Jen and Zac Affleck have never had the kind of marriage that The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives could keep safely in the background. From the argument over Chippendales in Season 1 to their separation and intensive therapy afterward, their relationship has repeatedly become a test of how much independence Jen can claim while remaining inside the version of marriage Zac believes in.
Season 5 returns to that conflict in a particularly direct way. This time the disagreement is not about a night out with MomTok. It is about Jen’s professional future, and specifically whether becoming an actress could eventually require her to portray a romantic relationship with someone other than her husband.

Jen Wants a Career Beyond Reality TV
Jen entered Season 5 with a very different sense of what she might be able to do professionally. Her run on Dancing With the Stars had expanded her profile beyond MomTok, and she began considering projects that would have seemed much less realistic before the Hulu series became successful.
Those ambitions included music, modeling and acting. Early in the season, she tells Zac that posing for Sports Illustrated is one of her goals. Jen frames the idea as empowering, while Zac reacts negatively and makes clear that he is uncomfortable with the sexualized attention such a shoot could bring.
For Jen, the disagreement is bigger than a magazine shoot. She explains that Zac grew up with traditional expectations around modesty and women’s behavior, and she increasingly feels those expectations are colliding with opportunities she wants to explore for herself.
The Acting Argument Happens in Episode 5
The divorce threat comes into focus later in Season 5, during a conversation between Jen and Zac at a soda shop. Jen tells him that she auditioned for an acting role but did not get the part. Rather than treating the failed audition as a small career disappointment, the discussion exposes a much larger disagreement that had apparently already happened between them.
Jen reminds Zac that he previously told her he would want a divorce if she pursued acting and played a character who was in a romantic relationship. Zac does not deny saying it. He stands by the position and describes it as a boundary he has set for their marriage.
That is the crucial distinction in the argument. Zac sees refusing to remain married under those circumstances as a personal marital boundary. Jen sees acting as work and hears the ultimatum as an attempt to control which professional opportunities she is permitted to accept.
Why Zac Objects to an On-Screen Romance
Zac’s position is rooted partly in the conservative religious environment in which he was raised. Throughout Mormon Wives, Jen has described him as having traditional views about marriage, modesty and gender roles. Season 5 makes those differences harder to ignore because Jen’s career now increasingly depends on entering spaces that do not operate according to the same rules.
The issue is not simply that Jen wants to become an actress. The specific point of conflict is the possibility of portraying intimacy or a romantic relationship on screen. From Zac’s perspective, that would cross a line he is not willing to accept inside his marriage. From Jen’s perspective, a fictional relationship between characters is fundamentally different from a real romantic relationship.
The argument leaves them without much middle ground. Jen wants to know that her husband supports her ability to make professional choices, while Zac does not want “support” to mean abandoning limits he considers important.
Jen Says the Issue Is About Agency
What gives the Season 5 scene more weight than an ordinary disagreement over a job is Jen’s repeated use of the idea of agency. She does not simply ask Zac to become enthusiastic about acting. She wants to know that the final decision about her career belongs to her.
Jen says she does not want to feel controlled inside the marriage and worries that Zac’s refusal to compromise means she may never be able to fully pursue what she wants. By the end of the conversation, she openly questions what their future could look like if those differences remain unresolved.
The scene therefore continues an argument the show has been documenting from the beginning: how much of Jen’s life should be negotiated with her husband, and at what point does negotiation become permission?
This Is Not Their First Divorce-Level Conflict
Season 1 established the pattern during the cast trip to Las Vegas. Zac became furious after learning that the women had gone to Chippendales, even though Jen was uncomfortable with the plan herself. Their messages and the intensity of the argument led several cast members and viewers to question the health of the marriage. The season also addressed conflict around Zac’s gambling.
Their problems became serious enough after filming that Jen and Zac separated for a period. When Season 2 began, they were attempting to repair the relationship while also learning that Jen was pregnant with their third child.
The couple devoted considerable time to treatment and counseling, with Jen saying they were sometimes doing as much as eight hours of therapy in a week. They also underwent ketamine-assisted therapy, which both later credited with helping them communicate differently and rebuild the marriage.
For a time, the work appeared to create a genuine reset. Zac stepped away from medical school and acknowledged that he had often centered their marriage around his own plans, telling Jen he wanted to support her career. That history is part of why the Season 5 acting argument lands so heavily: Jen believes they have returned to a familiar question just as her opportunities are becoming larger.
Are Jen and Zac Affleck Still Together?
Despite the divorce discussion shown in Season 5, Jen and Zac have not announced that they are splitting up. They remain married and are currently expecting their fourth child. Jen announced the pregnancy in June 2026, less than a year after welcoming their daughter Penelope.
That does not mean the marriage is suddenly free of problems. In an August interview, Jen said there was a great deal happening between them “behind closed doors,” while also saying that Zac had been essential in helping her survive a very difficult first trimester. She was dealing with prenatal depression as well as the upheaval of moving to California and expanding her television career.
The acting dispute is therefore not evidence that Jen and Zac have already decided to divorce. It shows that one of their oldest disagreements remains unresolved. Jen’s career is growing in directions that require more independence, while Zac continues to hold firm views about what he considers acceptable inside their marriage.
Season 5 does not settle that conflict neatly. Instead, it leaves Jen asking a more consequential question than whether she will land a particular acting role: whether the marriage can continue evolving quickly enough to accommodate the person she is becoming.
