What Was Inside Hal Jordan’s Vault in Lanterns? The Dead Planet Explained

Hal Jordan’s mysterious vault does not contain a weapon, secret document or another Green Lantern ring. It hides an Einstein-Rosen bridge, essentially a tunnel connecting Earth to another point in the universe. When John Stewart and the Halogram finally open it in Episode 7, they discover that Hal had been using the vault to reach the ruined homeworld of Antaan’s people. The abandoned floating city and bodies scattered below confirm that John has seen this place before through Antaan’s memories. More importantly, the fear-inducing substance that destroyed the civilization is still present in the planet’s environment, suggesting Hal had been secretly investigating a mystery much larger than his death in Rushville.

Why did Hal keep a portal inside the vault?

The vault appears to have been built to contain access to something rather than simply keep other people away. When John and the Halogram finally unlock it, the Halogram realizes that the strange phenomenon inside resembles an Einstein-Rosen bridge. He describes it as a tunnel connecting two distant points through dark matter.

John quickly realizes how bizarre the setup is. Hal has effectively hidden access to another planet inside a storage unit in Nebraska. He also left behind practical supplies, including food, a canteen, a poncho and a gun, indicating that the real Hal had traveled through the portal deliberately rather than discovering it by accident.

What Episode 7 does not yet establish is exactly when Hal created the bridge or how he learned where it should lead. The Halogram cannot answer that because its memories come from an older backup of Hal.

Where does Hal’s portal lead?

The portal leads to the homeworld of Antaan’s people. John recognizes the place only after seeing a massive abandoned city floating above the landscape. Earlier in the season, Antaan forced John to experience the destruction of his civilization through their memories, but John did not understand all of the geography he was seeing.

Standing beneath the floating city finally puts those images into context. Antaan had told John that he was the last of his kind and that his people were overcome by extreme fear after being exposed to a mysterious gas. The population turned violently against itself, leaving the civilization essentially destroyed.

The world is therefore connected directly to one of the season’s biggest unresolved mysteries: who created or released the substance that wiped out Antaan’s people?

Is the planet actually dead?

Its civilization appears devastated, but Episode 7 proves the planet is not completely lifeless. John and the Halogram initially find an empty city and countless remains, giving the impression that nobody survived. The episode’s closing minutes complicate that assumption when a mysterious cave dweller appears and takes the Halogram hostage.

Even before that final reveal, the environment itself remains dangerous. John discovers that whatever affected Antaan’s people never disappeared. The contaminant is still present in the clouds, rain and water.

That becomes clear after John starts seeing and hearing things that are not really there. His behavior grows increasingly dangerous until the Halogram intervenes and realizes John has been exposed to the same substance that destroyed the civilization.

What does the fear substance do to John?

It forces John into an extreme state of fear and distorted perception. He begins hallucinating his father and becomes consumed by accusations about cowardice. The Halogram later tells him that he became irrational and nearly seriously harmed himself before being stopped.

The experience confirms something Antaan had already shown John through inherited memories. His people did not simply panic during a disaster. Something in their environment caused terror powerful enough to destroy social order and push individuals into dangerous behavior.

The discovery also explains why Hal packed a poncho. What initially looks like a random item turns out to offer protection from contaminated rain. That detail strongly indicates that the real Hal already knew the environment was dangerous, making his secret investigation even more important.

Why was Hal secretly investigating Antaan’s planet?

Episode 7 does not give the complete answer yet, but it establishes that Hal knew far more about the destroyed civilization than John realized. He created or controlled a portal leading there, traveled to the planet, left supplies for returning, and apparently understood the danger posed by its atmosphere.

That makes the vault less like a collection of Hal’s possessions and more like an unfinished investigation. Whatever Hal discovered on Antaan’s world may connect the Manhunters, the mysterious fear substance and possibly the circumstances surrounding his own death.

The final surprise makes that question even bigger. The planet is not completely abandoned, and the man who captures the Halogram somehow recognizes John Stewart. Hal’s vault therefore does not simply explain an old mystery. It sends John directly into the one place that may contain answers Hal died before he could give him.
