“The Dog Stars” gives Ridley Scott a relatively small group of survivors to work with, which is appropriate for a movie about a world where almost everyone is gone. Rather than filling the screen with dozens of heroes and villains, the story concentrates on people who have developed very different ways of surviving the same catastrophe. Some have turned themselves into soldiers, others have tried to preserve communities, and Hig remains convinced that simply staying alive cannot be the whole point.
Leading Scott’s adaptation of Peter Heller’s novel is Jacob Elordi, joined by Josh Brolin, Margaret Qualley and Guy Pearce. Allison Janney and Benedict Wong have important supporting parts, while Jasper, Hig’s dog, becomes almost as essential to the film as its human cast.
Jacob Elordi Plays Hig
Jacob Elordi stars as Hig, a young pilot who has survived the pandemic but has not really moved beyond everything it took from him. He lives at an abandoned airfield with Jasper and Bangley, maintaining their defenses while regularly taking a Cessna into the surrounding wilderness. When he picks up an unexplained radio transmission, curiosity finally becomes stronger than caution.
Hig gives Elordi a very different role from the characters that made him widely recognizable. The Australian actor broke through internationally as Nate Jacobs in HBO’s “Euphoria” and later appeared in “Priscilla,” “Saltburn,” “Frankenstein” and “Wuthering Heights.” Here, his physical presence is useful, but Hig works because Elordi also has to make the character’s loneliness believable.

His relationship with Jasper is especially important. Ridley Scott has said that preserving Hig’s connection with the dog was one of the elements from Peter Heller’s novel he considered essential to the adaptation. Jasper is not merely a survival companion but one of Hig’s remaining connections to the wife he lost.
Josh Brolin Is Bangley
Josh Brolin plays Bangley, the military survivalist sharing Hig’s fortified airfield. If Hig still wants to believe that human life can become meaningful again, Bangley is much more concerned with making sure they live through tomorrow. Weapons, defensive positions and practical preparation are his language.
Brolin has plenty of experience playing men whose calm exterior conceals considerable danger. His filmography includes “No Country for Old Men,” “Sicario,” “Dune,” “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Dune: Part Two.” Bangley allows him to bring some dry humor to the survival genre without making the character feel harmless.
The relationship between Hig and Bangley is deliberately uneasy. They need each other, but their ideas about what survival should look like are fundamentally different. That conflict becomes increasingly important once Hig’s radio discovery gives him a reason to leave their carefully protected world.
Margaret Qualley Plays Cima
Margaret Qualley appears as Cima, a former medical student who has survived in another isolated part of the country with her father. Hig encounters her after his search carries him beyond the territory he normally patrols. Cima represents something he has almost stopped expecting to find: another person interested in building a life rather than simply defending one.
Qualley’s recent work has ranged from the Netflix drama “Maid” to “Poor Things,” “Kinds of Kindness” and “The Substance.” Her casting also gives the movie a performer capable of keeping quieter scenes compelling after long stretches dominated by survival action.
Cima is not simply introduced as a convenient stranger waiting for Hig. She farms, protects her home and understands how dangerous this new world has become. Her presence changes the emotional direction of Hig’s journey because for the first time, the possibility of beginning again becomes tangible.
Guy Pearce Is Pops
Guy Pearce plays Pops, Cima’s father, and he is understandably suspicious when Hig arrives. Pops has survived by protecting both his home and his daughter, which puts him in a position similar to Bangley’s. Neither man is eager to trust an outsider simply because that outsider appears friendly.
Pearce is known for films including “L.A. Confidential,” “Memento,” “The Hurt Locker” and “The Brutalist.” He has also worked with Scott’s science-fiction world before through “Prometheus” and “Alien: Covenant.”
Putting Pops and Bangley on opposite ends of Hig’s journey creates an interesting parallel. Both older survivors understand violence better than Hig would like, but they also show him different versions of what protection can become after society disappears.
Allison Janney Plays Darlene
Allison Janney plays Darlene, described by Disney as an eccentric former stewardess connected to Grand Junction. Her role expands the movie beyond the small survivor groups surrounding Hig and Cima. She is another example of the strange lives that have continued after the pandemic erased the society those people once understood.
Janney brings a formidable screen history to a comparatively compact supporting role. She is best known for “The West Wing,” “Mom” and her Oscar-winning performance in “I, Tonya,” alongside a long career across film and television. Her presence gives even a smaller character an immediate sense of personality.
Benedict Wong Plays Aaron
Benedict Wong portrays Aaron, a survivor associated with a hidden Mennonite community. Official Disney material describes him as a quiet, dependable figure helping that community endure the post-pandemic world. His story gives the film another answer to the question Hig has been asking all along: whether people can still organize themselves around something other than fear.
Wong is familiar to audiences from “Doctor Strange,” the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe, “The Martian” and “3 Body Problem.” In “The Dog Stars,” his character is positioned away from the more heavily armed survivalism represented by Bangley.
Who Plays Jasper the Dog?
Jasper deserves a place in any “The Dog Stars” cast guide because the dog is central to Hig’s life. Three trained dogs were used to portray Jasper during production, according to Ridley Scott. One of them, Rak Jasper, later appeared alongside Jacob Elordi at the film’s London premiere.
Scott has spoken about Elordi’s ease working with the animals, something that helped the relationship avoid looking like a conventional actor-and-trained-dog performance. Jasper carries emotional weight that no human character can completely replace. In a world where Hig has lost almost everyone from his old life, the dog remains proof that affection has survived along with him.
The principal cast is completed by performers including Ewen Bremner as Crossbow Hunter, James Craze as Logan, Sam Spruell as John, Sai Bennett as Melissa and Sebastian Rokison-Woodall as Ben, among others. Yet “The Dog Stars” is built primarily around Hig’s encounters with Bangley, Cima, Pops, Darlene and Aaron. Their different methods of surviving allow Scott’s film to ask a more interesting question than who can stay alive longest: what kind of person is worth becoming when there is almost nobody left to see it.
