Christian Siriano made one of Project Runway Season 22’s most controversial decisions when he used his Siriano Save on Bryan Barrientos instead of Jeffrey Kelly Abess. Both designers had been eliminated after the Dancing With the Stars challenge, but Episode 9 confirms that Bryan is the contestant Christian wanted to see continue. Christian had framed the save around wanting to see more from the creative mind he selected, suggesting that he believed Bryan still had unexplored potential despite his uneven recent performances. What the show has not established is that producers forced Christian to choose Bryan for drama. That explanation has become popular among frustrated viewers, but it remains speculation rather than confirmed fact.
Why were Bryan and Jeffrey both eliminated in the first place?
Bryan and Jeffrey reached Christian’s decision after both were eliminated during Episode 8’s Dancing With the Stars crossover challenge. The designers had to create performance-ready looks inspired by assigned dance styles, with professional DWTS dancers modeling the finished garments.
Bryan worked with Emma Slater on a waltz-inspired design. The garment failed to convince the judges strongly enough on movement, proportion and its connection to the assigned dance. Jeffrey, paired with Britt Stewart for salsa, also landed in danger after producing a look the judges considered well constructed but not sufficiently exciting or forward-moving.
With no contestant eliminated during the previous week’s Battle of the Seasons challenge, Heidi Klum had already announced that Episode 8 would send two designers home. Bryan and Jeffrey became those two designers. Then Christian entered with the twist.
What reason did Christian give for using the save?
Christian did not provide a lengthy point-by-point comparison explaining why Bryan deserved the opportunity more than Jeffrey. When the Siriano Save was introduced at the end of Episode 8, Christian said there was a creative mind whose world he still wanted to see. Episode 9 finally identifies that designer as Bryan.
That makes creative potential the clearest on-screen explanation available. Christian has spent the entire season observing the contestants at a much closer level than the judges. He sees their original concepts, unfinished garments, mistakes and changes before the clothes reach the runway. His evaluation therefore does not have to mirror the judges’ decision or the audience’s preference.
Bryan had also demonstrated enough potential to win an earlier challenge, most notably when Heidi selected his red-carpet look for her Devil Wears Prada 2 premiere assignment. Whatever controversy followed that victory, it remains part of Bryan’s official Season 22 record.
Why did viewers think Jeffrey deserved the save?
The reaction is intense because many viewers believed Jeffrey had shown stronger construction and more interesting work across the season.
Jeffrey had earned praise throughout Season 22 for his technical ability and distinctive ideas, even during weeks when he did not win. His work could occasionally lean theatrical or costume-like, but viewers generally saw him as someone capable of executing ambitious concepts cleanly.
Bryan’s recent record made the comparison harder for fans to accept. His unconventional-materials look had been heavily criticized one episode earlier, but immunity protected him from elimination. His waltz garment then put him back in the bottom immediately afterward.
That led many viewers to see Jeffrey’s elimination as the result of one weaker challenge, while Bryan appeared to have survived several questionable weeks.
The strength of that reaction was visible even before Christian’s decision aired. Large fan discussions were already pleading with him to save Jeffrey, while others predicted Bryan would return and argued that such a decision would prioritize television drama over fashion.
Was Bryan saved because he creates drama?
There is currently no confirmed evidence that Bryan was saved because producers wanted more drama.
It is understandable why viewers have reached that conclusion. Bryan has been involved in several of Season 22’s biggest interpersonal stories, including his long-running tension with Bi Pham, arguments over his construction methods and increasingly polarized reactions to his confidence in his own work.
Keeping him naturally gives the show another strong personality entering the final pre-finale challenge.
But correlation is not confirmation. Christian has not publicly said producers ordered him to save Bryan, and the episode has not established that production made the choice for him. Unless Christian, a producer or another reliable source reveals otherwise, “Bryan was saved for drama” should remain a fan interpretation rather than the explanation presented as fact.
Christian’s own explanation points instead toward wanting another look at Bryan’s creative world.

Why is Christian’s decision especially risky for Bryan?
Being saved this late in the season does not give Bryan much time to justify Christian’s faith in him.
Episode 9 immediately sends Bryan into the wedding challenge alongside Jude Mikulencak, Bi Pham, Anna Molinari, Joseph McRae and Naheim Muhammad. Each designer has to produce two looks, a wedding gown and an after-party outfit, with only three finale positions available.
Christian even encourages Bryan to be bold rather than returning cautiously after his elimination.
That creates an unusual amount of pressure. Bryan is no longer simply competing for another week. He is competing after the judges already eliminated him and after Christian personally chose him over another designer.
If Bryan reaches the finale with exceptional wedding looks, Christian’s decision will look much easier to defend creatively. If he produces another weak result, the controversy around Jeffrey’s exit will become considerably harder to dismiss.
Jeffrey’s elimination is now final
The reveal also closes Jeffrey’s Season 22 story. Christian’s save was his only route back into the competition after the Episode 8 elimination, and choosing Bryan means Jeffrey is officially out.
That is what makes this decision more consequential than an ordinary mentor preference. Christian was not simply saying which designer he liked more. He was choosing which creative voice would still have the opportunity to reach the finale.
For many viewers, Jeffrey had already demonstrated enough to deserve that chance. Christian clearly saw unfinished potential somewhere else.
Whether he was right will now be judged almost immediately. Bryan has received the second chance, but with only three finale spots available, the wedding challenge will determine whether the Siriano Save becomes an inspired intervention or one of Season 22’s most disputed decisions.
