Where Was Tenzing Filmed? Nepal and New Zealand Locations

The Everest drama combines Nepal locations with New Zealand mountain filming, including approved Aoraki sites and a specialist alpine camera operation.

Where Was Tenzing Filmed? Nepal and New Zealand Locations

Tenzing brings the 1953 Everest expedition to the screen through the story of Tenzing Norgay. Jennifer Peedom’s film uses an international production landscape, with Himalayan settlements and snowy climbing terrain contributing different parts of that world. Its locations become easier to follow once the places in the story are separated from the sites where the cameras actually went.

Tenzing was filmed in Nepal and New Zealand

The New Zealand Film Commission confirms filming in both Nepal and New Zealand, naming Aoraki/Mount Cook, The Remarkables and Mount Head among the South Island locations. Those are production sites, rather than evidence that the Everest expedition has been relocated in the story. New Zealand supplies part of the mountainous screen environment while Nepal contributes its own settlements and high-altitude landscapes.

Aoraki/Mount Cook doubles for Everest terrain

A Department of Conservation announcement dated June 12, 2025, identifies two approved filming areas: Malte Brun Pass near the Tasman Glacier, and a site near the Hochstetter Icefall on Aoraki/Mount Cook’s eastern side. Together, the sites were designated to represent Everest base camp and the Hillary Step. The announcement does not assign each screen setting to one particular site.

That notice records permission and preparations at the time, including set construction, environmental conditions and planned daily monitoring by conservation staff. It should be read alongside the Film Commission’s confirmation of the broader Aoraki shoot. A permitted location is a useful production record, but it is not a shot-by-shot account of the finished film.

The landscape itself helps explain the choice. DOC describes Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park as a place of ice and rock with 19 peaks exceeding 3,000 meters. Glaciers cover about 40 percent of the park, and its major glacier systems include the Tasman, Hooker and Mueller. This is a substantial alpine environment in its own right, even when filmmakers use it to represent another mountain range.

The mountain scenes needed specialist camera work

Screen NZ’s profile of key grip Evan Pardington and Grip Solutions describes the practical demands of filming around Mount Cook and The Remarkables. Equipment worked in temperatures around -12 degrees Celsius, and helicopter weight restrictions limited what the crew could bring into the mountains. These constraints affected the filmmaking apparatus as well as the people performing in front of it.

One solution was a custom winch that allowed a camera to descend into a crevasse for a sequence. The mechanism gives a specific example of how the crew could photograph terrain that was difficult to reach with an ordinary camera setup. The account describes a physical camera movement, without establishing how every climbing image in the completed movie was assembled.

The Film Commission also names alpine production supervisor Guy Cotter and aerial coordinator Jane McCurdy, alongside mountain pilots and safety specialists. Those roles bring mountaineering and aviation expertise to the task of moving performers, cameras and equipment into an alpine setting.

Patan provides a Kathmandu Valley heritage setting

UNESCO identifies Patan’s Durbar Square as one of the Kathmandu Valley’s seven World Heritage monument zones. It distinguishes Patan, Kathmandu and Bhaktapur as separate Durbar Square sites. That distinction matters when identifying a filming location: a Kathmandu Valley address does not automatically mean the shoot took place in Kathmandu city or in every heritage square across the valley.

Wilderness Film Productions, which identifies itself as the Nepal shoot’s location manager, lists Patan Durbar Square among the production sites. Its account emphasizes the Newari architecture and courtyards. UNESCO’s description of the valley’s monuments also highlights their brick, timber and decorative craftsmanship, giving architectural context to the setting rather than additional proof of filming elsewhere.

Bandipur and Jomsom represent other places in the story

The same production partner says Bandipur’s streets stood in for Darjeeling, while Jomsom in Mustang district represented Tibet in the film. These are examples of screen geography crossing national boundaries: a location in Nepal can appear as another place entirely. The account also names Khumjung village in Solukhumbu, within the Everest region, as a filming site.

Namche Bazaar was planned, then the schedule changed

Namche Bazaar appears in Wilderness’s account as an intended location that the production moved away from following a weather-driven schedule change. It should therefore be distinguished from the sites the company identifies as used. This makes it a planned site, rather than a confirmed filming destination.
