My Life with the Walter Boys Season 3 ends with Jackie Howard’s romantic life somehow becoming even more complicated, but the biggest cliffhanger has nothing to do with who she kisses.
Cole Walter spends much of the season pushing Jackie away because he convinces himself that he does not belong in the future she wants. By the finale, he finally realizes he has made the wrong choice and leaves a major race to find her. He never gets there. Another driver chases him down, repeatedly hits his car, and sends it rolling off the road.
At the same time, Eliot kisses Jackie, while Alex’s feelings shift in a completely different direction.
So yes, Season 3 ends with several unanswered questions. Cole’s fate is easily the most urgent.
Does Cole die in the car crash?
The finale does not reveal whether Cole survives.
His car flips multiple times after another racer aggressively pursues him and repeatedly crashes into the back of his vehicle. The season cuts to the credits without showing Cole afterward.
That makes his condition the biggest cliffhanger heading into Season 4.
Cole is one of the show’s central characters, so his death would radically alter the series, particularly Jackie’s story. Still, Season 3 offers no confirmation that he survives. The final scene is designed to leave that question open rather than provide immediate reassurance.
More frustratingly, Cole crashes just when he has finally decided to stop running from Jackie.
Why does Cole leave the race?
Cole abandons the final race because he realizes winning matters less than repairing what he broke with Jackie.
Mac had introduced him to competitive racing, eventually leading Cole toward a high-stakes qualifying event with a large cash prize. Racing becomes an outlet after his breakup, giving him something fast and dangerous to focus on instead of admitting that he still loves Jackie.
Before the final round, George and Katherine challenge the way Cole has been thinking. Their advice pushes him to stop treating himself as someone Jackie needs to escape from.
That finally gets through to him.
Cole gives up his chance at the prize and drives back toward town, hoping to find Jackie and presumably tell her what he should have said much earlier.
The cruel part is that he makes the right emotional decision moments before everything goes wrong.

Why did Cole break up with Jackie?
Cole ends the relationship because he believes Jackie will eventually outgrow him.
Jackie has academic ambitions and an obvious connection to New York. Cole looks at his own uncertain future and decides that he cannot fit into hers.
Instead of allowing Jackie to make that choice for herself, he makes it for her.
His conversations with Richard and Eliot only deepen those insecurities. Cole begins believing that Jackie deserves someone more compatible with the life she wants and that staying with her would hold her back.
It is classic Cole self-sabotage dressed up as sacrifice.
He believes he is being noble. In reality, he denies Jackie any say in their relationship and walks away from something both of them clearly still want. By the finale, even Cole understands the mistake.
Did Cole secretly help Jackie?
Yes. Cole quietly helps save the community center opening even after breaking Jackie’s heart.
Jackie throws herself into the project after their separation, only for a burst pipe to flood the building and threaten the entire event.
Cole secretly contacts Richard and asks him to help.
He does not tell Jackie what he has done and does not seek credit afterward. That choice says more about his feelings than most of his attempts to explain himself. Cole has convinced himself that he should stay out of Jackie’s life, but he cannot stop caring about what matters to her. Alex eventually reveals the truth to Jackie. By then, Cole is already heading toward the decision to come back.

Do Jackie and Eliot kiss?
Yes. Eliot kisses Jackie during the community center celebration.
Eliot has steadily become a reliable presence in her life, particularly while she is struggling after the breakup with Cole. He supports the community center project and remains close without immediately demanding that Jackie turn their friendship into something romantic.
During the celebration, the two dance together, and Eliot finally makes his move. He kisses Jackie.
The season ends before viewers see what she does next.
That is an important distinction. Eliot clearly wants something more, but the finale does not confirm that Jackie feels the same way. She may return the kiss, pull away, or realize that she is still too emotionally tied to Cole to begin something new.
Season 4 now has to answer that almost immediately.
Is Alex still in love with Jackie?
Season 3 moves Alex away from Jackie and toward Kiley.
That is one of the more useful developments in the season because the Cole-Jackie-Alex triangle has been stretched about as far as it can go without making everyone miserable.
Alex begins realizing that his feelings for Kiley are more serious than he expected. He even kisses her, but the situation is complicated because Kiley is dating Dylan.
Eventually, Alex goes to her house intending to tell her how he truly feels. He never gets the chance.
Dylan interrupts and sends Kiley away to help her grandmother, leaving Alex standing there with everything he wanted to say still unsaid.

For once, Alex’s romantic problem has nothing to do with competing against Cole.
Who is left in danger at the end?
Cole is the character whose physical fate remains unresolved.
Jackie faces an emotional cliffhanger with Eliot. Alex has an unfinished confession to Kiley. But Cole is the only major character whose life may actually be in danger when the season ends.
That gives his storyline much more weight than the romantic uncertainty happening elsewhere.
The finale also makes the timing deliberately painful. Cole does not crash while chasing money or recklessly trying to prove himself on the track. He crashes after deciding to leave that world behind and return to Jackie.
He finally understands what he wants at exactly the moment he may lose the chance to have it.
What does the ending set up for Season 4?
Season 4 now has three immediate questions to answer: whether Cole survives, how Jackie responds to Eliot’s kiss, and whether Alex ever tells Kiley the truth.
Cole’s accident will almost certainly dominate the opening. Even if he survives, the crash could change his future and force Jackie to confront feelings she has been trying to contain since their breakup.
Eliot complicates that further. He represents a connection to Jackie’s old New York life and, at least on paper, may fit more comfortably into the future Cole believes she deserves.
But that is precisely Cole’s mistake. He keeps deciding what Jackie’s life should look like instead of trusting her to decide.
Season 3 ends before he can finally tell her that.
The unanswered question is not only whether Cole survives the crash. It is whether he gets another chance to say what he was driving back to Silver Falls to say.
