attacked there. Ben disappearing in the middle of that mess makes it difficult to believe the timing is accidental.
The series wisely does not immediately declare him kidnapped. Reacher needs evidence, and at this stage there is none showing Ben being taken by force. The next lead, however, makes voluntary disappearance much harder to accept.
Who Was the Woman Ben Left the Frat House With?
Ben was last known to have left his fraternity house with a woman whose online work helps Reacher’s group identify her. One of Ben’s fraternity brothers, Colin, recognizes her as an OnlyFans creator because he follows her account. He is initially embarrassed to explain how he knows her, forcing Reacher to drag the useful information out of a conversation otherwise full of frat-house nonsense.
That lead gives the investigation its first concrete path from Ben’s last known location. With help from Detective Dockery, Reacher, Jacob and Tamara trace the woman to her apartment. They are not walking into a romantic misunderstanding or discovering that Ben quietly spent the night somewhere else. They find a murder scene.
It is the moment when Jacob’s fear becomes justified. Ben did not merely choose the wrong person to leave a party with. Somebody reached the woman after their encounter, and the condition of her body suggests information was the objective.

Why Is Her Murder Such a Bad Sign for Ben?
The woman was tortured with unusual precision before being killed, which strongly suggests that whoever attacked her wanted answers about Ben. Reacher examines the injuries and sees similarities to the knife-based methods used by assassins who previously came after him and Lila. He even sends Tamara back to retrieve one of those attackers’ weapons so they can compare it with what happened at the apartment.
That does not yet prove the same group committed both attacks. Season 4 has already introduced multiple factions hunting the flash drive, including apparent CIA operatives and another heavily armed unit that later kills those agents at Russell Plum’s building. But the woman’s death establishes a more important point: someone is moving through the same network of people Reacher is investigating and using violence to find what they need.
If Ben left with her shortly before she was tortured, there are only a few plausible directions. She may have known where Ben went next, she may have been deliberately used to reach him, or whoever was hunting Ben could have questioned her after discovering the connection. Episodes 1–3 do not tell us which.
Was Ben Taken Because of Anna Merrick?
Anna is the strongest known reason anyone would target Ben, although the show has not confirmed the exact motive. By Episode 3, Anna is clearly more important than the low-level Pentagon employee she appeared to be. She possessed two different work badges, held Level 8 security clearance and was connected to a flash drive so sensitive that intelligence officers and unidentified gunmen are willing to kill over it.
Ben is her son. That alone makes him valuable to anyone searching for information Anna hid before her death.
He could be a hostage used to force Anna’s associates to cooperate. Someone may believe Anna gave him the drive. He may know something about his mother’s real work without realizing its importance. Or the people behind the conspiracy could simply be eliminating everyone close enough to Anna to become a loose end.
What we cannot responsibly say after Episode 3 is that Ben definitely possesses the flash drive or understands the conspiracy. The series has supplied no such confirmation yet.
Did Anna Know Her Son Was in Danger?
There is no confirmed evidence that Anna knew what had happened to Ben before she died, but her behavior suggests she believed danger was already closing in around her. On the subway, Anna is terrified, dressed strangely for the weather and apparently convinced there is no safe way out of her situation. The federal response after her death and the relentless search for the missing drive show that her fear was not imaginary.
The chronology makes Ben especially troubling. His disappearance becomes apparent only after Anna is dead, meaning viewers cannot yet tell whether he was already missing when she boarded the subway or whether he was targeted immediately afterward. If he vanished first, Anna’s terror could partly involve fear for her son. If he was taken later, then whoever is behind the conspiracy moved quickly to contain the people closest to her.
The show has not provided enough timing detail to decide between those possibilities. That uncertainty is worth preserving because it affects whether Anna’s final decisions were driven solely by the flash drive or by a threat we still do not understand.
Is Ben Merrick Still Alive?
Episodes 1–3 deliberately leave Ben’s fate unknown. No body has been found, no captor has contacted Jacob, and nobody has produced proof that Ben is dead. At the same time, the murder of the last woman known to have been with him makes optimism difficult.
From a storytelling standpoint, the absence of a body matters, but that is not evidence of survival. Reacher has given viewers a missing-person mystery rather than a confirmed death, and the safest conclusion is exactly that: Ben is missing and believed to be in serious danger.
Jacob’s behavior reflects that uncertainty. He is already grieving Anna while trying not to imagine the worst about her son, and the case keeps stripping away reasons for reassurance. Russell Plum even recognizes how recklessly Jacob is beginning to act as the investigation becomes personal. The longer Ben remains unaccounted for, the harder it becomes for Jacob to approach Anna’s secrets as simply another police problem.
Why Ben May Be More Important Than the Flash Drive
Ben’s disappearance may eventually reveal what Anna was trying to protect, because the people hunting the drive appear willing to follow her connections rather than merely search her belongings. Anna’s apartment has been compromised. Her car has been searched. Her former movements are being reconstructed. A woman connected to Ben has been tortured and killed. That pattern suggests the conspiracy is not waiting for the flash drive to surface on its own.
That is why Ben’s story feels increasingly dangerous even though Episodes 1–3 spend more screen time on Lila, Sampson and Cahill. Anna’s hidden Level 8 clearance proves she had a professional life her family did not understand. Ben may be the person closest to that hidden life without knowing it.
By the end of “One Small Step,” Reacher has learned enough to understand that Anna’s death was not an isolated tragedy. Cahill is dead, two armed factions are hunting the same information, Lila has admitted lying, and Ben remains somewhere beyond everyone’s reach. The season can delay showing him, but it cannot make his disappearance ordinary again. Whatever happened after he walked out of that frat house is now tied to the same secret Anna believed was worth dying to protect.
