‘Spirit In The Blood’ Film Recap and Ending Explained

The “monster” that has been killing girls in the mountain community is a man. In the final sequence of Carly May Borgstrom’s debut feature Spirit in the Blood, Emerson Grimm walks alone to the forest cave her group had been using for their rituals. A figure emerges from the undergrowth. When she gets close enough to see clearly, the creature is a man wearing a costume. He is one of the volunteers the local pastor had organized to patrol the forest and protect the town’s women. The person assigned to keep girls safe had been hunting them. That is the ending the film has been building toward from its opening scene.

What Is Spirit in the Blood?

Spirit in the Blood is a 2024 Germany-Canada co-production written and directed by Borgstrom, a Canadian filmmaker who had previously made a short, A White Bright Light (2016), and directed a children’s theatre company in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. The feature is produced by Verena Grafe-Hoft for Hamburg-based Junafilm and Noah Segal for Toronto’s Elevation Pictures, with world sales through Protagonist Pictures. Financing came from Telefilm Canada, the German Federal Film Fund, the MOIN Film Fund Hamburg Schleswig-Holstein, Creative Europe MEDIA, Ontario Creates, and German broadcaster NDR in co-production with Arte.

The film world-premiered at Filmfest Hamburg in early October 2024. It then screened at the Sitges International Film Festival, where it earned a nomination for the New Visions Award. It was also nominated for the German Film Critics Award for Best Debut and for the Hamburg Production Award. After a select Canadian theatrical release beginning November 1, 2024, it became available on VOD and later on Max, where it ranked sixth on the platform’s global Top 10 in July 2025, roughly nine months after release.

The runtime is 98 minutes.

Who Are Emerson Grimm and Delilah Soleil?

Emerson Grimm (Summer H. Howell, who appeared in Curse of Chucky in 2013) is a teenage outsider whose father Julian (Greg Bryk, Saw V) has moved the family back to the small town where he grew up. Delilah Soleil (Sarah-Maxine Racicot) is another outcast, whose single mother Gracie (Kimberly-Sue Murray) is looked down on by the congregation. The story is set in a tightly controlled, religiously organized mountain community where a local girl has already been found dead in the woods before the film begins.

Julian is shown early to be emotionally domineering: in one scene he forces Emerson out of the car and leaves her to walk home alone, despite the known danger in the area. The community runs under the authority of Pastor Carl (Michael Wittenborn, who appeared in Netflix’s All Quiet on the Western Front). Emerson, bookish and socially withdrawn, is an immediate target for her new classmates. After a creature sighting in the forest that no adult believes, she finds one person who does: Delilah. Screen Anarchy critic Shelagh Rowan-Legg described the bond between the two as “this first close friendship-crush,” one that edges toward a romantic feeling Emerson has no language to name.

The Blood Ritual and What It Represents

After Delilah shares that her rebellious side “lives in the forest cave,” Emerson connects it to a concept she has read about: she tells Delilah she sounds like a Scythian, a people who believed that everyone carries a hidden dark spirit capable of being summoned for strength, though one that feeds on blood and becomes dangerous if left active for too long. The two girls carry out a blood ritual, and the physical rush convinces them they have tapped into something real.

Whether or not any power is genuinely involved, the effect on the girls is concrete. They feel capable of refusing the passivity that adults demand of them. Other girls from school, several of whom also claim to have seen the creature in the woods, join the group. Cinematographer Zamarin Wahdat shot these forest sequences, with a score from Dorian Berner and Paul Timmich, building atmosphere through implication rather than gore. Exclaim! critic Courtney Small found that these moments of “rebellious sisterhood” are where Borgstrom’s film feels “most alive.”

How the Community Responds

When one of the girls in the group is killed, Pastor Carl moves to contain the situation. Rather than investigating the actual danger in the woods, he focuses on the girls’ rituals as the problem. One of the recruited girls breaks and tells the pastor everything, framing herself as a reluctant participant and blaming Delilah and Emerson. Others follow. Delilah, facing expulsion from the community, takes the blame herself to protect Emerson. The pastor’s response is to have Delilah committed to a mental institution.

Both girls arrive at this crisis already under pressure. Delilah openly challenges Gracie’s boyfriend Frank (Cory Lipman), a man whose interest in a minor makes Emerson uncomfortable even as Delilah, starved of adult attention, gravitates toward it. The film treats both girls as products of neglect: Delilah’s mother is frequently drunk, and Emerson’s father swings between domination and indifference.

Spirit in the Blood Ending Explained: The Man in the Woods

With Delilah institutionalized, Emerson decides to close out the ritual by returning to the forest cave and formally burying the dark spirit. She waits for Delilah, who does not appear. When she hears movement in the undergrowth and confronts it, she finds a man in a monster costume. He is, the film makes clear, one of the community’s volunteer protectors: part of the male patrol the pastor had organized to keep women safe.

The man attacks Emerson and begins strangling her. Delilah, who has found a way out of the institution, arrives and strikes him with a stone. Emerson, barely conscious, comes around as the man turns on Delilah. She picks up a knife and stabs him repeatedly, drawing on the technique her father had shown her for killing a cougar. The same knowledge passed down by the same man who had failed to protect her is what finally stops the predator.

What Happens After

The film closes with Emerson and Delilah leaving together. The ending is deliberately unresolved: in a recorded conversation with the nochnfilm channel at Filmfest Hamburg, Borgstrom said “I don’t think everything should have a clear-cut ending.” They can return to the community and expose the men behind the patrols, or leave entirely.

In the same interview, Borgstrom described the film as being about “female friendship, female fear, female rage, and blood,” and named Stand By Me as a reference point for its atmosphere, a coming-of-age story told from outside the conventional vantage. The parallel Borgstrom named holds in outline: a small group of outsiders walks toward something dangerous in the woods and is changed by what they find there. What they find, here, was put there by people who claimed to be protecting them.

That is the reversal Borgstrom’s script has been making explicit throughout. The pastor’s framework for keeping girls safe, the patrols, the purity codes, the swift suppression of the girls’ attempts at self-defense, does not catch the predator. It houses him. Our reading is that every scene in which an adult dismisses Emerson’s account of the creature in the woods also functions as a scene in which the community protects the man inside the costume.
