MasterChef: Global Gauntlet Season 16 Episode 15 moved the final six contestants out of the familiar MasterChef kitchen and into one of the hardest challenges of the season. For the “Restaurant Takeover,” the home cooks had to run dinner service at Cluny Bistro & Boulangerie in Toronto, where mistakes could affect an entire dining room rather than just one plate for the judges.

Gordon Ramsay, Tiffany Derry, and Joe Bastianich divided the Top 6 into two teams and handed them a French-inspired restaurant menu. By the end of the night, one team had managed to recover from its problems, while the other became so overwhelmed that Gordon had to step onto the line himself.

Jake and Basia take charge of the two teams

The Blue Team consisted of Jake, Heidi, and Julia, with Jake serving as captain. Basia led the Red Team alongside Dave and Peter, giving both captains an opportunity to prove that they could manage more than their own individual dishes.

Winning carried an additional reward because the captain of the stronger team would receive the final major advantage of the season in the next challenge. With only six contestants remaining, that advantage could have a major impact on who eventually reaches the finale.

The cooks were responsible for a four-dish menu featuring two appetizers and two entrees. The starters included sauteed prawns with curried parsnip puree and smoked bacon lardon salad, along with pan-seared branzino served with scallops, mussels, and bouillabaisse.

For the main courses, the teams had to prepare pan-seared salmon with soubise creamed onion puree, sauteed escarole, and sauce vierge, as well as steak frites with bordelaise sauce, watercress salad, and parmesan fries. Gordon demonstrated all four dishes before the restaurant opened, but once service began, the contestants had to reproduce them while dealing with real orders and restaurant timing.

The Blue Team starts stronger under Jake

Jake’s Blue Team settled into service more comfortably, although it was hardly a flawless night. Heidi quickly admitted that the environment was challenging for her because her previous kitchen experience had mainly involved cooking aboard a private yacht rather than working inside a fast-moving restaurant brigade.

The team nevertheless kept its service moving, largely because Jake continued communicating from the captain’s position. Instead of becoming distracted whenever one station struggled, he kept pushing Heidi and Julia toward the next tickets and maintaining some order in the kitchen.

Julia eventually ran into serious trouble once the entrees began going out. She sent two undercooked portions of salmon to Gordon, who temporarily removed her from the station and forced her to reset before returning to the kitchen.

The moment clearly frustrated Julia, especially this late in the competition, but the Blue Team did not completely fall apart because of it. Jake was able to keep the other components moving until Julia recovered and resumed cooking.

Basia’s Red Team struggles almost immediately

Things were much more difficult for Basia, Peter, and Dave from the beginning of dinner service. Basia had never worked in a restaurant before, and her lack of experience with timing became apparent when she started dressing salads well before the orders were ready to leave the kitchen.

Gordon quickly stopped her and demanded that she focus on what the team actually needed at that moment. The mistake was relatively small on its own, but it became an early sign that the Red Team was having trouble coordinating its stations.

Peter and Dave soon added further problems at the pass. Undercooked prawns and scallops were sent forward and rejected by Gordon, while Dave struggled with correctly tracking orders and also ran into issues with seasoning.

Instead of improving as service continued, the team’s communication became increasingly confused. Gordon eventually pulled Basia, Peter, and Dave away from their stations and gave them a direct warning that they needed to reorganize themselves before the entire service collapsed.

Dave’s raw salmon becomes a turning point

The Red Team’s problems became even more serious once the main courses started. Peter overcooked a steak, while Dave sent up salmon that was still raw and immediately had the dish rejected by Gordon.

At the Top 6 stage, mistakes involving basic doneness can be especially damaging because the judges expect the remaining contestants to have greater control over their cooking. Dave’s salmon therefore became much more than another plate sent back during a difficult service.

Meanwhile, the Blue Team was beginning to finish its remaining orders. Jake, Heidi, and Julia had made mistakes of their own, but they had managed to correct them quickly enough to prevent the kitchen from completely losing control.

The Red Team never reached that same level of recovery and continued falling further behind. Eventually, Gordon stepped onto their station and cooked salmon himself so that the remaining customers would not have to continue waiting for their meals.

Blue Team wins the Restaurant Takeover

After service ended, Gordon, Tiffany, and Joe considered both the quality of the food and how effectively the two teams had operated throughout the night. Their decision went to the Blue Team, sending Jake, Heidi, and Julia safely into the Top 5.

The victory was especially important for Jake because he had been the team’s captain. In addition to securing his own place in the next round, he earned the season’s final advantage heading into the upcoming challenge.

Jake’s leadership was one of the biggest differences between the two teams during Restaurant Takeover. The Blue kitchen faced genuine problems, particularly with Julia’s salmon, but Jake kept the team communicating and moving forward instead of allowing those errors to take over the entire service.

Why was Dave eliminated from MasterChef Season 16?

The Red Team’s loss left Basia, Peter, and Dave facing the possibility of elimination. Although all three had struggled at different points during service, the judges ultimately decided that Dave’s performance was the weakest of the night.

His raw salmon during the entree portion was particularly costly after the team had already experienced several problems earlier in service. Dave had also struggled with keeping track of orders and maintaining consistency while the Red Team fell increasingly behind.

Dave was therefore eliminated from MasterChef: Global Gauntlet Season 16 Episode 15, ending his run just before the Top 5. He left the competition disappointed by his final service but proud of everything he had accomplished during the season.

With Dave gone, Jake, Heidi, Julia, Basia, and Peter officially make up the final five contestants. The competition has now reached the point where a single poorly executed dish or difficult challenge can end an otherwise strong season.

What happens next in MasterChef Season 16?

The Top 5 will next face another familiar but intimidating MasterChef challenge built around keeping pace with the judges. “Keeping Up With Gordon” usually requires contestants to follow Gordon Ramsay as he cooks at high speed without receiving the comfort of a normal step-by-step demonstration.

This time, the challenge appears to become even harder because the contestants will also have to keep up with Tiffany Derry. With places in the finale getting closer, Jake’s advantage from winning Restaurant Takeover could prove especially valuable.

Episode 15 showed how little room for recovery remains this late in the competition. The Blue Team survived its mistakes because it regained control quickly, while the Red Team continued slipping until Gordon had to intervene, and that difference ultimately brought Dave’s MasterChef journey to an end.
