Will has spent three seasons behaving as if keeping Valley Forge alive is both his life’s purpose and the punishment he has been assigned for some forgotten crime. Tires Season 3 finally lets him imagine another option. After another humiliating run at the shop and being pushed aside from the important TakaTaka meeting, Will reconnects…
Few movies have made paradise look quite as threatening as The Shallows. Jaume Collet-Serra’s stripped-down 2016 survival thriller follows Nancy Adams, played by Blake Lively, as she travels to an unnamed beach in Mexico that held special meaning for her late mother. What begins as a solitary surfing trip becomes a brutal fight for survival…
The Shallows spends almost the entire movie keeping safety painfully visible. Nancy Adams can see the Mexican beach from the rock where she is stranded, yet roughly 200 yards of water and one relentless great white shark make reaching it nearly impossible. By the finale, waiting for somebody else to save her has stopped being…
Tires has never treated Shane as a man particularly interested in planning for next week, much less the rest of his life. That makes Season 3’s final surprise especially effective. After spending the season bouncing between old chemistry with Jill and a much messier connection with Lucy, Shane learns in the most public way possible…
For years, the American version of The Traitors has thrived on putting people viewers already know into Alan Cumming’s castle and watching their reputations work for or against them. The Traitors: New Blood removes that safety net. There are no Survivor winners walking in with strategic résumés, no Housewives carrying old feuds and no reality…
Umthetho takes a familiar family conflict and places it inside one of the most unforgiving environments imaginable. Nqobile Nunu Khumalo stars as Mbali Dlamini, an idealistic public prosecutor whose belief in the justice system is challenged when she discovers that her older brother Moses, played by Tony Kgoroge, is alive and running a powerful criminal…

While her family sees marriage as the safest path forward, Sybylla is determined to become a writer and…
Netflix’s My Brilliant Career spends most of its romantic energy on Sybylla, Harry and Frank, but one of the adaptation’s biggest departures from Miles Franklin’s novel is happening more quietly inside the Bossier family. Julius Bossier, played by Alexander England, is hiding a relationship with Everard Grey, played by Alex Fitzalan. Yes, Julius is gay…
For all the flirting, jealousy and romantic tension packed into Netflix’s My Brilliant Career, the final decision was never really about whether Harry Beecham could persuade Sybylla Melvyn to love him. She already does. The harder question is whether loving Harry is enough to make her surrender the future she has spent the entire series…
Netflix’s My Brilliant Career returns to Miles Franklin’s celebrated story without trying to recreate Gillian Armstrong’s 1979 film shot for shot. Developed and written by Liz Doran, the six-part series follows Sybylla Melvyn, a fiercely independent young woman living in Australia around the turn of the 20th century. Sybylla wants to become a writer, even…
Don’t Say Good Luck gives the familiar high-school musical story a considerably heavier burden to carry. Sunny Sandler stars as Sophie Birenbaum, a 15-year-old theater kid who unexpectedly wins the lead role of Jenna in her school’s production of Waitress. Her biggest artistic opportunity arrives almost simultaneously with devastating news: her mother Elizabeth’s cancer has…

Jack Reacher initially knows her only as a frightened federal employee who refuses his help and shoots herself moments later. What he discovers…
