Why Did Josh Send Cara Maria Into Elimination in The Challenge 42 Episode 6?

Josh Goldstein sends Cara Maria Sorbello into elimination in The Challenge 42 Episode 6 because he believes she gives Blue the best chance of getting its player back. It is not presented as an attempt to remove Cara from the game, even though Josh openly admits he has concerns about her current mindset and performances. As Blue’s permanent captain, he says his job is to make the decision that gives the team the strongest chance of survival. Cara’s reputation in eliminations ultimately wins out, and she proves him right by defeating Deb Chubb.

Why Does Josh Have to Choose Someone?

Blue becomes vulnerable after losing Trial By Terror, the Episode 6 daily challenge. Gray is the only team to win safety, leaving both Blue and Orange responsible for sending one woman into the Arena. Because the new captain system gives Josh control over Blue’s nomination, the decision ultimately rests with him.

That also changes the way Blue’s women approach the vote. Anna Leigh worries that Josh may not protect her despite their rookie connection, while Cara knows her reputation makes her an obvious option whenever a captain wants someone likely to survive the Arena. Josh’s decision is therefore less about identifying the weakest woman than deciding whose elimination skills he trusts most.

Why Did Josh Send Cara Maria Into Elimination in The Challenge 42 Episode 6?

Josh Is Not Fully Convinced by Cara’s Current Game

The choice is complicated because Josh has already questioned whether the Cara Maria playing Season 42 resembles the competitor whose reputation was built over many previous seasons. He acknowledges what she has accomplished historically but says her current mindset feels different and that she does not seem fully immersed in the game. Those doubts could have given him a reason to protect other players instead.

However, Josh also says he wants to preserve Blue’s numbers and must choose whoever he thinks will come back. That is the key to understanding his decision. He can doubt Cara’s current political or daily-challenge game while still believing she is the safest person to trust in an elimination.

Cara’s Reputation Makes Her the Least Risky Gamble

CT Tamburello recognizes the same logic before the Arena. While speaking with Cara, he points out that sending her could produce relatively little political backlash because nobody wants to face her in an elimination. He even suggests that taking heat away from Anna Leigh could potentially be viewed favorably by Orange.

Josh eventually follows the basic logic even if Cara does not formally volunteer herself. When TJ asks for Blue’s nominee, Josh describes Cara as the team’s undisputed elimination queen and sends her down. His language makes his reasoning clear: if Blue has to put someone at risk, he wants the woman whose history gives him the most confidence.

Why Does Cara Maria Face Deb Chubb?

Orange also loses Trial By Terror, which forces captain Tori Deal to choose one woman from her own team. Tori has already taken Michele Fitzgerald off the table because of their relationship, which leaves Deb and Izzy Fairthorne feeling much more exposed. Tori ultimately selects Deb, creating Cara Maria vs. Deb Chubb.

Deb is not a harmless opponent. She has already won an elimination this season and tells the group she believes she has proven herself, but facing Cara adds a very different level of pressure. Deb openly recognizes Cara’s elimination history and says that competing against her is the part that makes her nervous.

How Does Cara Beat Deb in Air Time?

The elimination is called Air Time and mixes rowing with memory and puzzle solving. Cara and Deb have to use rowing machines to inflate balloons that reveal symbol sequences, then correctly recreate those sequences on their puzzle boards. It requires enough physical power to inflate the balloons quickly but also enough composure to remember a confusing series of similar symbols.

Cara develops a more efficient system once she realizes trying to solve one sequence at a time is not working. She builds a broader visual reference on her board, allowing her to compare each newly revealed sequence and rearrange pieces as necessary. She makes one incorrect check late in the contest but recovers quickly and finishes before Deb.

Cara’s Victory Proves Josh’s Gamble Worked

Cara’s win validates Josh’s decision in the most basic strategic sense. Blue loses the daily but does not lose a member, exactly the outcome Josh says he wants when explaining how he will use his captaincy. Deb goes home instead, reducing Orange’s numbers for the first time in a while.

The elimination also has personal significance for Cara. She explains that she entered the season carrying grief and personal upheaval and that competing in the Arena gives her back some of the confidence she has been missing. Josh may still have questions about the Cara Maria he is seeing in daily challenges, but Episode 6 ends with a reminder that putting her into an elimination can be very different from actually getting her out of the game.
