WhatsApp to stop working on older iPhones and Androids in 2023

WhatsApp only works on Apple iPhone models running iOS 12 or a later version, and the iPhone 5 and iPhone 5C cannot be upgraded to iOS 12.

As of the 31st of December, the widely used messaging application WhatsApp will no longer function on many Android smartphones and millions of iPhone devices. This is disappointing news for the millions of people who use smartphones throughout the globe.

It should be emphasized that the vast majority of devices are versions of Android, but that two iPhone models, the iPhone 5 and the iPhone 5C, will also lose access to WhatsApp on December 31.

Here’s why Whatsapp will stop operating on older iPhones and Android devices in 2023.

“Devices and software change often, so we regularly review what operating systems we support and make updates,” WhatsApp said in a statement.

“To choose what to stop supporting, every year we, like other technology companies, look at which devices and software are the oldest and have the fewest number of people still using them. These devices also might not have the latest security updates or lack the functionality required to run WhatsApp,” the statement continued.

“Before we stop supporting your operating system, you’ll be notified directly in WhatsApp ahead of time and reminded a few times to upgrade,” WhatsApp warned.

“We’ll update this page regularly to ensure that the latest operating systems that we support are listed.”
