Alone Season 13 Episode 12, titled Subzero, takes the World Championship into its most punishing stretch yet as Aaron Barnard, Nero Buys and Žiga Ogorelec continue battling cold, hunger and isolation in the Arctic. At this stage of the competition, survival is no longer simply about finding food. Every contestant is trying to preserve enough strength to keep functioning while knowing that one failed medical check, one bad injury or one lapse in judgment could end months of work.

The biggest development in Episode 12 is that all three remaining contestants survive and advance to the Season 13 finale. Aaron, Nero and Žiga all pass their medical evaluations, but the episode makes it clear that they are entering the final stage in very different conditions. Žiga still has the advantage of his moose, Nero receives a badly needed food and morale boost, while Aaron appears to be deteriorating physically despite continuing to catch an extraordinary number of rabbits.

Aaron, Nero and Žiga All Pass the Medical Check

The medical checks provide Episode 12 with its first major source of tension because all three contestants know that feeling capable is not enough. The medical team ultimately decides whether they are healthy enough to remain in the competition, and after so many days in the Arctic, even a contestant who still feels mentally strong can be pulled for safety reasons.

Žiga is particularly conscious of his weight loss. Even after securing a moose and eating substantial amounts of meat, he can see how much thinner he has become. He tells the medical team that he is still eating roughly three meals a day and does not experience dizziness, and the examination ultimately allows him to continue.

Nero also enters the check with some confidence. He explains that he has been eating snowshoe hare and supplementing the lean meat with beaver fat, which gives him a better nutritional balance than relying on rabbit alone. Nero later reveals that he receives no warning about his weight, a significant sign that his body remains in relatively stable condition this late in the season.

Aaron’s medical check feels much more ominous. He admits that his lack of body fat has made staying warm increasingly difficult, and his feet have been cold for weeks. Although he does not believe he has frostbite, he is clearly aware that his physical condition is deteriorating and that another medical examination could become more dangerous for him.

Despite those concerns, all three men are cleared to continue. The result means Episode 12 ends without a medical elimination, preserving the three-way battle heading into the finale.

Žiga Has Plenty of Moose Meat, but He Is Still Losing Weight

Žiga appears to have the kind of advantage every Alone contestant dreams about after successfully killing a moose, yet Episode 12 shows why even large game does not guarantee victory. He estimates that he is consuming roughly two to three kilograms of moose each day, but his body continues losing weight because the meat does not always provide enough fat to match the enormous amount of energy he is burning.

That concern pushes Žiga back toward fishing. Fish could provide valuable additional fat and nutritional variety, but the worsening winter conditions make retrieving his gill net increasingly difficult. When the pole connected to the net breaks beneath the ice, Žiga has to spend valuable energy chopping another hole to recover it, only to discover that the net contains no fish at all.

The failed attempt convinces him that continuing to fish may cost more energy than it provides. Instead, Žiga turns his attention toward extracting every possible calorie from the moose he already has. He uses bones and sections of the backbone to make fatty soup, eats marrow and organs, and works through parts of the animal that most people would never consider food.

Žiga’s strategy is no longer simply about having meat available. He is trying to squeeze maximum nutrition out of every remaining part of the animal, particularly the fat his body desperately needs. His moose remains a massive advantage, but the episode also makes clear that he cannot afford to become complacent.

Aaron’s Rabbit Strategy Is Becoming a Serious Problem

Aaron has one of the most frustrating survival situations of the final three because his trapping continues to work extremely well. By Episode 12, he says he has caught more than 90 snowshoe hares, an extraordinary number that would seem to suggest he has solved his food problem.

The problem is that rabbit meat is exceptionally lean. Aaron is eating, but his body is still missing the fat and calories necessary to maintain itself in brutal cold. Running his trap line burns energy, collecting firewood burns energy and simply keeping his shelter warm requires constant work, creating a cycle in which Aaron has to expend huge amounts of energy just to acquire food that does not fully replace what he is losing.

His physical decline becomes increasingly obvious. Aaron notices that his walking pace has slowed and that ordinary chores now require far more effort than they did earlier in the competition. He believes he could probably force himself to reach Day 90, but he is less certain that his body could continue much beyond that without a major change in nutrition.

The mental strain begins catching up with him as well. After repeatedly missing a squirrel with his bow, Aaron becomes deeply frustrated and acknowledges that his mind is starting to break down. For the first time, the idea of leaving begins to feel genuinely tempting rather than hypothetical.

Even then, Aaron does not tap out. His willingness to continue despite obvious physical and psychological deterioration becomes one of the defining elements of his Episode 12 story.

Nero Gets the Food and Mental Boost He Needs

Nero’s biggest struggle in Episode 12 is not initially hunger but isolation. After the medical team arrives, he admits that part of him secretly hoped his wife might appear with them because that would mean his time on Alone had ended. When she does not, Nero realizes he has to keep pushing through the long Arctic darkness.

The emotional weight of being away from his family becomes increasingly visible. Nero spends significant amounts of time thinking about his wife Jen and his son Lockie, and one of the episode’s most personal moments comes when he makes a pendant for his son. He wrestles with the contradiction of trying to accomplish something meaningful for his family while being physically absent from them for months.

His mood changes dramatically when he manages to catch a large pike measuring around 70 centimeters. The fish gives Nero an important nutritional boost, but its psychological effect appears equally significant. Before the catch, he had been questioning whether his exhaustion meant his body was beginning to shut down.

Landing the pike convinces Nero that at least part of his decline may have been mental. Suddenly, he recognizes that he could have much more strength left than he had been allowing himself to believe. Heading toward the finale, that renewed confidence could prove just as important as the food itself.

Who Makes It to the Alone Season 13 Finale?

Aaron Barnard, Nero Buys and Žiga Ogorelec all make it through Episode 12 and remain in the competition. There is no tap-out or medical elimination in Subzero, which means Season 13 enters its finale with all three survivalists still fighting for the World Championship.

Their positions, however, are very different. Aaron looks physically vulnerable because his rabbit-heavy diet is not supplying enough fat. Žiga still appears to possess the strongest food reserve thanks to his moose, but he continues losing weight and the episode raises fresh concerns about the condition of his feet. Nero finishes the episode with improved nutrition and renewed confidence after landing the large pike.

The result is a genuinely unpredictable final stage. Žiga may have the best food situation, Nero may have the strongest overall balance and Aaron may simply be willing to endure more discomfort than expected. After 78 days in the Arctic, the competition has become less about who is comfortable and more about whose body and mind can hold together the longest.

The Alone Season 13 finale, titled Worlds Apart, airs September 9, 2026, and will determine who becomes the first winner of the Alone World Championship.
