Anna Pigeon Episode 7, “The Three Matt Skweikis,” briefly looks as though it has wandered into science fiction. Anna and Frederick Stanton are driving through the park while arguing about UFO sightings when a naked man, glowing an unnatural green-blue color, suddenly appears in the road. He has no idea who he is, claims he fell from the sky and eventually decides everyone can call him “Visitor.” What begins as one of the season’s stranger cases soon connects Anna to a 20-year-old disappearance, a wrongly identified body and a widow who has never completely understood what happened to her husband. At the same time, Anna’s personal life becomes considerably messier after the tension between her and Frederick finally crosses a line.

Why Is the Naked Man Glowing?

Anna quickly rejects Frederick’s enthusiasm for an extraterrestrial explanation and looks for something more practical. The stranger has only minor injuries, no obvious head trauma and no explanation for why he is naked or glowing. Anna eventually traces the strange light to bioluminescent algae growing in part of the river. Because the organism is visible at night but difficult to see during the day, she and Frederick follow evidence around the water to reconstruct where the Visitor may have been.

The search produces something more useful than an alien theory. They discover old clothing, boots and a wallet belonging to Matthew “Matt” Skweikis. The license expired years earlier, making the discovery difficult to reconcile with the amnesiac man they found in the road. For a brief period, the obvious possibility is that the Visitor may somehow be Matt, a man officially declared dead around 20 years ago.

Matt Skweikis Was Supposed to Have Died Years Earlier

Matt’s widow, Mira, explains that he disappeared during one of his annual solo camping trips. A sudden cold spell hit the area, and investigators eventually recovered a badly damaged body in the wilderness after wolves had scavenged it. The remains could not be identified visually, so authorities relied on Matt’s hat, car keys and other personal belongings. DNA testing never provided a conclusive identification, and the remains were eventually cremated.

One detail has continued to bother Mira. Matt’s wedding ring was not found on the body. She has spent years wondering whether he removed it because his feelings toward her had changed, and Anna recognizes how much that uncertainty still affects her. After losing Zach herself, Anna understands the particular cruelty of not knowing what happened to someone you loved. That is enough to send Anna back toward Matt’s old campground.

Anna Finds Another Body at Matt’s Campsite

Anna and Frederick search the now-abandoned camping area hoping to recover the missing ring, but instead they uncover human remains in a shallow grave. The dead man was buried naked, and his skull appears to have suffered significant trauma. Personal effects around the site place the body close to the same mystery as Matt’s disappearance.

The discovery creates the episode’s central puzzle. There is the body found 20 years ago and officially identified as Matt. There is now another dead man buried at the campground where Matt had been staying. Then there is the Visitor, another naked man found near Matt’s boots and wallet who cannot remember his identity.

Anna and Frederick jokingly arrive at the only description that fits the evidence in front of them: they have three Matt Skweikis.

Who Are the Three Matt Skweikis?

There are not actually three different versions of Matt. The phrase describes three people who, at different points in the investigation, could plausibly be identified as him.

The first “Matt” is the corpse recovered 20 years earlier. Because wolves had badly damaged the body, police identified the man through Matt’s clothing, hat and car keys. Episode 7 eventually reveals that those remains actually belonged to an escaped prisoner named Josiah Hamm.

The second “Matt” is the man Anna and Frederick find buried in the shallow grave. This is the real Matt Skweikis. The third is the mysterious Visitor, who appears near Matt’s possessions and initially cannot remember who he is. His true identity eventually proves to be completely unrelated to the old murder.

The confusion only exists because Josiah stole Matt’s belongings, causing one death to be mistaken for another.

What Really Happened to Matt Skweikis?

The cold case becomes clear once Anna learns that a prison break occurred around the same time as Matt’s camping trip. Josiah Hamm escaped custody and apparently hid inside the park. He encountered Matt, killed him and stole his clothes and possessions, presumably hoping that Matt’s identity would help him disappear.

Josiah never made it out. He froze to death in the woods, and wolves subsequently damaged his remains badly enough that investigators could not identify him physically. Because he was wearing Matt’s belongings when police found him, authorities concluded that the body belonged to the missing camper.

The real Matt remained buried near the campground until Anna uncovered him two decades later. His wedding ring is still with his body, giving Mira the answer she has quietly wanted all those years. Whatever happened during his final hours, Matt had not taken off the ring or abandoned what it represented.

The Visitor Is Finally Identified as Monroe King

While Anna is resolving Matt’s death, the other mystery begins solving itself. She and Frederick eventually find a crashed truck near the edge of the park, and its registration identifies the Visitor as Monroe King. The accident also explains his claim that he had been “falling.” Monroe had gone off the road, been thrown clear and wandered through the surrounding wilderness.

His nudity has another practical explanation. After falling into cold water and becoming increasingly hypothermic, Monroe likely experienced paradoxical undressing, a condition in which someone suffering severe hypothermia suddenly feels excessively warm and begins removing clothing. The bioluminescent algae on his body then created the glow that made his roadside appearance look supernatural.

Recovering his identity does not immediately make Monroe happy. Remembering who he is means remembering the life he had been trying to escape, including a failed bull-cloning business, money problems and a fractured relationship with his daughter.

Anna and Frederick Finally Sleep Together

The case unfolds while Anna and Frederick’s relationship moves well beyond professional flirtation. Frederick tells Anna he has continued looking into Zach’s murder, partly because he wants to give her answers and partly because staying involved gives him another reason to remain close to her. Anna already understands what he is really saying.

They spend the night together, although the following morning makes clear that Anna has no idea what she wants the encounter to mean. Frederick does not want them to pretend nothing happened, while Anna admits she is still seeing Jesse. Her instinct is once again to pull away as soon as somebody gets close enough to matter.

Frederick accepts the uncertainty better than Anna expects. He does not demand a decision, but his feelings are no longer hidden.

Jesse’s Proposal Leaves Anna With a Much Bigger Problem

Episode 7 closes by putting Anna’s emotional avoidance under even more pressure. Moments after Frederick leaves, Jesse appears at her home having apparently ignored Zoey’s advice about what he should do next. He asks Anna to move in with him and tells her that he loves her.

Anna does not get enough time to answer before the episode ends, which is exactly the point. She began the season trying to construct a life where nobody could become important enough to hurt her again. Episode 7 leaves her with two men who have now made their feelings unmistakable, while Anna has only just started admitting that she may want something beyond isolation.

The Matt Skweikis mystery follows a similar idea in a quieter way. Matt, Josiah and Monroe appear connected because of accidents, mistaken identities and objects left behind, but eventually each man’s story separates into its own truth. Anna is approaching the same problem in her personal life. Frederick, Jesse and Zach can no longer remain tangled together simply because she is afraid to decide what each relationship means.
