Few Challenge exits have remained connected to a single moment as strongly as Sarah Rice’s departure after Rivals III. Sarah and Johnny Bananas won that season together in 2016, only for Bananas to receive the power to decide whether to split their $275,000 first-place prize or keep it all. He chose the money, Sarah left with nothing from the final prize, and she did not appear on The Challenge again for nearly a decade.
Season 42 Episode 10 finally breaks that absence. Sarah walks into Trial by Combat as Tori Deal’s surprise mercenary, bringing one of the franchise’s most accomplished former competitors back into the Arena and unexpectedly putting her in the same room as Bananas again.
Why Did Sarah Rice Come Back to The Challenge?
Episode 10 does not give viewers one definitive behind-the-scenes reason for why Sarah decided that 2026 was the right time to return. What it does make clear is that this is not Sarah committing to another full season. She appears for a single special elimination as a mercenary, giving her the chance to compete again without having to spend an entire season living and filming in the Challenge house.
That distinction is important because Sarah previously explained that her life after reality television made a normal Challenge commitment increasingly difficult. She pursued a master’s degree in marriage and family therapy, built a career working with clients and said publicly that leaving a full client load for an extended reality-TV shoot did not fit easily with the work she had chosen.
Sarah also made it clear in those earlier comments that her absence should not simply be reduced to what Bananas did on Rivals III. Reality television had been something she enjoyed in her 20s, while therapy became the career she genuinely wanted.
A one-night mercenary appearance gives her something very different. She can return to the competition she once loved without necessarily returning to the lifestyle that made a full season less appealing. Episode 10 does not explicitly say that scheduling is why she accepted, but the format is noticeably more compatible with the reasons she previously gave for staying away.

Sarah’s Last Season Was Rivals III
Sarah entered Rivals III with a complicated history with Bananas. During Battle of the Exes II, she had made a late strategic move that sent Bananas and Nany Gonzalez into elimination, something Bananas treated as a betrayal when Sarah later became his partner.
Despite that history, the two became an exceptionally effective Rivals III team. They reached the final and won together, apparently closing much of the strategic feud that had defined their partnership. Then came the season’s final twist.
Bananas finished with the better individual score and was given control of the first-place prize. He could split $275,000 with Sarah or take the entire amount himself, and he chose to keep it.
Sarah had technically won Rivals III but received none of that final prize money. It became the last image viewers had of her as an active Challenge competitor until Season 42.
Episode 10 Reunites Sarah and Bananas for the First Time
The Challenge knows exactly what Sarah’s return means, and Episode 10 wastes no time revisiting the history. TJ jokes that he has not seen Sarah since Bananas “robbed” her, and the episode plays back the Rivals III decision for anyone who did not watch it live in 2016.
Bananas then reveals something more surprising: this is the first time he has actually seen Sarah since that day in Argentina. Their relationship had remained part of Challenge mythology for 10 years, yet the two had apparently never had an in-person reunion in all that time.
Bananas initially treats Sarah’s entrance like long-delayed revenge. He jokes that she has had a decade to prepare for the moment and might be ready to make him pay, but Sarah’s actual behavior is much less confrontational.
The reunion is awkward, funny and far calmer than the original betrayal would suggest. Sarah is there to compete against Tori, not Bananas, and the episode never develops into the explosive confrontation viewers might have expected years ago.
Are Sarah Rice and Johnny Bananas Friends Now?
Episode 10 suggests that the relationship is at least cordial, but it would be going too far to say the show confirms that they have completely rebuilt a friendship. They joke with one another, Bananas tells Sarah there is “nothing but love,” and their goodbye is noticeably lighter than their Rivals III ending.
Bananas even jokes that he will accept Sarah’s friend request when he gets his phone back. Sarah responds in the same playful tone, making the scene feel more like two people acknowledging a very old piece of Challenge history than reopening an active feud.
That does not erase what happened. Sarah had previously discussed the experience critically, and Bananas’ decision remains one of the franchise’s defining moments. What Episode 10 does show is that neither person appears interested in spending Sarah’s return recreating the anger of 2016.
Why Does Tori Face Sarah Rice?
Trial by Combat is designed specifically to test the Season 42 captains. Adrienne Naylor draws Pole Wrestle and faces Rachel Robinson, while Tori receives Balls In and is introduced to Sarah as her mercenary.
Sarah can earn $25,000 if she wins and would also send Tori home. Tori, meanwhile, needs the victory to secure her final spot, remain permanent Orange captain and bring $25,000 back to her team.
That setup gives the Sarah-Bananas reunion another amusing connection to the current season’s money twist. Tori jokes that if she becomes permanent captain and Orange eventually wins the final, she could take money away from Bananas and give it to Sarah.
Sarah immediately reminds everyone that promises involving prize money have not always worked out particularly well for her.
Does Sarah Rice Beat Tori?
Sarah’s return ends after one elimination. Tori defeats her in Balls In and earns her ticket to the Season 42 final.
Sarah does not make excuses afterward. She describes Tori as exceptionally strong, says Tori overwhelmed her physically in the elimination and credits her opponent’s desire to stay in the game.
For Sarah, the return therefore is not about rewriting Rivals III with a championship. It is a brief return to the part of The Challenge she always enjoyed most: competing in an Arena that gives her something unusual to test herself against.
Will Sarah Rice Return for Another Season?
Episode 10 does not confirm another appearance. Sarah does not announce that she is returning to the regular cast, and her mercenary role should not automatically be treated as proof that a full-season comeback is next.
Still, appearing at all is meaningful after nearly 10 years away. For years, Sarah’s professional life and her comments about reality television made another Challenge appearance seem unlikely, while Rivals III gave her exit an unusually final feeling.
Season 42 changes that. Sarah has now shown that there is at least one version of The Challenge she is willing to step back into, and the door that appeared completely closed after 2016 is no longer quite as firmly shut.
