The Rick and Morty Season 9 finale saves one last multiversal headache for after the credits. While “Field of Dreams” spends most of its runtime breaking Morty down, the tag returns to Mr. Poopybutthole and continues the cliffhanger that began two seasons earlier. Amy has captured the man living as her husband, exposed him as an impostor, and turned him into the biological key for a search across realities. Then the machine explodes. Is Mr. Poopybutthole dead? Not officially. The scene leaves two versions of him in danger and gives neither one a confirmed fate.

The following article contains full spoilers for Rick and Morty Season 9 Episode 10, “Field of Dreams.”

What Happens in the Season 9 Post-Credits Scene?

The post-credits scene shows Amy and a scientific team using the captive Mr. Poopybutthole to locate the husband he replaced.

At first, the familiar yellow chaos magnet addresses the audience and comments on the season as though this is another harmless finale check-in. The camera reveals the less cheerful reality: he is restrained inside a machine while Amy and the researchers prepare a multiversal jump.

The team uses his DNA or dimensional signature to create a waypoint leading to Amy’s original husband. Once the fourth-dimensional thrusters engage, the machine overloads and explodes. The crew rushes to escape, but Mr. Poopybutthole remains locked in place as the scene cuts away. It is an impressively rude place to stop, even for this show.

Which Mr. Poopybutthole Is Being Held Captive?

The prisoner is the Mr. Poopybutthole audiences have followed for years, but he is an impostor from Amy’s point of view.

In the Season 7 finale, the long-running Mr. Poopybutthole steals Rick’s portal gun and enters a reality where another version of him still has a happy life with Amy and their son. He removes that counterpart and takes his place, hoping nobody notices that the husband who came home is a replacement.

Amy notices. By the Season 8 finale, researchers determine that his atomic vibrations do not match their reality, confirming that he came from somewhere else. The Season 9 tag begins after that discovery, with Amy trying to reverse what he did.

So the captive is “our” Mr. Poopybutthole. The missing man is the native Mr. Poopybutthole from Amy’s dimension.

Is Mr. Poopybutthole Still Alive?

Yes, Mr. Poopybutthole is alive when the experiment begins, but his condition after the explosion remains unknown.

The episode never shows a body, a confirmed death, or the aftermath of the blast. The explosion could have killed him, thrown him into another dimension, or completed the jump in an unstable way. Declaring him dead would be guesswork.

The same uncertainty surrounds Amy’s original husband. Some earlier coverage described the Season 7 replacement as murder, but the series did not provide a corpse or firm confirmation. More importantly, the Season 9 finale treats the displaced husband as someone who might be found and brought back. Amy clearly believes there is still something to retrieve.

For now, neither version is officially dead. One is missing, while the other may have just taken the worst interdimensional flight imaginable.

Why Does Amy Need the Impostor’s DNA?

Amy needs the impostor because his body carries the dimensional information required to trace where he came from and possibly where her husband was sent.

Season 8 establishes that his atoms do not match the reality he invaded. Amy and the scientists treat his physical makeup like a return address written at the molecular level. If people from different realities possess distinct atomic vibrations, the captive can help the machine identify the route used during the replacement.

Amy is not trying to rescue the man in the chair. She is using him to undo his crime. That turns the experiment into both a rescue mission and a punishment. Scientific ethics have rarely slowed anyone down in this universe, and Amy has apparently stopped pretending otherwise.

Her plan also reveals how technically capable she is. Mr. Poopybutthole assumed he could steal an alternate life because the new Amy would never understand what happened. Instead, she detects the switch, assembles a research team and builds a machine capable of following him across the multiverse. He may have chosen the wrong family to infiltrate.

What Does the Explosion Mean?

The explosion suggests the experiment either failed catastrophically or succeeded in a form the scientists could not control.

No stable portal appears, and Amy does not reunite with her husband before the scene ends. Still, the blast occurs after the fourth-dimensional thrusters activate, indicating that the machine may have reached beyond ordinary space before malfunctioning.

My read is that the explosion transported the captive rather than killing him. The show has spent three finales developing this storyline, so vaporizing him without revealing the missing counterpart would be a strangely abrupt payoff. Sending the two versions into the same unknown reality would create a much messier problem.

A darker possibility is that Amy’s machine reached its target but pulled back the wrong person, creature or version. It could even have exchanged the two Mr. Poopybuttholes again, leaving Amy with another identity problem and substantially less laboratory.

On Rick and Morty, successful science is often just failure wearing better equipment.

Rick and Morty Season 9 Finale

How Does This Connect to Seasons 7 and 8?

The Season 9 tag completes a three-part post-credits story about Mr. Poopybutthole refusing to accept the life he ruined.

Season 7 shows him stealing another version’s marriage rather than rebuilding his own. Executive producer Steve Levy later described him as “very unwell” and said he was no longer the hero viewers once assumed him to be. Season 8 reveals that Amy has discovered the switch. Season 9 turns that suspicion into an attempted retrieval.

The storyline has transformed a recurring finale joke into one of the show’s darker continuing plots. Mr. Poopybutthole was originally the upbeat family friend whom Beth accidentally shot in “Total Rickall.” His later appearances followed his marriage, fatherhood, lost teaching career, addiction problems and separation from Amy.

His latest mistake resembles Rick’s worst habit: when reality becomes painful, he searches for another one instead of taking responsibility. Mr. Poopybutthole convinced himself that replacing another man counted as recovery. Amy’s machine is the bill finally arriving.

Why Did Mr. Poopybutthole Replace His Alternate Self?

Mr. Poopybutthole replaced his alternate self because he wanted his marriage and family back without repairing the damage that ended them.

Amy had left him after his life and sobriety deteriorated. Although Season 7 appeared to move him toward accepting that loss, its finale revealed that he had chosen a shortcut. Rather than earn forgiveness from his own Amy, he found a reality where another version of himself had made better choices.

That decision makes him considerably harder to sympathize with. He does not merely enter another universe and pretend to belong there. He removes a man from his own home, takes his place and expects Amy and their son to unknowingly live with the substitute.

The Season 9 scene finally shifts attention toward Amy’s perspective. To her, the captive is not a sad former husband looking for another chance. He is the person who abducted her real partner and occupied his life.

What Does the Scene Set Up for Season 10?

The scene sets up a possible confrontation between Amy, the familiar Mr. Poopybutthole and the native husband he displaced.

Season 10 could reveal that the explosion sent the impostor back to his original dimension, pulled Amy’s husband into the laboratory, or stranded everyone somewhere outside the normal multiverse. Any option would force the captive character to confront the life he stole.

The finale does not confirm that this plot will dominate Season 10. The series often leaves post-credits disasters untouched for long stretches. However, three consecutive finale tags now form one clear storyline, making future follow-up more likely than a simple reset. Post-finale coverage has similarly treated his fate as unresolved rather than confirmed death.

The safest answer is that Mr. Poopybutthole is probably alive, but absolutely not safe. Amy’s real husband may also be alive somewhere in the multiverse. The explosion does not close their story. It finally sends it hurtling toward a reckoning.
