Winnie Lightner was able to sing out a whole song in less than sixty seconds, which earned her the nickname “Song a Minute Girl” on Broadway. Her brash and boisterous manner was a perfect fit for Warner’s Vitaphone shorts when sound was introduced, and Winnie Lightner quickly rose to become one of the most famous Warner actors. In 1929, Lightner’s “Gold Diggers of Broadway” was a success, and the all-technicolor version of “The Life of the Party” was an even greater box office draw than its predecessor. In spite of the enormous success of her first few films, Warner Brothers started to cast Winnie in tragic parts, and by 1933, she was working for MGM as a supporting player, playing second fiddle to stars such as Joan Crawford. Lightner and Director Roy Del Ruth finally got married after meeting each other on the set of “Gold Diggers,” which Roy Del Ruth had directed. Winnie had a son from a previous marriage named Richard Lightner (he legally changed his name to Lightner) when she married Del Ruth. They had a son who they called Thomas, and he ended up working in the film industry in Hollywood. After she gave up acting, she never once considered going back to it. Friends and family never heard her speaking of her days of fame, and the Del Ruths rarely entertained the movie crowd in their home. Winnie died in 1971 and is buried next to Roy at the Mission San Fernando in southern California. Winnie Lightner was born on September 17, 1899 in Greenport, United States.
