Roy Bellarie is not confirmed dead at the end of “Beauty in Black” Season 3. While in jail, Roy suffers badly from heroin withdrawal and accepts an unidentified substance from another inmate in an attempt to feel better. Instead, he overdoses and has to be rushed to the hospital. The season ends without revealing whether he fully recovers, leaving Roy’s fate unresolved heading into Season 4.
Why Is Roy in Jail?
Roy is among the Bellaries caught in the fallout from the FBI investigation at the end of Season 2. Kimmie, Mallory, and Horace provide information that helps bring down several people connected to the family’s criminal activities. Norman eventually manages to get out, while Jules later escapes custody, but Roy remains imprisoned.
Jail also strips Roy of the privilege that has protected him for most of the series. His wealth and family connections can no longer immediately solve every problem, and his addiction becomes much harder to hide. Without normal access to heroin, Roy begins going through withdrawal.

What Does Roy Take Before His Overdose?
The series does not clearly identify the substance another prisoner gives Roy. Roy is already struggling physically when the inmate offers him something that appears intended to ease his withdrawal symptoms. Desperate for relief, Roy takes it without knowing exactly how his body will react.
Soon afterward, he overdoses. The lack of a confirmed drug is important because the story is more concerned with Roy’s addiction than with identifying a specific substance. His desperation has reached a point where he accepts something potentially dangerous simply to stop the withdrawal.
Does Roy Survive?
Roy survives long enough to be transported to the hospital, but Season 3 does not show what happens afterward. There is no scene declaring him dead, and Netflix’s official Season 3 material also describes his condition as uncertain. Therefore, it would be inaccurate to say Roy definitely dies.
This is different from Sylvie’s death, which the season explicitly confirms after Jules shoots her. Roy joins Horace, Norman, Kimmie, and Mallory as characters whose physical conditions remain unresolved when the season ends.
Why Roy Could Still Return in Season 4
Roy surviving would give the series another complicated Bellarie to bring back into the family’s power struggle. His father Horace has been shot, Norman may be dying, Olivia remains behind bars, and Kimmie and Mallory are both attacked during the Make It Rain shooting. By the time Roy leaves the hospital or jail, the family he knew may look completely different.
His marriage to Mallory is also badly damaged. Roy’s cheating, drug use, and illegal shell companies helped push Mallory against him long before his arrest. Surviving an overdose would therefore not mean returning to his old life.
For now, the clearest answer is that Roy overdoses but is not confirmed dead. Season 4 will have to reveal whether the hospital visit becomes the beginning of a recovery storyline or the final chapter of Roy Bellarie’s destructive behavior.
