Love Island UK is a British dating game show. It is a comeback of the old celebrity series of the same name, which ran for two seasons in 2005 and 2006 and was hosted by Caroline Flack until her suspension in 2019; Laura Whitmore hosted the programme from 2020 to 2022. The program has been very successful and influential in British popular culture; it was the most-viewed show in ITV2 history in 2018, and it was the most-watched TV show among its target group of 16- to 34-year-olds as of 2020. However, it has sparked great controversy, with four persons associated with the program committing suicide.
Format:
A group of participants known as Islanders live in seclusion from the outside world in a villa in Mallorca, continuously under camera monitoring. The Islanders must be paired up with another Islander to survive in the villa, whether for love, friendship, or money, and the ultimate winning couple wins a combined £50,000. The Islanders pair up for the first time based on initial impressions on the first day, but during the course of the series, they are forced to “re-couple,” where they may opt to stay in their present relationship or switch partners.
Anyone who remains unmarried after the re-coupling is eliminated and expelled off the island. Islanders may also be evicted via public vote, as the public votes for their favorite pair or potential couple throughout the series using the Love Island app, which is accessible on cellphones. The pairs with the fewest votes risk being eliminated. A twist has often happened in which it has been up to the Islanders to vote for one of their own off the island. During the final week, the audience votes on the pair they want to win the series and receive £50,000 in prize money.
During the inaugural season, Caroline Flack hosted the Thursday program live, when eliminations were common and new Islanders joined the villa. However, with the exception of the last episode, live episodes were dropped beginning with the second season. Each Islander has their own phone while in the villa and may only communicate with other Islanders through text – or get messages telling them of the latest challenges, dumpings, or recouplings.
Islanders and couples are often presented with a variety of games and tasks meant to test their physical and mental abilities, with the victors receiving unique gifts. Some Islanders are also sent on dates outside the villa, or they may earn dates by participating in tasks.
