Cory Wharton leaves The Challenge 42 in Episode 7 because of a serious medical emergency involving his three-year-old daughter, Maya. During filming in Thailand, Cory receives a FaceTime call from Taylor Selfridge telling him that Maya’s condition has worsened and that she is being transferred by air to a larger hospital in Texas. Cory then tells his castmates that one of Maya’s lungs is collapsing and that he needs to fly home immediately. There is no elimination, quit over game strategy or production dispute behind Cory’s departure. He simply chooses his daughter over the competition, telling the cast that there is a much bigger picture than The Challenge.

What happened to Cory Wharton’s daughter Maya?
Maya was born with tricuspid atresia, a rare congenital heart defect that affects how blood moves through the heart and toward the lungs. Cory explains during Episode 7 that Maya’s right ventricle never developed to a normal size and that she had already undergone two open-heart surgeries.
The episode spends time on Maya’s medical history before Cory receives the emergency phone call, making his later departure even harder to watch. Cory describes sitting beside his daughter through surgeries and says seeing her on an operating table has been one of the most difficult experiences of his life. He also explains that her previous hospital recovery lasted longer than expected after an infection complicated matters.
For Cory, Maya’s health has completely changed his perspective on what matters. He says experiences involving life-and-death medical decisions have made family, health and simply being present more important than many of the things he once prioritized.
Why did Taylor Selfridge tell Cory to leave The Challenge?
Taylor calls Cory because Maya’s health suddenly becomes much more serious while Cory is halfway around the world filming in Thailand. During the FaceTime call shown in Episode 7, Taylor tells him he needs to get on the next flight because Maya is about to be transferred to Texas.
Cory initially knows only that something has gone badly wrong. He later tells Nelson Thomas and the other contestants that Maya is being air-evacuated and that one of her lungs is collapsing. His teammates immediately tell him there is no decision to make and that he needs to go home.
The cast’s reaction is unusually united for a season built around team conflict. Nobody tries to persuade Cory to remain in the game. Even competitors who know his departure will completely change Team Gray’s structure understand that his daughter comes first.

Maya’s real hospitalization was even more serious than Episode 7 shows
After filming, Cory and Taylor shared more information about the health crisis. Maya ultimately spent 18 days in the hospital after what initially appeared to be a stomach illness developed into a severe respiratory emergency.
Taylor later explained that Maya went into respiratory distress, needed to be intubated and was transferred by Life Flight to Cook Children’s Hospital in Fort Worth, Texas. Her left lung eventually collapsed completely during the crisis. Doctors performed additional procedures while trying to determine why her lungs had deteriorated so rapidly.
Cory later described receiving that phone call from across the world as his worst nightmare. He also praised Taylor for handling the emergency before he was able to make the long trip back from Thailand.
Most importantly, Maya eventually improved enough to leave the hospital. Cory said in a later update that she quickly began acting more like herself after returning home and was once again being her playful, talkative self.
Why leaving The Challenge was so emotional for Cory
Cory’s exit hurts partly because Season 42 had put him in a strong competitive position. He was Team Gray’s permanent captain, which gave him safety and significant control over nominations. Earlier in Episode 7, he even talks about wanting to win money for his daughters and acknowledges his reputation as one of the strongest longtime Challengers who has never won the main show. That opportunity disappears in a matter of minutes.
Cory also connects his decision to his own childhood. He says his father was incarcerated while he was growing up and that he promised himself he would be present when he eventually had children. Leaving Thailand immediately is therefore not only about Maya’s condition but about the kind of father Cory has repeatedly said he wants to be.
His goodbye becomes one of Episode 7’s most emotional scenes. Cory thanks both longtime friends and players he has only recently met, then tells Team Gray to keep fighting while he goes home to take care of what really matters.
Did Cory quit The Challenge 42?
Technically Cory voluntarily leaves the game, but describing his departure simply as a “quit” would give the wrong impression. He does not leave because he cannot handle the competition, because he is losing or because he wants to avoid an elimination.
He withdraws because his daughter is experiencing a potentially life-threatening medical emergency.
The episode makes that distinction extremely clear. Cory had every competitive reason to stay, including captaincy and a legitimate chance to finally win, but none of those considerations matter once Taylor tells him Maya needs him.
His departure also has an immediate effect on the game. Because Team Gray suddenly loses its captain, TJ Lavin later cancels the planned male elimination and forces Gray to begin selecting a new captain.
Is Maya Wharton doing better now?
Yes. Public updates shared after the hospitalization indicate that Maya was able to return home and was recovering.
Cory later said she improved quickly after leaving the hospital and was back to behaving like the daughter he recognized. Her congenital heart condition still means her health requires ongoing attention, and her family has been open about how frightening that reality can be.
That makes Cory’s Episode 7 departure easier to understand in hindsight. The Challenge was offering him one of his better opportunities to finally become a champion, but Maya’s emergency made the choice immediate. Cory could return to compete another season. Being absent when his daughter needed him was not a risk he was willing to take.
