Rick and Morty ends Season 9 by letting Morty Smith (Harry Belden) search for proof that he matters, then making him wish he had stayed home. In “Field of Dreams,” funeral hopping leads him to the grieving family of a dead counterpart named Mort. Their ideal father, Jerry Smith (Chris Parnell), becomes possessive, while a sober version of Rick Sanchez (Ian Cardoni) is pushed back toward alcohol and portal science. By the time the alternate Smiths are dead, Morty has learned that another family cannot save him from the damage he carries. It is bleak and allergic to easy closure.

What happens at the multiversal estate sale?

Rick and Morty visit a dead Smith family’s estate sale, where alternate Ricks strip the house for parts and Morty discovers funeral hopping.

A Smith household in an unnamed reality has died after eating brutally spicy chili. Portals open almost immediately, and interdimensional bargain hunters flood the property. Rick grabs a frictionless motorcycle platform while Morty objects to the ghoulish shopping spree. Nothing says grief processing like browsing a dead version of yourself’s furniture.

Morty meets Cool Morty (also Belden), whose eyes resemble sunglasses. He visits realities where Mortys have died to watch their families mourn. After giving Morty a spare portal gun, Cool Morty sends him off. Rick refuses to join, so Morty leaves alone.

Why does Morty start funeral hopping?

Morty starts funeral hopping because he wants to know whether anyone would truly miss him if he died.

At the funeral of Biglegs Morty, he watches Jessica (Kari Wahlgren) grieve openly. A montage carries him through services for Burnt Toast Morty, VR Morty, a monster shaped Morty, a goth Morty, and several other absurd variants.

The joke darkens because the Mortys get sillier while his need gets more serious. Morty is not planning his death. He is measuring the emotional space it would leave behind after Rick refused to come.

He wants evidence of value beyond being useful to Rick. Every funeral offers a controlled form of love where nobody can dismiss the dead Morty. It is comfort obtained through trespassing.

Why does Morty stay with Mort’s family?

Morty keeps returning to Mort’s family because they offer the stability and affection missing from his own home.

Mort was a gifted teenager who excelled at nearly everything. After his burial, Morty is discovered near the grave and brought before alternate Beth Smith (Sarah Chalke), Summer Smith (Spencer Grammer), and Fatherly Jerry. They accept his explanation and understand that he is not their son returned from the dead.

Jerry says nobody can replace Mort, but invites Morty to visit whenever he needs a home. The family has cut Professor Rick out because of his drinking, making it look healthier than Morty’s patchwork household. (His current family is already assembled from several realities.)

Morty returns after finding the usual passive aggression at home. At the family cabin, Jerry explains that Mort’s achievements never defined his love: “I loved him because he was mine. Because he was my son.” Morty has spent years as a sidekick, shield, and test subject. Here, a father figure claims him without asking him to earn it. This is Rick and Morty, so kindness arrives with a timer.

Why does Fatherly Jerry turn on Morty?

Fatherly Jerry turns on Morty because his affection is possessive, and the portal gun threatens his fantasy of replacing Mort.

At the cabin, Jerry asks Morty to destroy the gun and choose this family permanently. Morty hesitates, correctly sensing that love should not require surrendering every route home. Jerry tries to take it, the device breaks during the struggle, and Morty realizes he is trapped.

For once, Morty makes the smart choice and runs. In the woods, he finds Mort’s hidden camp and notes, which reveal that Jerry pushed his original son into a harsh outdoorsman life. Mort had been trying to escape a household that packaged control as devotion.

Grief makes Jerry’s replacement fantasy desperate, but it did not create his need to dominate. Morty learns that dysfunction can speak calmly and still lock the door.

Who is Professor Rick, and why does he relapse?

Professor Rick is this reality’s sober, nonportal version of Rick, and he relapses after Morty convinces him that interdimensional travel is possible and inevitable.

Morty reaches MIT and finds a Rick who never completed a portal gun. Professor Rick has stayed sober for 17 years, attends Alcoholics Anonymous, and lives with a loving second wife. Abandoned portal research makes Morty’s story credible.

Morty tells him that his first wife’s disappearance was not a personal rejection, but part of a catastrophe affecting Ricks across the multiverse. (The Omega Device erased every version of Rick’s wife.) He also says he believes in Professor Rick. It is meant as compassion, but it introduces a dangerous idea: if outcomes are destined, responsibility starts looking optional.

Professor Rick becomes consumed by the portal problem, neglects his wife, and drinks again. Morty keeps encouraging him because he needs a way home. My read is that Morty does not corrupt him on purpose. He assumes that turning him into a recognizable Rick is the price of being rescued.

How does Mort’s family die?

Mort’s family dies when Professor Rick’s unstable portal collapses into a violent vortex during their attempt to stop Morty from leaving.

Professor Rick claims he has built a working doorway, but his test is horrifying. He throws his cat through it, and the animal returns flayed and barely alive. Fatherly Jerry, Beth, and Summer then arrive armed and demand that Morty stay.

Beth fires into the portal during the confrontation, creating a vortex. Jerry shoots Professor Rick, who kills Jerry with the portal gun before dying. Summer is torn apart, and Beth takes her own life after watching her family die, despite Morty’s attempt to stop her.

Portals then open for another estate sale. Ricks and Mortys loot the ruins while Morty sits among the people whose lives he helped wreck. Death becomes inventory again.

The main Rick appears, giving Morty a route home after everyone else has paid for it. Morty also transforms Cool Morty into a long necked dog with one of Professor Rick’s failed devices. The estate sale becomes his ride home.

What happens in the Rick and Morty Season 9 post credits scene?

The post credits scene shows Amy (Lauren Tom) using a captive alternate Mr. Poopybutthole (Jon Allen) to search the multiverse for her missing husband.

A scientific team uses his DNA to open a dimensional waypoint. His fourth wall commentary gives way to panic when the machine explodes, leaving everyone inside with uncertain fates.

What is the closing scene of “Field of Dreams”?

The closing scene has a drunken Rick take Morty on a motorcycle ride, call Morty his son, and hear Morty accept him as a father.

Back home, Morty faces the same prickly family behavior that drove him toward Mort’s relatives. Later, Rick pulls him outside, lets him control the motorcycle, and claims the parental role he normally avoids naming. Morty accepts it.

Rick and Morty Season 9 Finale

The title’s father and son echo lands through a reckless ride instead of a quiet game of catch. It resembles reconciliation, but Rick is drunk and Morty is traumatized.

Morty is not declaring Rick a good father. He is surrendering the fantasy that a cleaner family exists somewhere in the multiverse. He chooses the one that already knows how broken he is.
