Sybylla Melvyn’s decision to board a train with her manuscript rather than marry Harry Beecham feels like an ending, but it is also an unusually tempting beginning. For now, however, Netflix has not renewed My Brilliant Career for Season 2. The six-episode drama only premiered globally on August 13, 2026, and no second season has been announced as of August 16. The encouraging part is that Netflix would not have to invent Sybylla’s next chapter from scratch. Miles Franklin wrote another novel featuring Sybylla, My Career Goes Bung, which follows her into the literary world after becoming a published author.
That makes the show’s future more interesting than a typical adaptation that has simply reached the last page of its source material. The bigger question is whether Netflix wants My Brilliant Career to remain a complete coming-of-age story or turn Sybylla’s “career” into the subject of a second season.
Has Netflix Renewed My Brilliant Career for Season 2?
No. Netflix has not announced My Brilliant Career Season 2, and there is currently no confirmed production date, release window or returning cast list.
That is not particularly surprising so soon after release. Netflix’s original announcement commissioned a six-part adaptation of Franklin’s 1901 novel, with Philippa Northeast playing Sybylla and Christopher Chung as Harry. The streamer has continued to promote the show simply as a series rather than announcing a follow-up alongside its August launch.
The first season also gives Netflix the option of stopping. Sybylla finishes her manuscript, rejects the security of marriage and boards a train toward a life she has chosen for herself. Nothing essential is left unresolved simply to manufacture another season.
Yet that train is also a remarkably convenient place from which to continue.

Miles Franklin Already Wrote Another Sybylla Story
A second season has genuine source material because Franklin followed My Brilliant Career with My Career Goes Bung. The book was written soon after her breakthrough novel but was not published until 1946, decades after My Brilliant Career appeared in 1901.
Its premise almost sounds designed for the Netflix show’s next phase. Sybylla is no longer merely dreaming about becoming a writer. Her book has been published, she has gained sudden attention, and she moves into fashionable Sydney society as she tries to establish herself in the literary world. The success creates a fresh problem because people believe they recognize themselves in her supposedly autobiographical writing and object to the way they have been depicted.
Season 1 asks whether Sybylla is brave enough to choose writing over the life everyone else has selected for her. A sequel could ask what happens after she gets exactly what she wanted.
Success would not suddenly make Sybylla’s life easier. It would expose her to critics, patrons, social expectations and another collection of men with opinions about what kind of woman she ought to become. That progression would let the show preserve its central conflict without simply repeating another Harry-versus-career dilemma.
But My Career Goes Bung Could Not Be Adapted Literally
There is one substantial complication: My Career Goes Bung is not a conventional sequel with perfectly matching continuity.
Franklin plays a metafictional trick with Sybylla. The later novel treats My Brilliant Career itself as a book written by its Sybylla, and details about her family and history do not neatly correspond with the first novel. Literary scholarship has consequently argued that the Sybylla of My Career Goes Bung should not simply be treated as exactly the same fictional character continuing an uninterrupted biography.
For Netflix, that may actually be useful rather than fatal.
Liz Doran’s adaptation has already shown that it is willing to reshape Franklin’s material. Harry’s Chinese-Australian background is new to this version, while characters and storylines involving First Nations Australians and queer lives were deliberately expanded to represent people who would have existed in Australia around Federation but were absent or marginalized in the original text.
A second season could therefore borrow the strongest idea from My Career Goes Bung, Sybylla confronting fame and the Sydney literary establishment, without treating every detail of Franklin’s later novel as mandatory continuity.

Philippa Northeast Already Wants to See Sybylla’s Next Adventure
Philippa Northeast has made it clear that she can imagine Sybylla beyond the first season. Asked about the possibility of continuing the character, Northeast said she would like to see Sybylla placed in different landscapes and challenged by new environments.
That fits the finale unusually well. Season 1 spends much of its time placing Sybylla inside environments created by other people: her family’s struggling home, her grandmother’s privileged Caddagat world, the McSwats’ household and Harry’s Five Bob estate. Her final train journey is different because Sybylla is choosing the destination for herself.
Sydney would change the show’s visual and social world immediately. Instead of another season dominated by marriage prospects and rural estates, Sybylla could enter publishing circles, encounter other writers and discover that artistic independence comes with its own compromises.
That would also allow Northeast’s Sybylla to grow without sanding away the qualities that make her entertaining. She can be ambitious, impulsive, funny and difficult while facing a problem teenage Sybylla has never experienced before: people actually paying attention to what she writes.
Would Harry Return in Season 2?
Harry could return, but a second season would not need to reverse Sybylla’s decision and put them immediately back together.
Christopher Chung has said that Harry still profoundly loves Sybylla despite her refusal to marry him. He has even expressed interest in seeing what becomes of Harry after a life built around duty and integrity fails to give him the future he expected, joking about the possibility of a much less restrained version of the character.
That is probably more promising than undoing the finale. Harry accepting Sybylla’s decision is part of what makes their separation work. If Season 2 immediately had Sybylla regret choosing her career, it would weaken the point of the first season’s ending.
Keeping Harry in the story at some distance could be far more effective. Sybylla could discover herself professionally in Sydney while Harry confronts a life no longer organized around winning her back. A later reunion would then carry the weight of two people who have actually changed rather than a romance temporarily delayed by a finale.
What Would My Brilliant Career Season 2 Probably Be About?
If Netflix continues the series, the strongest direction is Sybylla becoming a published writer and discovering that achieving her brilliant career is considerably messier than dreaming about it.
My Career Goes Bung supplies the framework. Sybylla enters Sydney society, experiences literary fame and discovers that readers are eager to confuse a writer with the stories she publishes. That idea is particularly fitting after Season 1 ends with her writing about the world she knows.
It would also bring the Netflix adaptation unexpectedly close to Miles Franklin’s own experience. My Brilliant Career brought Franklin considerable attention, while its perceived autobiographical connections caused discomfort and controversy. Her later writing turned that experience back into fiction.
For now, though, that remains possibility rather than plan. Netflix has announced no Season 2. The first season can stand by itself, and Sybylla’s departure works precisely because we do not need to know every station she reaches next.
But if My Brilliant Career returns, the story does not need another marriage proposal to justify it. Season 1 was about Sybylla fighting for the right to become a writer. The far more interesting Season 2 story is what happens when the world finally reads what she has to say.
