The Walking Dead: Dead City Season 3 Episode 7 spends much of its runtime making Negan look like the biggest danger on Manhattan. He has killed Fabian, admitted to killing the Dama, and apparently left Dillard with a brutal wound across his face, giving Renata more reason to believe that keeping him alive could put everyone else at risk. Yet the episode gradually reveals that Negan is not the person manipulating the situation, and the biggest danger is actually much closer to Renata than she realizes.

By the ending, Dillard emerges as one of Season 3’s most unexpected threats. Renata finally decides that killing Negan would go against the kind of community she has been trying to create, only for Dillard to reject her authority, turn on her, and expose just how much of the crisis surrounding Negan has been shaped by his own actions.

Does Renata Die in Dead City Season 3 Episode 7?

Yes, Renata dies in Dead City Season 3 Episode 7, and her death comes immediately after she makes one of her most important decisions as a leader. Maggie has been trying to convince her that executing Negan simply because everyone is afraid of what he might do would undermine everything Renata claims to believe about rebuilding civilization and living by rules rather than fear.

Luis also helps push his sister toward reconsidering the execution by reminding her of the values she once followed. Renata ultimately orders everyone to stand down and decides that Negan does not have to die, believing that living in a community means accepting its rules and working within them rather than answering every threat with immediate violence. Unfortunately, Dillard has already moved far beyond Renata’s way of thinking.

Dillard openly declares that he still intends to kill Negan, even after Renata orders him not to. When she reminds him that she is the one in charge, he refuses to accept her authority, and their confrontation turns deadly. Renata’s attempt to prevent one execution therefore ends with her becoming the episode’s most shocking casualty.

Why Does Dillard Kill Renata?

Dillard kills Renata because she becomes an obstacle to what he wants to do with Negan and, more importantly, because he no longer believes in the society she is trying to build. Renata still believes that surviving communities need rules, leadership, restraint, and some version of the civilization that existed before the apocalypse, while Dillard has reached the conclusion that those principles no longer have any real value.

For Dillard, the people who survived this long did so because they adapted to a world where the old moral rules could no longer protect them. He sees Renata’s attempt to rebuild a structured society as little more than pretending that the world can return to what it once was, and her decision to spare Negan confirms to him that she is not willing to make the choices he considers necessary.

Renata’s change of heart also threatens the situation Dillard has carefully helped create around Negan. He has turned Negan into an immediate public threat who supposedly attacked him and therefore needs to be eliminated before he hurts anyone else. Once Renata refuses to follow through with that execution, Dillard decides that she is no longer useful to his plans and kills her instead.

Did Negan Really Cut Dillard’s Face?

No, Negan did not give Dillard the facial wound that everyone believes he caused. Dillard claims that Negan attacked him inside the bar, pulled a knife, and sliced his face open, and the visible injury becomes one of the strongest pieces of evidence convincing the others that Negan has become dangerously unstable.

The story begins falling apart when Maggie finally speaks directly with Negan and mentions what supposedly happened to Dillard. Negan’s reaction makes it clear that he has no idea what she is talking about, which immediately tells Maggie that the version of events she has been given does not make sense. The episode’s accompanying behind-the-scenes material makes the deception even clearer by identifying Dillard’s scar as a self-inflicted wound.

That changes the way Dillard’s actions throughout the episode have to be viewed. He is not simply someone who becomes angry after being attacked by Negan, because he deliberately injures himself and then uses that injury to make Negan look even more dangerous. The wound is therefore part of a calculated attempt to manipulate Renata and everyone around her.

Why Does Dillard Hate Negan?

Dillard’s obsession with killing Negan appears to be strongly connected to what happened with the Croat and the guilt he still carries from that experience. Renata confronts him about allowing what happened at the hospital to influence his judgment, while Dillard believes that he should have acted differently when he had an opportunity to prevent more suffering.

That guilt becomes tied to Negan because the Croat’s brutality cannot be separated from the influence Negan once had over him. Dillard begins treating Negan’s past as proof that allowing dangerous people to remain alive eventually creates more violence, even though Renata points out that Negan and the Croat are not the same person. By this point, however, Dillard is no longer interested in making that distinction.

Negan becomes a symbol of everything Dillard believes should have been stopped earlier. Killing him therefore seems to offer Dillard a way to correct what he sees as his previous failure, but his obsession ultimately pushes him toward becoming just as dangerous as the people he believes he is protecting others from.

Dillard’s Plan Is Bigger Than Killing Negan

Renata’s death reveals that Dillard’s agenda is no longer limited to killing Negan. Almost immediately after turning against her, he starts attacking Renata’s entire vision for the community and encourages the people around him to abandon the rules she was trying to establish.

Dillard argues that the survivors should take the available guns and food rather than continue pretending they are rebuilding an orderly society. His message appeals to fear and self-preservation, and instead of offering another system to replace Renata’s, he effectively tells everyone that survival should come before the idea of civilization itself.

Maggie quickly becomes the next person standing in his way. Dillard knows that she will not simply allow him and his followers to take control of the community’s resources, and she also represents another person capable of challenging the worldview he is trying to impose. His decision that Maggie must die makes it clear that Renata was only the first major obstacle he was willing to remove.

What Does Dillard’s Betrayal Mean for the Season 3 Finale?

Dillard’s transformation completely changes the conflict heading into the Dead City Season 3 finale. Negan begins Episode 7 looking like the person everyone else needs protection from, but by the ending, Maggie understands that someone has been manipulating the story surrounding him and that Dillard is far more dangerous than he initially appeared.

The situation is especially dangerous because Dillard is not acting alone anymore. By turning Renata’s death into an opportunity to challenge her leadership and recruit other survivors to his side, he creates an internal conflict inside a community that is already struggling to survive the larger dangers of Manhattan. Maggie, Negan, Hershel, and Luis are now facing a threat that has grown from within rather than another enemy arriving from outside.

Dillard’s rise also gives the finale a conflict that is about more than simply whether Negan survives. Renata believed that rebuilding society required people to restrain their worst instincts even when doing so was difficult, while Dillard believes those old principles are exactly what survivors need to abandon. Their opposing ideas ultimately cost Renata her life and leave Maggie confronting a man who is willing to kill anyone who refuses to accept his version of survival.

Dead City Episode 7 Ending Explained

The ending of Dead City Season 3 Episode 7 reveals that Dillard has been far more calculating than his eccentric behavior initially suggested. He wounds himself and blames Negan, helps create the impression that Negan has become an uncontrollable threat, pushes Renata toward executing him, and then kills her when she chooses restraint instead.

Renata dies because she finally refuses to let fear determine who deserves to live, while Dillard embraces the exact opposite philosophy. For him, survival means abandoning the rules of the old world and removing anyone who stands in the way, which is why Maggie becomes his next target almost immediately after Renata’s death.

That makes Dillard the biggest immediate threat heading into the Season 3 finale. What first looks like another episode about whether Maggie and the others can trust Negan instead becomes the story of a community being taken over from within, with Dillard revealing himself as the villain no one expected.
