Spoiler warning: This article covers complete plot details from all eight episodes of Lioness Season 2, including the series finale.

Joe McNamara’s team survives the Iran operation in the Season 2 finale, but the extraction comes down to the 82nd Airborne Division and a Delta Force unit arriving before the surviving team runs out of options. The final episode, “The Compass Points Home,” aired December 8, 2024, on Paramount+. It runs both of the season’s major operations on parallel tracks: Josephina Carrillo (Genesis Rodriguez) bombs a Chinese nuclear scientist convoy inside Iran, while in Mexico, Pablo Carrillo kills his own brother Alvaro to give the CIA the MSS agent it has tracked all season. Both operations succeed. The team’s near-capture, Josephina’s crash landing, and Joe’s private breakdown after the mission are what the episode refuses to skip past.

What Happens in Episode 8, “The Compass Points Home”

The finale executes both takedowns on the same night. Seven episodes set up two converging targets: the Chinese nuclear scientists Iran is moving to Isfahan, linked to a Chinese MSS influence operation running through Mexico’s Los Tigres cartel, and the MSS intelligence officer embedded in that cartel structure.

In Iran, the plan places Josephina’s Black Hawk piloting at the center of the attack. She bombs the convoy, with Delta Force operator Cruz Manuelos (Laysla De Oliveira) working the door gun.

In Mexico, CIA Clandestine Service supervisor Kaitlyn Meade (Nicole Kidman) and Deputy Director of Operations Byron Westfield (Michael Kelly) close the deal with Pablo Carrillo, Josephina’s father. In exchange for witness protection for the family, Pablo will take over Los Tigres, cut the cartel’s cooperation with Chinese intelligence, and allow the CIA to seize the MSS agent.

The Iran Mission: Attack, Crash, and Near-Capture

The convoy attack works up to a point. Josephina’s helicopter takes a hit during the assault and goes down. She breaks her leg in the crash landing. Joe McNamara (Zoe Saldana) leads her Quick Reaction Force to extract the downed crew, but IRGC reinforcements pin the team down before they can reach safety.

The episode brings the team to a choice: face capture by Iranian forces or take their own lives. The surviving operatives prepare for the latter. The rescue comes from the 82nd Airborne Division and a separate Delta Force unit, arriving in time to extract the team.

QRF team leader Bobby (Jill Wagner) is among those wounded in the firefight, along with operators Two Cups (James Jordan) and Tucker (LaMonica Garrett).

The Mexico Operation: Pablo Kills Alvaro and the CIA Gets Its Target

At Alvaro Carrillo’s compound in Monterrey, Pablo goes through with the CIA’s arrangement. He executes his brother and takes over Los Tigres. That move gives Meade and Westfield the opening to take the MSS agent into custody.

The season built Pablo up slowly as the pivot point of both operations. Josephina’s father is first approached when Joe offers him the protection deal. Our reading is that his willingness to kill Alvaro is the season’s clearest statement about what the CIA’s tradecraft asks of the people it recruits, and what it costs those people.

Where Cruz and Josephina’s Story Lands

Cruz and Josephina grew closer through the season, with episode 7 at Fort Liberty being the most direct acknowledgment of that relationship. The finale does not stage a formal resolution. Josephina is still injured and in recovery after the crash. The show leaves open where things go from here, tying their future together to whether Joe keeps both of them in the Lioness program.

Joe and Neal in the Final Scene

Back in the United States, Joe reunites with her husband Neal. He tells her she will always have a home to return to. Our reading of the line is that it is the season’s closest thing to an answer on the marriage, and not a declaration of repair. It reads as Neal stating the terms under which he stays.

What makes that scene land differently given the full episode’s arc: by the time Joe gets home, she has just come from a mission where her team was seconds from killing themselves to avoid capture. The political and intelligence apparatus counts the night as a success. Joe, in private, breaks down. Our reading is that the gap between those two realities is what Saldana’s performance in the episode’s closing scene carries, without the dialogue spelling it out.
