The Amazing Race Canada Season 12 ends in Calgary with Tina and Liz completing a comeback that briefly looked impossible. The Hamilton twin sisters enter the final leg as the strongest team left in the race, but the finale immediately strips away that advantage when Tina struggles during the opening ring-toss challenge. By the time they leave, Tina and Liz have gone from first place to last and are trailing Eamon and Bec and brothers Michele and Matteo. What follows is one of their most important recoveries of the season, ending with the sisters reaching Jon Montgomery at Spruce Meadows and becoming the Season 12 champions.

The finale brings the final three teams into a Calgary Stampede setting and tests them with a mix of luck, delivery work, physical coordination and memory. Eamon and Bec get an early opportunity to capitalize on Tina and Liz’s problems, while Michele and Matteo also spend part of the leg near the front. The constant movement means nobody is completely safe before the final task.

Tina and Liz Fall Behind at the Opening Challenge

The first challenge immediately puts Tina and Liz in trouble. One racer has to complete a reverse-zip task while trying to land oversized rings on targets below. Tina takes responsibility for the challenge, but the rings refuse to cooperate and every failed attempt costs valuable time.

It is a particularly damaging mistake because Tina and Liz begin the leg in first place. They have spent much of Season 12 racing near the front, so watching both rival teams disappear while they remain stuck creates an unfamiliar situation. Tina later admitted that leaving the challenge so far behind made her believe she might have personally cost them the championship.

Liz refuses to treat the deficit as the end of the race. The sisters decide that there is nothing useful about calculating how far behind they might be and focus instead on completing every remaining challenge as quickly as possible. That approach becomes crucial because the finale continues to give teams opportunities to lose time.

Eamon and Bec Hit Trouble With the Hat Deliveries

The race continues through a Smithbilt hat task that requires teams to manage several details correctly. Racers have to locate the appropriate cowboy hats, remember where they need to be delivered and return with the proper proof of completion.

Eamon and Bec are in a strong position, but the task punishes even a small mistake. They discover that one of their deliveries is incorrect and have to work out which order went wrong before fixing it. That delay helps keep the finale close rather than allowing the leading team to build an insurmountable advantage.

Michele and Matteo also remain in contention, making the final leg unusually fluid. All three teams spend portions of the finale with a realistic path to the championship, which becomes increasingly important as Tina and Liz slowly erase the gap created at the first challenge.

The Drumline Brings Tina and Liz Back Into the Race

The major turning point arrives at the Showband challenge. One racer has to learn and perform a complicated drumline routine with enough precision to earn the next clue. By the time Tina and Liz arrive, they finally see the other teams again and realize their disastrous start has not eliminated them from contention.

That changes the atmosphere completely. Instead of racing simply to finish the finale respectably, Tina and Liz now know the championship is still available. They complete the challenge efficiently and move back into first place.

The recovery is significant because the sisters do not need another team to suffer a catastrophic failure. They simply keep moving while the earlier gaps gradually disappear. By the end of the drumline challenge, the team that had been sitting alone in last place is leading the final leg again.

Heritage Park Decides the Season

The final major challenge takes place at Heritage Park and draws on the racers’ memories of the entire season. Teams have to locate items connected to previous legs and correctly associate them with the places and challenges they encountered during the race.

This is exactly the type of task that rewards preparation as much as raw speed. Tina and Liz had already demonstrated strong recall throughout Season 12, including during challenges involving unfamiliar words and detailed information. Their professional backgrounds also demand constant studying and memorization, something the sisters later said helped them stay confident when faced with new material.

The task does not become an easy victory, however. The teams remain close enough that one wrong association can completely change the finish. Tina and Liz have to reconsider part of their arrangement before finally receiving confirmation that they have solved the season-long memory test.

Tina and Liz Reach Spruce Meadows First

The final clue sends Tina and Liz to Spruce Meadows, but even that does not produce a relaxed finish. The enormous equestrian complex forces them to keep searching until they finally locate Jon Montgomery and the eliminated teams waiting at the final mat.

Crossing the mat completes a remarkably consistent season for the sisters. Tina, a corporate lawyer, and Liz, a family physician and obstetrician, win five of the ten legs during Season 12. More importantly, their finale proves they can recover when the race is no longer going according to plan.

Their victory earns them the Season 12 championship, a $250,000 cash prize and OneKeyCash from Expedia toward a trip around the world. The prizes are substantial, but the finale’s lasting image is probably the comeback itself. Tina and Liz begin the most important leg of their season by falling to last place and end it as champions.
