Dani Rojas is not leaving Richmond for Newcastle, at least not because of the offer presented in Ted Lasso Season 4 Episode 7. Dani’s agent, Derrick, tells Rebecca and Leslie that his client has interest from another club and eventually names Newcastle as the team supposedly trying to sign him. The threat initially puts Richmond in a difficult position because Derrick uses it to push for better terms. Zelda Southport and Leslie eventually expose the story, however, when a contact at Newcastle confirms that no such offer has been made. Derrick has been using a nonexistent transfer approach as negotiating leverage.
The twist means Richmond is not suddenly losing Dani. More importantly, it turns what appears to be a player-transfer storyline into a story about an agent trying to pressure the club.
Why Does Derrick Claim Dani Wants to Leave Richmond?
Derrick arrives at Rebecca’s office claiming that Dani is unhappy with the current situation at Richmond. He says another team is interested, but initially refuses to reveal which club has supposedly made the approach. That uncertainty gives him leverage because Rebecca cannot easily judge how serious the threat is.
The discussion is also not limited to Dani. Derrick begins pushing for Richmond to reconsider terms involving both Dani and Roy Kent, making it clear that he sees the alleged transfer interest as an opportunity to improve his clients’ position. Rebecca and Leslie immediately suspect that the conversation may be more negotiation than genuine crisis.
They cannot simply ignore him, though. Dani has a long history with Richmond, and allowing an unhappy player to become distracted by another club would create a genuine problem if Derrick were telling the truth.
Why Does Zelda Get Involved?
Zelda Southport arrives at Richmond at exactly the right time. Her relationship with Rebecca has previously been more social than professional, but Episode 7 gives Rebecca a chance to see how useful Zelda can be when someone needs to be pressured into revealing more than they intended.
Zelda calls Derrick while adopting a Chicago accent and turns the conversation into a small performance. Rebecca participates as her supposed American secretary, allowing them to approach Derrick without making the call feel like another straightforward conversation with Richmond’s owner.
The tactic works because Derrick eventually becomes specific. Instead of continuing to hide behind vague claims about another club, he names Newcastle as the team interested in Dani. That name gives Leslie something they can actually verify.
Did Newcastle Really Make an Offer for Dani Rojas?
No. Leslie contacts someone he knows at Newcastle and learns that there is no offer for Dani. According to the information Richmond receives, Newcastle has not made the approach Derrick described.
That discovery immediately changes the negotiation. Derrick can no longer present himself as the messenger bringing Richmond an uncomfortable transfer reality. He has apparently fabricated interest from another club to create pressure and improve his bargaining position.
The episode also treats the false claim as serious enough that Derrick could be reported over his conduct. Instead of walking away with improved terms for his clients, he puts himself in trouble by pushing the bluff too far.
Is Dani Actually Unhappy at Richmond?
Episode 7 does not give viewers enough evidence to conclude that Dani himself is trying to force a move. Most of the supposed crisis comes through Derrick, whose credibility collapses once the Newcastle claim is checked. That makes it difficult to know how much of his description of Dani’s unhappiness is genuine.
There is an important difference between an agent attempting to improve a player’s situation and the player personally demanding to leave. Derrick presents Dani as dissatisfied, but the episode does not show Dani negotiating with Rebecca or announcing that he wants to play somewhere else.
For now, the safest conclusion is that the Newcastle threat is Derrick’s tactic rather than Dani’s confirmed plan. Nothing in the episode establishes that Dani has decided his future lies away from Richmond.
Why Was Roy Kent Included in Derrick’s Negotiation?
Derrick’s attempt to connect Roy with the conversation makes his strategy look even more like leverage-building. Rather than discussing one straightforward offer for Dani, he uses the supposed outside interest to reopen broader questions about what his clients should receive from Richmond.
That is another reason Rebecca and Leslie become suspicious. A genuine transfer approach could still lead an agent to renegotiate, but Derrick’s expanding list of demands makes his refusal to identify the interested club increasingly difficult to accept. Once he finally says Newcastle, the entire story becomes testable.
Roy himself later appears unaware of what Derrick has been doing. When the agent hangs around him at work, Roy has little patience for him, reinforcing the idea that Derrick has been operating far more aggressively than his clients necessarily asked him to.
Why Does Rebecca Hire Zelda After the Dani Situation?
Exposing Derrick proves to Rebecca that Zelda’s unconventional instincts can have practical value to Richmond. Zelda is intrusive, theatrical and willing to manipulate a conversation in ways Rebecca probably would not attempt herself, but those qualities are exactly what break the stalemate with Derrick.
Their later conversation also reveals that Rebecca does not want to spend her life carrying other people’s problems. When Zelda uses the familiar scorpion-and-frog analogy, Rebecca rejects the idea that her role should always be to carry someone across the river. She would rather build a bridge.
By the end of Episode 7, Rebecca asks Zelda to join Richmond as a Special Adviser. The Dani situation therefore ends without a transfer, but it produces a significant change behind the scenes at the club.
Dani remains with Richmond, Newcastle’s supposed interest is exposed as a lie, and Derrick loses the leverage he believed he had created. What initially looks like a major player exit instead becomes the incident that gives Zelda an official role inside Richmond.
