Twenty candidates come to a castle in the Scottish Highlands hoping to win the $250,000 grand prize. The participants are known as the “Faithful,” but among them are the “Traitors,” a group of candidates chosen by the host with the objective of eliminating the Faithfuls and claiming the reward for themselves. If the Faithful competitors remove all the Traitors, they will split the prize money; but, if any Traitors survive to the finish, they will take the money.

Each night, the Traitors gather and choose one Faithful candidate to “kill,” and that individual is removed from the game instantly. The remaining Faithful competitors won’t discover who was eliminated until the next day, when they won’t be able to enter the Castle for breakfast. The crew then goes on a quest to contribute to the reward fund. Some challenges will also allow participants to enter the Armory, where one player will be randomly and secretly granted the Shield. The Shield protects the player against murder, but not from the Banishment Vote at The Round. No player will be eliminated by Kill if they try to murder the shield bearer.

The first season of The Traitors featured 20 contestants. The American cast included ten civilians and ten celebrities, as well as former notable reality television participants.
