How Did Julia Time Travel If She Doesn’t Have the Gift? Did Baby William Take Her Through the Stones?

Outlander: Blood of My Blood has spent much of its story treating Henry and Julia Beauchamp as a pair of accidental time travelers. Season 2 Episode 2, “The Veil of Time,” suddenly complicates that assumption. When Julia privately asks Maisri whether she can use Craigh na Dun again, the seer gives her an unexpectedly definite answer: the gift to pass through time is not within her. That creates an obvious problem because Julia has already traveled once, crossing from the 20th century into 1714 before Henry followed her.

If Maisri is correct, something else must have allowed Julia to make that first journey. The most compelling possibility is William, who was still unborn when Julia originally passed through the stones.

Julia Was Pregnant When She First Crossed

Blood of My Blood established in its first season that Julia was already expecting her second child when she and Henry survived their accident in Scotland and encountered Craigh na Dun. Julia reached the stones first and disappeared into the past, while Henry followed separately after realizing what had happened.

That sequence is important because it rules out the simplest explanation for Julia’s journey. Henry was not holding her hand or physically guiding her through the stones when she vanished. Julia crossed before him, but she was not technically alone because William was already inside her.

Season 2 Episode 2 makes that detail potentially crucial. Maisri tells Julia that only certain people possess the gift associated with Craigh na Dun and directly says Julia is not one of them. Even during Samhain, when the barrier between worlds is believed to be at its thinnest, Maisri insists Julia would not be able to cross.

Could William Have the Time Travel Gift?

The strongest theory is that William inherited the ability from Henry and effectively carried Julia through the stones while she was pregnant. Blood of My Blood has not confirmed this explanation, so it should still be treated as a theory rather than an established time travel rule.

However, it fits what the wider Outlander mythology has established about the ability running through family lines. Claire can travel, Brianna inherits the gift, Roger has it through his own ancestry, and their children also demonstrate unusual abilities connected to time travel. Henry clearly possesses the gift as well because he has successfully traveled through Craigh na Dun more than once.

William is Henry’s biological son, making it reasonable to wonder whether he inherited the same ability before he was even born. TVLine raised a similar possibility following Episode 2, suggesting William may have been the reason Julia could make her original journey while carrying him.

Why Henry Probably Didn’t Take Julia Through

Before Maisri’s revelation, it was easy to assume Henry and Julia simply shared the same time travel ability. The sequence of events in Season 1 now matters much more because Julia disappears first and Henry only travels after approaching the stones while searching for her.

If Maisri’s reading is accurate, Henry could not have directly taken Julia with him because they did not travel together. William, on the other hand, was physically connected to Julia throughout her entire first journey.

That makes the baby the most obvious difference between Julia’s successful trip into the past and the failed attempt to return at the end of Season 1. It also raises the possibility that pregnancy created a unique situation that Julia cannot recreate simply by holding William after his birth.

Why Julia Couldn’t Return With Henry

The Season 1 finale provides the other half of the mystery. Henry and Julia reach Craigh na Dun with the now-born William and hope to return to the 20th century, although they are already uncertain whether their son possesses the ability required to travel.

Before they can carefully attempt the crossing, their pursuers arrive and everything becomes chaotic. Henry eventually makes contact with the stones and disappears, but Julia and William remain behind in 1715.

Episode 2 now offers a different way to interpret that moment. Julia may not have simply failed because of bad timing. If Maisri is right, Julia herself cannot activate the stones at all, which would explain why Henry traveled while she remained behind.

If William carried Julia through while still unborn, holding him after his birth may not create the same connection. Blood of My Blood has not yet explained whether one traveler can carry another through the stones under those circumstances.

Could Maisri Be Wrong About Julia?

Maisri clearly possesses unusual knowledge, but the series has never established that every interpretation of her visions must be completely accurate. Characters frequently hear her prophecies and then interpret them according to their own fears or ambitions.

There could also be another rule surrounding Craigh na Dun that neither Julia nor Maisri fully understands. Across Outlander, gemstones, timing, intention, ancestry and emotional connection have all influenced time travel in different ways.

Mrs. Graham tells Henry in Episode 2 that the stones may answer the heart’s true call. That conversation reinforces the idea that even people familiar with the old stories do not understand the complete mechanism.

Did Baby William Take Julia Through the Stones?

For now, William is the strongest explanation the series has encouraged viewers to consider. Julia was pregnant with him when she successfully traveled, Henry was not physically with her when she crossed, and Maisri now insists Julia herself does not possess the gift.

That leaves the unborn child carrying Henry’s blood as the major unexplained variable. Blood of My Blood may eventually introduce another explanation, particularly as Season 2 continues expanding the mythology around Craigh na Dun.

Until then, William may have been a time traveler before he was even born. Julia could have unknowingly made her first journey because her son, rather than Julia herself, possessed the ability to open the way.
