Rachael Raygun Gunn went into the 2024 Paris Olympics as a relatively unknown Australian academic and breaker. She left as one of the most recognizable – and ridiculed – athletes of the Games. Her unusual routine, including the now-famous kangaroo movement, spread around the world within hours and was followed by memes, criticism and conspiracy theories about how she had qualified.
Two years later, Gunn’s life looks considerably different. She is no longer working as a lecturer at Macquarie University, has not returned to major competitive breaking and is building a new career around public speaking and creative opportunities. She has also returned to tell her side of the Olympic story in Netflix’s Untold Raygun: Breaking Badly.
What Is Raygun Doing Now?
As of 2026, Gunn is increasingly working as a public speaker, host and performer. Her speaking work draws heavily from what happened after the Paris Olympics, with Gunn discussing subjects including resilience, authenticity, creativity, social media and dealing with intense public scrutiny.
Her official professional site now promotes her for keynote speeches, panels, workshops and hosting engagements. She has also offered personalized video messages through Cameo and has indicated that she is interested in pursuing new creative opportunities after the release of her Netflix documentary.
That represents a significant career change for someone who spent much of her adult professional life in academia.
Is Raygun Still a University Professor?
No. Gunn is no longer a lecturer at Macquarie University.
She had been associated with the Sydney university for many years and taught media and popular culture while also researching breaking, street dance, gender and cultural politics. Her academic credentials became one of the most discussed parts of the Raygun story after viewers discovered that her PhD research had focused on Sydney’s breaking scene.
Gunn accepted voluntary redundancy from Macquarie University’s Faculty of Arts in February 2026 amid broader cuts at the university. Her departure was therefore not simply the result of her Olympic performance, despite some online headlines making the two events appear connected.
She has since moved more heavily into speaking and other public-facing work rather than taking another full-time university lecturing position.

Did Raygun Retire From Breakdancing?
Raygun has effectively stepped away from major competitive breaking, but saying that she completely quit breaking would be misleading.
Following the enormous backlash from Paris, Gunn said in late 2024 that she did not intend to continue competing because performing competitively had become too stressful under such intense scrutiny. She later clarified that breaking itself remained part of her life and that she had no intention of simply stopping dancing.
That still appears to be the case in 2026. Gunn has not made a serious return to the major competitive circuit, but she continues to dance and remains connected to the breaking community. Recent reporting also indicates that she has supported local events and younger breakers.
For Gunn, breaking had been part of her life for more than a decade before Paris. The Olympics appear to have ended the competitive chapter more than the personal one.
Is Rachael Gunn Still With Her Husband Samuel Free?
Yes. Current reporting continues to identify Samuel Free as Gunn’s husband, and there has been no credible indication that the couple has separated.
Free played a major role in Gunn becoming a breaker in the first place. The pair met while studying at university in 2008, and Free, himself a breaker, introduced Gunn to the scene before eventually becoming her coach. They married in 2018.
Their relationship receives considerable attention in Untold Raygun: Breaking Badly, which shows more of the couple’s life together before the Olympic controversy. Free was also caught up in the misinformation surrounding Paris when false claims suggested he had influenced Gunn’s qualification. He was not a judge at the qualifying tournament.
How Did the Olympic Backlash Affect Raygun?
The consequences of becoming an international meme were more serious than Gunn initially showed publicly. What began with jokes about her performance quickly expanded into personal abuse and accusations that she had cheated her way into the Olympics.
Gunn has since spoken about the psychological impact of that attention and the support she needed while dealing with it. Two years later, she appears more comfortable revisiting the performance and has even said that rewatching it changed some of her own feelings about what happened.
Rather than trying to erase Raygun from her identity, Gunn is now using the experience as part of her next career. Her public-speaking work openly draws lessons from going viral, experiencing failure in front of an enormous audience and rebuilding afterward.

Where Is Raygun Now After Untold: Breaking Badly?
Untold Raygun: Breaking Badly arrives at an important point in that transition. Gunn has described the documentary as an opportunity to address misinformation surrounding her Olympic journey while also closing a chapter of her life.
She is not currently trying to return to the Olympics, and breaking will not be part of the 2028 Los Angeles Games anyway. She is also no longer pursuing the same university career she had before Paris.
Instead, Rachael Gunn in 2026 is a former university lecturer and Olympic competitor who is reinventing herself as a speaker, host and creative personality while remaining connected to breaking outside major competition.
The performance that made Raygun famous lasted only a few minutes. Two years later, Gunn appears to be trying to make sure those few minutes do not define everything she does next.
