The Challenge has produced arguments over alliances, money, hookups and betrayals for decades, but Season 42 Episode 11 manages to build an entire storyline around Johnny Bananas’ underwear. The episode is officially titled Underwear Gate, and the mystery begins while tensions surrounding Anna Leigh Wilson and Bananas are already becoming uncomfortable inside the house. Lete believes Anna Leigh has been crossing boundaries around Bananas, while Anna Leigh insists they are simply friends. Then a pair of Bananas’ underwear is discovered among Anna Leigh’s belongings.
The scene is edited to make Anna Leigh look immediately suspicious, but the episode never shows her taking the underwear. Anna Leigh denies the accusation as soon as it comes up and says she believes Bananas or one of the men planted it. Bananas gives viewers no definitive explanation either and mostly treats the situation as comedy. That means the title Underwear Gate describes a mystery the episode intentionally leaves unresolved rather than a confirmed theft.
The Episode Never Proves Anna Leigh Took It
The most important distinction is between where the underwear is found and how it got there. The underwear is clearly among Anna Leigh’s things when the group discovers it, but no footage shows Anna Leigh removing it from Bananas’ belongings or deliberately hiding it. She does not confess, joke privately about taking it or give a later explanation that confirms she wanted it. Instead, she repeatedly says someone must have planted it.

Bananas also stops short of accusing her as fact. He says he does not know how the underwear got there and jokes that Anna Leigh could have taken it as a memento, but he also allows for the possibility that the situation happened another way. His response is deliberately unserious and keeps the mystery alive rather than resolving it. Based only on what Episode 11 shows, viewers cannot honestly say Anna Leigh definitely stole anything.
Why the House Is Suspicious of Anna Leigh
Underwear Gate works because the house already has a reason to interpret the discovery badly. Lete has been questioning why Anna Leigh touches Bananas, sits close to him and behaves comfortably around him, repeatedly describing the issue as a violation of girl code. Anna Leigh argues that Bananas is simply her friend and says sitting beside someone on a bus is not evidence of a romantic relationship. She also strongly denies that anything sexual has happened between them.

That existing tension turns the underwear into instant social ammunition. If the exact same item had appeared in another player’s bag without weeks of flirtation rumors, the scene probably would not have caused the same reaction. Instead, people who already distrust Anna Leigh treat the discovery as confirmation of a story they already believe. The episode therefore uses the underwear less as evidence and more as a trigger for an argument that was waiting to happen.
Could Bananas or Someone Else Have Planted It?
Anna Leigh clearly believes the underwear was planted, and the episode gives viewers enough ambiguity to consider that possibility. Will openly says he is stirring the pot and wants to remind people what is happening around Anna Leigh, which shows that some players are deliberately amplifying the drama for strategic or entertainment value. However, Will never admits that he physically placed the underwear in her belongings. Bananas does not confess to doing it either.
That leaves the audience with theories rather than proof. Someone could have planted the underwear to embarrass Anna Leigh, it could have ended up among her things accidentally, or Anna Leigh could have taken it for reasons she refuses to acknowledge. The episode never provides the missing footage needed to choose among those possibilities. The most accurate answer is therefore that the culprit remains unknown.
Anna Leigh Denies Anything Sexual With Bananas
The argument becomes much bigger than the underwear once Lete confronts Anna Leigh directly. Anna Leigh says there has never been anything sexual between her and Bananas and argues that she has simply treated him as a friend throughout the season. She believes other players are interpreting ordinary interactions through their own insecurity and prior assumptions. Lete rejects that explanation and insists the real issue is respect and girl code rather than jealousy.

The conversation then drags in marriage, earlier flirting accusations and personal insults. At that point, the underwear is almost secondary to the larger dispute over whether Anna Leigh’s behavior around men in the house has been appropriate. Anna Leigh repeatedly says there was no sexual situation with Bananas and questions why she would steal his underwear in the first place. Episode 11 never contradicts that denial with concrete evidence.
Underwear Gate Does Not Directly Send Anna Leigh Home
It would be inaccurate to say Anna Leigh is eliminated because of the underwear incident. Adrienne later nominates her because she is concerned about Gray’s team chemistry and believes Anna Leigh is one of the sources of internal tension, while Orange had already discussed Anna Leigh as a possible elimination opponent before Underwear Gate fully exploded. The nomination meeting then becomes dominated by Anna Leigh’s argument with Cara Maria rather than the underwear itself. By the time the group reaches the Arena, strategy has taken over.
Tori’s eventual choice is also based on the matchup she wants rather than the underwear accusation. She volunteers for Michele, passes on Cara and selects Anna Leigh because that is the opponent she believes makes sense in the physical elimination. Anna Leigh’s social reputation may have made her easier for people to target, but there is no moment where anyone officially says the underwear is the reason she must go. Her exit is the result of a much larger collapse in trust around Gray.
Why Anna Leigh Leaves With the Underwear
The final callback comes after Tori defeats Anna Leigh in Back Up Off Me. As Anna Leigh prepares to leave, the house reminds her about Bananas’ underwear, and Tori immediately recognizes what is being handed over. Anna Leigh decides to take it with her and laughs as she says goodbye. The scene is played entirely for comedy after a physically exhausting elimination.
That moment should not be treated as a confession that Anna Leigh stole the underwear earlier. By then, the item has become the running joke that gives the entire episode its title, and taking it on the way out is an easy way for Anna Leigh to own the joke instead of continuing to argue about it. She spends the episode denying that she originally took it, and no later evidence changes that. The departure scene closes Underwear Gate without actually solving it.
So Who Put Bananas’ Underwear in Anna Leigh’s Stuff?
Episode 11 never tells viewers. Anna Leigh says she was set up, Bananas claims he does not know, and Will admits to stirring drama but never admits placing anything in her belongings. No hidden-camera footage or confession reveals the answer before Anna Leigh leaves the game. The mystery remains intentionally unresolved.
That is probably why the storyline works as well as it does. The underwear gives everyone an excuse to revisit existing suspicions, makes the house even more divided before nominations and provides an absurd running joke that survives all the way through the elimination. By the end, Bananas does not have a verified thief and Anna Leigh does not have a proven explanation. All viewers can say with confidence is that the underwear was found among her things and nobody ever proves how it got there.
