The final Outer Banks Season 5 trailer turns what once looked like a desperate fan theory into an actual question the Pogues are asking: Can the Blue Crown bring JJ back from the dead? According to the legend surrounding the treasure, possibly. But there is an important distinction. The series has never demonstrated that the Crown can actually resurrect someone, and Netflix’s early look at Season 5 still describes JJ as dead. What is confirmed is that Kiara and the others now know about the Crown’s supposed ability to restore the dead, giving their pursuit of Chandler Groff a purpose that goes far beyond revenge.
Spoiler Alert
Can the Blue Crown Actually Bring JJ Back?
The Blue Crown was already surrounded by extraordinary claims before JJ died. Season 4 established it as one of the ancient world’s most sought-after artifacts, supposedly capable of granting wishes and making the person who wears it invincible. None of those powers had been conclusively demonstrated by the end of the season.
Season 5 adds a much more specific piece of mythology.
In the final trailer, Kiara says that the legend claims the Crown can bring back the dead. Netflix itself has leaned directly into the possibility, asking whether JJ could return or whether the idea is simply coming from the Pogues’ grief. That makes resurrection part of the final season’s story rather than something created entirely by fans.
The unanswered part is whether the legend is true.
Outer Banks has deliberately waited to show what happens when someone actually attempts to use the Crown’s supposed power. Until Season 5 provides that answer, bringing JJ back remains a possibility, not a confirmed outcome.
Why Does JJ’s Death Make the Crown So Important?
The cruelest part of the Season 4 finale is that JJ actually finds the Blue Crown.
After reaching the treasure in Morocco, he has almost no time to enjoy the victory. Groff takes Kiara hostage, forcing JJ to hand over the Crown in exchange for her safety. Groff then murders his own son anyway and escapes with the treasure. The Pogues bury JJ in Morocco and decide to go after Groff.
That sequence now looks even more important because the writers were already thinking about the Crown’s wish mythology while creating JJ’s final scenes.
Co-showrunner Shannon Burke explained after Season 4 that the writers had planted the idea of a wish into the story and intended to use it later. He also said the lore of the Blue Crown would carry the show through to its ending.
In other words, the Crown was never simply another expensive treasure for the Pogues to recover.
It may be the device that connects JJ’s death to the final chapter.

Are the Pogues Really Trying to Resurrect JJ?
The trailer strongly suggests they will at least consider it, but the opening of Season 5 adds some useful context.
Netflix has released the first eight minutes of Episode 1 early. At that point, the Pogues’ immediate goal is to intercept Groff before he sells the Blue Crown to a buyer in Portugal. They want the treasure back, but they are also consumed by the need to avenge JJ. Groff still has the Crown, and the crew plans to reach Lisbon before the deal can happen.
That means resurrection does not appear to be their only motivation from the first minute. Grief comes first.
Kiara wants Groff held responsible. John B is trying to get everyone home alive. Pope is dealing with the consequences of killing Lightner. Sarah is pregnant. The entire group has been altered by what happened in Morocco. The Crown gives them a possible way to undo the one loss they cannot otherwise fix.
That is why the trailer’s resurrection tease works so well. It is not simply another treasure hunt. For once, the Pogues may be chasing an object because they believe it can return a person rather than make them rich.
Is JJ Definitely Dead Going Into Season 5?
Yes. At the beginning of Season 5, JJ is dead.
Netflix’s official preview states that directly, and the Season 4 finale shows him dying after Groff stabs him. The Pogues then bury him in Morocco.
There has nevertheless been enormous speculation about whether Rudy Pankow could secretly return.
The available evidence currently leans against a normal return. Pankow has spoken about leaving the series, and Netflix’s announced returning Season 5 regulars include Chase Stokes, Madelyn Cline, Madison Bailey, Jonathan Daviss, Carlacia Grant, Drew Starkey, Austin North and Fiona Palomo, but not Pankow.
Earlier comments from the show’s creative team left open the possibility of some form of appearance, particularly a flashback, but nothing has been officially confirmed.
That makes an important distinction for viewers searching whether JJ is “back.”
The Crown may give the Pogues hope of bringing JJ back, but Netflix has not confirmed that Rudy Pankow returns as a resurrected JJ.

Could the Blue Crown’s Wish Mean Something Else?
Very possibly. A literal resurrection is the most obvious interpretation because Season 5 explicitly introduces the claim that the Crown can restore the dead. But Outer Banks could also use that promise as an emotional trap.
The Pogues might retrieve the Crown, attempt to use it and discover that the legend is false. They could also learn that its power has conditions, limitations or an entirely different meaning.
There is another possibility. Their eventual “wish” may not be JJ himself.
The Season 5 story is repeatedly framed around the Pogues trying to reclaim the life they lost. They are broke, homeless, grieving and scattered emotionally. Co-showrunner Jonas Pate has said their journey is ultimately about finding peace after JJ’s death rather than simply collecting another treasure.
The Crown could therefore force them to choose between reversing the past and creating the future JJ wanted for them.
That would fit his final act. JJ gives up the greatest treasure they have ever found because Kiara’s life means more to him.
Will JJ Come Back in Outer Banks Season 5?
For now, the most accurate answer is: the Pogues appear likely to try, but JJ’s resurrection is not confirmed.
Season 5 deliberately makes the possibility believable. The Blue Crown was established as a wish-granting artifact, the writers planted its wish mythology before JJ’s death, and the new trailer specifically says it may be capable of returning the dead.
At the same time, everything Netflix has released before the premiere continues to treat JJ’s death as real and central to the final season. The creators have described that loss as the emotional foundation of the story rather than a temporary cliffhanger.
That tension is probably intentional.
The final Outer Banks treasure may tempt the Pogues with something they have never been able to buy, steal or discover before: a second chance with their best friend.
Whether the Crown can actually give them one is the mystery Season 5 still has to answer.
