Wheezie Cameron finally returns in Outer Banks Season 5 after being almost completely absent from the story since Season 3. She is alive and still living under Rose’s control when Sarah finds her again in Episode 4. Wheezie immediately asks Sarah to help her get away from Rose, then reveals that Rose has a mysterious new boyfriend who reminds her of Ward. That information becomes much more important when Wheezie sends Sarah a photo and the man turns out to be Chandler Groff. Wheezie survives the final season and eventually reunites with Sarah for her wedding to John B.

Spoiler Alert

Where Was Wheezie Before Season 5?

Wheezie had largely disappeared because she remained with Rose after the Cameron family fell apart. At the end of Season 2 and into Season 3, Wheezie was living with Ward and Rose away from the Outer Banks, including their time in Guadeloupe. After Ward’s death, Rose continued looking after the younger Cameron, but her relationship with Sarah became hostile. Season 4 establishes that Rose will not even allow Sarah to speak with Wheezie, while Rafe talks about wanting to get both Wheezie and the Cameron fortune back from Rose. Wheezie therefore never vanished in the story, but she was effectively cut off from Sarah and Rafe for an extended period.

How Does Sarah Find Wheezie Again?

Sarah reunites with Wheezie in Season 5 Episode 4 after receiving a message that takes her away from the Pogues’ latest problems. Their reunion quickly shows that Wheezie is no longer comfortable staying with Rose, since she asks her older sister to get her out of the situation. Sarah also tells Wheezie that she is pregnant, giving the sisters a personal moment after so much time apart. Wheezie then tells Sarah that Rose has a new boyfriend who strongly reminds her of Ward. She later sends Sarah a photograph of him, revealing that Rose’s new partner is none other than Chandler Groff, the man who murdered JJ.

What Happens Between Wheezie, Rose and Groff?

Groff’s relationship with Rose puts Wheezie dangerously close to the main villain without her realizing the full story at first. By the finale, Groff has turned against Rose while trying to escape with the Cameron family’s Royal Merchant gold. When the Pogues return to Kildare during Hurricane Cassandra, they learn that Groff tried to kill Rose and that Wheezie shot him during the confrontation. Groff survives that encounter long enough to steal the gold and attempt his escape by boat, where Kiara later kills him during their fight. Wheezie therefore plays a small but meaningful role in resisting Groff before his final confrontation with Kiara.

Does Wheezie Survive Outer Banks Season 5?

Yes, Wheezie survives the final season and receives a much happier final appearance than most of the Cameron family has experienced throughout the series. After Groff is killed and the Pogues recover the Royal Merchant gold, the story jumps forward to show where everyone ends up. John B and Sarah have a son named JJ and eventually marry at their rebuilt home. Wheezie attends the wedding and stands on Sarah’s side alongside Kiara, Cleo and baby JJ. Her presence confirms that the sisters remain part of each other’s lives after years in which Rose and the Cameron family drama kept them separated.

Wheezie never becomes a full member of the Pogues or receives a major independent storyline in Season 5, but the final season does finally bring her back into Sarah’s life. Her return resolves the practical question of where she has been, while also allowing her to participate in the Cameron family’s final chapter. She helps expose Groff’s connection to Rose, survives his attack and is present when Sarah builds the stable family she never had growing up. Outer Banks could certainly have done more with Wheezie over its five seasons, especially considering how closely she was tied to Sarah in the beginning. Still, the finale makes one thing clear: Wheezie is alive, free of Groff’s danger and back with her sister when the story ends.
