Anyone reaching the end of Outer Banks Season 5 hoping for another adventure with the Pogues is going to run into a firm answer: there will not be an Outer Banks Season 6. Netflix has repeatedly described Season 5 as the fifth and final season, and all 10 episodes are now available as the conclusion of the original series. This was not presented as a surprise cancellation after Season 5 was produced. Creators Josh Pate, Jonas Pate and Shannon Burke have said the mystery was conceived as a five-season journey, meaning the current ending is broadly where they had planned to bring the Pogues’ story.
The encouraging part for fans is that Outer Banks may not disappear completely. A prequel commonly referred to as Kildare is now being developed around the world that existed before John B, Sarah, Kiara, Pope and the rest of the original group.
Why Isn’t Outer Banks Season 6 Happening?
Season 6 is not happening because Season 5 was deliberately designed as the final chapter of the original Outer Banks story. When Netflix announced the last season, the creators explained that their initial idea had grown into a mystery they imagined would stretch across five seasons of friendship, treasure hunting and adventure. They also said they had known the final scene of the series from early in the creative process. That makes Season 5 different from a show that reaches a cliffhanger and is then unexpectedly denied another season.
Netflix is now equally clear in its own material. Tudum calls Season 5 the “fifth and final season” and tells viewers to watch the Pogues’ last ride, while Netflix’s media center describes the story as the group’s attempt to bring their adventure home “one final time.” There has been no announcement reversing that decision or suggesting that a sixth season is under consideration.

Was Outer Banks Cancelled by Netflix?
Not in the usual sense of an abrupt cancellation. Netflix renewed Outer Banks for Season 5 in November 2024 while simultaneously announcing that it would be the show’s final season, giving the writers a full final chapter rather than ending the series without warning. The creators’ own statement said they hoped to bring the Pogues home in the way they had imagined and planned years earlier.
That distinction matters because “cancelled” can imply that the story was cut short for ratings, budget or other business reasons. Neither Netflix nor the creators have characterized the ending that way. Instead, the public explanation has consistently been that five seasons represented the complete journey they wanted to tell. Season 5 therefore functions as a series finale rather than an unfinished season waiting for renewal.

Could Netflix Change Its Mind and Make Season 6 Later?
There is currently no evidence that Netflix plans to revive Outer Banks for a sixth season. Television franchises can always return years later through revivals, reunion specials or sequel projects, so it would be impossible to say the original cast can never appear together again. But as of now, no Season 6 has been announced, developed or teased by Netflix. The safest answer for viewers is that the main series is finished.
That also means supposed Season 6 release dates, casting lists or production schedules appearing online should be treated cautiously unless they come from Netflix or the show’s creators. There is no legitimate release window to report because a sixth season has not been ordered. Season 5 is the end of the currently confirmed John B-era series.
What Is Kildare, the Outer Banks Prequel?
Kildare is a reported prequel project set roughly 20 years before the events of Outer Banks. Deadline reports that creators Josh Pate, Jonas Pate and Shannon Burke are developing the concept at Netflix, with the story intended to explore how Kildare’s deep divide between the wealthy Kooks and working-class Pogues developed. Entertainment Weekly has likewise reported that the creators are working on the project.
The earlier setting means Kildare would not simply be Outer Banks Season 6 with a different title. Its central characters would come from another generation, and the original Pogues would not be teenagers in that timeline. The attraction is instead the history of the fictional island itself: how Figure 8 and the Cut became so divided, how the Kook-Pogue rivalry took shape and what Kildare looked like before the treasure hunts that eventually consumed John B and his friends.
When Will the Outer Banks Prequel Be Released?
There is no confirmed Kildare release date yet. The project is still being described as in development, and Netflix has not announced a premiere date or a complete cast. Reports indicate that the creators are working on the script, which means the project is considerably earlier in the production cycle than a series that already has cameras rolling.
Earlier comments from Jonas Pate also suggested that the prequel would introduce a new group of younger actors and focus on the origins of the social groups fans already know from Outer Banks. Until Netflix formally announces production details, however, any specific release year would be speculation.

Is Outer Banks Really Over After Season 5?
The original series is over, but the wider fictional world may continue. Season 5 completes the five-season adventure the creators had planned for the Pogues, so viewers should not expect Netflix to announce Outer Banks Season 6 as the next chapter. What comes next, if Kildare moves forward, will be a different story set in the same world rather than a direct continuation numbered as Season 6.
That may ultimately be the cleaner way to extend the franchise. John B and his friends have been given an ending instead of being sent into another treasure hunt simply because the show remains popular. Kildare can revisit the Kooks, Pogues and island mythology without undoing that finale. For now, Season 5 is the end of Outer Banks, while the possibility of another trip to Kildare remains very much alive.
