The report, titled “2022 Year in Search — Themes and Insights,” was published by the company on Wednesday. It contains data that the company claims reflect the year’s trending topics. By “trending topics,” the company means the searches that received a significant increase in traffic over a sustained period of time this year in comparison to searches that received the same amount of traffic in the previous year.

In June, the judge ruled in Depp’s favor in the defamation lawsuit he brought against his ex-wife Amber Heard. This year, Heard ranked as the third most famous person to search for on Google Search.

This year’s Depp-Heard trial was another topic that dominated users’ search histories to a significant degree. In an opinion piece published in 2018 by The Washington Post, Heard referred to herself as a “public figure symbolizing domestic violence,” which prompted Depp to file a defamation lawsuit against Heard in 2019. The trial started in the month of April.

A jury determined that Heard defamed Depp and awarded him $15 million in restitution. In addition, Heard was given $2 million in compensatory damages for her $100 million countersuit against Depp. The trial judgment was the sixth most popular trending news subject.

Google’s 2022 list also revealed that the Oscars incident when Will Smith smacked Chris Rock after the comedian joked about the actor’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, sparked a lot of attention. The event ranked eighth in the most popular “news” category.
