Demon Slayer Infinity Castle Ending Explained: What Happens to Akaza and Tanjiro?

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle I moves the anime into its final battlefield, but the first film is not built around a confrontation with Muzan Kibutsuji. Instead, it separates the Demon Slayer Corps across the shifting Infinity Castle and gives its biggest emotional weight to three personal clashes: Shinobu Kocho against Doma, Zenitsu Agatsuma against Kaigaku, and Tanjiro Kamado and Giyu Tomioka against Akaza. The movie is the opening installment of the Infinity Castle trilogy, so it resolves several long-running rivalries while deliberately leaving the larger war unfinished.

The final stretch belongs to Akaza. Tanjiro enters the castle carrying the memory of Kyojuro Rengoku, and Akaza’s return becomes one of the clearest tests of how far Tanjiro has come. What begins as a rematch driven by anger eventually turns into something more complicated, because Tanjiro can only overcome Akaza after learning how to fight without broadcasting that anger.

Why Is Akaza So Difficult to Defeat?

Akaza’s advantage is not simply speed or physical strength. His Compass Needle allows him to read an opponent’s Fighting Spirit, giving him an unusually precise sense of where danger is coming from. Conventional aggression therefore works in his favor because the more clearly an opponent wants to fight, the easier that opponent becomes for Akaza to read.

Giyu pushes the battle further by awakening his Demon Slayer Mark, but even that does not create a clean victory. Tanjiro eventually understands that the answer is not more aggression. He has to become unreadable.

That realization connects memories of Inosuke’s instincts with what Tanjiro once observed in his father, Tanjuro. Tanjiro reaches the Transparent World, which heightens his perception of an opponent’s body and movement, and the Selfless State, which removes the Fighting Spirit that Akaza’s technique depends on sensing.

How Does Tanjiro Get Past Akaza’s Compass Needle?

Tanjiro’s breakthrough changes the meaning of the fight. Earlier, he is facing Akaza as the demon connected to Rengoku’s loss, but the Selfless State requires him to quiet that emotional presence rather than feed it. Once Akaza can no longer detect him in the usual way, Tanjiro finds an opening and severs his head.

Normally, that should settle the battle. Akaza, however, has evolved far enough that his body continues resisting defeat even after the usual condition for ending a demon has been met. For a moment, it appears that he may regenerate completely.

This is where Infinity Castle I stops being a straightforward victory scene. Akaza is not ultimately finished because Tanjiro produces one more stronger technique. The decisive change happens inside Akaza himself.

Who Was Akaza Before He Became a Demon?

Akaza’s restored memories reveal that his human name was Hakuji. As a boy, Hakuji stole to obtain medicine for his ill father, then later found a new home with martial arts teacher Keizo and Keizo’s daughter, Koyuki.

Hakuji cared for Koyuki as she recovered from illness, and the two eventually planned to marry. Keizo also intended Hakuji to inherit the dojo. That future disappeared when a rival group poisoned the well used by Keizo and Koyuki, leaving Hakuji overwhelmed by grief before Muzan later transformed him into a demon.

The flashback reframes traits viewers have seen in Akaza for years. His obsession with strength and his martial arts style are tied to a human life whose original purpose was to protect the people he loved.

Why Does Akaza Stop Regenerating?

After Tanjiro gains the upper hand, Akaza is still physically capable of continuing. His memories are what change the outcome. Hakuji remembers Koyuki, Keizo, his father, and the promises that once defined him, forcing him to confront how far Akaza has moved from the person he wanted to become.

Rather than complete his regeneration and resume the fight, Akaza finally lets the struggle end. The movie presents his final moments as the return of Hakuji’s identity, not as Tanjiro overpowering every part of Akaza’s demonic ability. His farewell also carries a quiet sense of recognition, because Tanjiro’s discipline resembles the kind of strength Hakuji once respected.

Tanjiro and Giyu survive, but both are left exhausted. Upper Rank Three is gone, yet their condition makes clear that every major victory inside the castle is coming at a serious cost.

What Happens to Shinobu and Doma?

Elsewhere, Shinobu faces Upper Rank Two, Doma, the demon connected to the loss of her sister Kanae. Shinobu relies on speed, precision, and wisteria-based poisons rather than the physical strength used by most Hashira, but Doma adapts to her methods during the encounter.

Shinobu does not survive the confrontation. Kanao Tsuyuri arrives and sees Doma absorb her mentor, turning the unfinished battle into Kanao’s fight as well. Importantly, Doma is still alive when Infinity Castle I ends, so the movie does not provide the final resolution to that storyline.

That distinction matters because it is easy to mix the complete manga arc with the events of the first film. Infinity Castle I closes Shinobu’s part of the confrontation, but Doma’s fate remains unresolved on screen.

What Happens Between Zenitsu and Kaigaku?

Zenitsu’s battle is more self-contained. Kaigaku, his former senior disciple under Jigoro Kuwajima, has become the new Upper Rank Six, making their confrontation a conflict over both their shared training and the paths they chose afterward.

Zenitsu reveals Thunder Breathing, Seventh Form, a technique he created himself. It allows him to defeat Kaigaku and becomes one of the clearest signs that Zenitsu has developed beyond the frightened fighter audiences first met. He survives the encounter, although Yushiro has to intervene afterward.

Does Tanjiro Reach Muzan at the End?

No. Muzan remains inside the Infinity Castle, and the film ends before Tanjiro or the Hashira can bring the larger conflict to him. Nakime is still manipulating the castle’s layout, while Doma and Upper Rank One Kokushibo remain active opponents.

That is the real meaning of the ending. The Demon Slayer Corps has removed Akaza and Kaigaku, but it has also lost Shinobu, and several of its strongest fighters remain scattered through a battlefield Muzan still controls. Part 1 gives Tanjiro a major victory without pretending the final war has been won.

Infinity Castle I therefore ends on progress rather than closure. Tanjiro has reached a new level of awareness, Zenitsu has proven how far he has come, and Akaza’s story has finally been completed, but Muzan remains the destination. The first movie settles several pieces of the past while leaving the future of the Demon Slayer Corps hanging inside the castle.
