Halloween Baking Championship Season 12 Episode 3 Recap and Ending Explained

Halloween Baking Championship Season 12 takes its Museum of Unnatural History theme out to sea in Episode 3, Halloween Haunts, with a Disney-inspired challenge that comes with much more than the usual Haunted Heat bragging rights. Host John Henson introduces a heroes-and-villains cake challenge tied to the Disney Destiny, while judges Stephanie Boswell, Aarti Sequeira and Zac Young have the difficult job of deciding which baker gets a five-night cruise vacation.

The prize changes the mood in the kitchen immediately. Every baker wants safety, but this time there is also a vacation for the winner and up to three guests on the line. Marian Mulero ultimately delivers the cake that best combines the challenge’s two opposing sides, while the bottom bakers later face a Haunted Mansion-inspired magic mirror challenge that sends Baindu Squire home. Food Network officially lists Marian as the Miami-based owner of Chef Marian Cakes & Dessert Tables and Baindu as a New Orleans cake artist.

The Disney Destiny Brings Heroes and Villains Into the Haunted Heat

Episode 3 begins with the bakers gathered around a ship model before Maleficent makes an appropriately dramatic appearance. John then reveals that the challenge is connected to the Disney Destiny, a Disney Cruise Line ship built around stories of heroes and villains.

The bakers have two and a half hours to create one cake split between an original Halloween hero and an original Halloween villain. The concept has to read clearly from both sides, but the judges also remind them that strong decorating will not save a cake that does not taste good.

There is another surprise. The winner will receive a five-night Disney cruise vacation aboard the Disney Destiny for themselves and up to three guests. Several contestants immediately start thinking about who they would bring, and the prize gives the Haunted Heat a very different emotional weight than a normal round.

The Disney connection fits naturally with the challenge because Disney itself describes the Destiny as a ship themed around heroes and villains from Disney, Pixar and Marvel stories. Character experiences aboard the ship include figures such as Maleficent, Loki, Cruella de Vil and Black Panther.

Marian Turns Her Ballet Past Into a Light-and-Dark Cake

Marian builds her cake around something personal rather than creating two unrelated Halloween characters. She explains that she grew up doing ballet after her mother enrolled her as a young child, and she continued dancing until she was 19.

Her hero is a graceful white ballerina representing hope and possibility. The villain side takes the same basic figure and transforms her into a darker, distressed version overwhelmed by fear and negativity. That makes the cake feel less like hero versus villain in the traditional sense and more like two sides of the same person.

Inside, Marian uses red velvet cake with cream cheese filling, caramelized pistachios, pistachio praline and cherry marmalade. She is already thinking about the Disney cruise while she works, especially because she wants to share the experience with her 10-year-old son Matthew.

The judges respond strongly to both the design and the flavors. They particularly like the visual contrast between the clean white ballerina and the rougher dark side, while the pistachio and cream cheese provide richness inside. There is only a small criticism that the fruit component could use more acidity to balance the sweetness.

Marian Beats Ciarra and Lisa for the Disney Cruise

After tasting all of the hero-and-villain cakes, the judges name Ciarra Roberts, Lisa Pak and Marian Mulero as the top three bakers of the Haunted Heat. That already guarantees all three safety from the elimination challenge, but only one of them can take home the Disney prize.

Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse then arrive to help reveal the winner. Marian’s ballerina cake takes first place, earning her the five-night Disney Cruise Line vacation aboard the Disney Destiny for herself and up to three guests.

Marian becomes visibly emotional and says the experience is for her son and parents. The prize feels especially meaningful because she had already been imagining telling Matthew they were going on a Disney cruise while she was still building the cake.

For Marian, the win is more than safety. It confirms that one of the most personal concepts she has attempted this season can also succeed technically under pressure.

The Bottom Five Face Haunted Magic Mirrors

With Marian, Ciarra and Lisa safe, the remaining five bakers move into the elimination round. This time the inspiration comes from the Haunted Mansion Parlor aboard the Disney Destiny, with the bakers asked to create edible magic mirrors featuring a supernatural visual effect.

The challenge requires more than simply putting a reflective surface on a dessert. The mirrors need to communicate eerie movement or activity through ideas such as screaming, melting or oozing, while the desserts underneath still need to stand on their own in flavor and texture.

The task becomes difficult because the judges are looking for something that actually reads as a mirror. A translucent panel, shiny decoration or vaguely glass-like surface is not enough if the overall illusion does not work. That becomes particularly important when the judges start deciding who will be safe and who will end up in the bottom.

Baindu’s Sweet Potato Cheesecake Has Good Flavor but Technical Problems

Baindu chooses a sweet potato cheesecake with hazelnut praline and a ginger snap crust. Her visual concept features a screaming ghost trying to push through the mirror, giving the dessert a clear supernatural story.

The judges appreciate the straightforward flavor direction and believe it reflects some of the advice they had previously given her about simplifying her ideas. The problem is that important pieces of the dessert do not make it onto the plate successfully.

One judge does not get enough of the ginger snap crust, while the hazelnut praline used as decoration is too hard to eat comfortably. Visually, the ghost effect works, but the surface itself looks more like translucent glass or a window than a convincing mirror.

Caleb King and Elizabeth Suwanski also receive criticism. Caleb’s pavlova lacks the creamy center the judges expect and does not deliver enough of a mirror finish, while Elizabeth’s dessert has the intended ooze but struggles to communicate the mirror concept and does not bring through enough of its five-spice flavor.

Baindu Squire Is Eliminated in Episode 3

Elizabeth is the first of the bottom three declared safe, leaving Caleb and Baindu waiting for the final decision. Baindu’s combination of a missing crust, difficult praline and an edible surface that fails to read strongly enough as a mirror ultimately puts her at greater risk.

The judges send Baindu home, ending her Halloween Baking Championship Season 12 run in Episode 3. She leaves on a positive note, saying she is proud that she was able to share her artistry and that her son will one day be able to look back on what she accomplished on the show.

Halloween Haunts therefore produces two very different emotional endings. Marian leaves the episode with one of the biggest special prizes offered so far this season, while Baindu’s attempt to finally put together a cleaner, more focused dessert is not enough to keep her in the competition.

The remaining bakers now move into Episode 4 with the field considerably smaller and every mistake becoming more expensive. Marian, meanwhile, has already earned something even the eventual Halloween Baking Champion will not automatically receive: a family trip aboard the Disney Destiny.
