Insidious: Out of the Further makes the franchise’s biggest cast change since Insidious: Chapter 3. The Lambert family is no longer at the center of the haunting. Instead, the sixth movie introduces Gemma, a single mother with an unusual connection to The Further, while retaining Lin Shaye’s Elise Rainier as the link to everything that came before. Amelia Eve leads the new ensemble alongside Brandon Perea, Maisie Richardson-Sellers, Sam Spruell, Island Austin and Laura Gordon. Sony Pictures has confirmed only some character names ahead of the movie’s August 21, 2026 release, so several roles remain deliberately under wraps.
Amelia Eve as Gemma
Amelia Eve plays Gemma, the new protagonist taking over the position previously occupied by characters such as Josh and Dalton Lambert. Gemma is raising her daughter in the same house where she grew up when she discovers that she can enter The Further. Her ability comes with a dangerous variation on the franchise’s established astral-projection rules because she can apparently bring beings from that realm back into the physical world. Once those entities understand what Gemma can do, she becomes valuable to them rather than simply another person they want to possess.
Horror audiences will probably recognize Eve most quickly as Jamie, the gardener at the center of the love story in Mike Flanagan’s The Haunting of Bly Manor. She subsequently appeared as Maru in Leopard Skin and Kay Robertson in The Blind. Gemma gives Eve a very different supernatural role, moving her from someone living alongside a haunting to a character whose own abilities are responsible for changing how the supernatural can enter the real world.
Lin Shaye as Elise Rainier
Lin Shaye returns as Elise Rainier, making her the crucial bridge between the established Insidious mythology and this new family. Elise died in the first film, but death has never removed her from the franchise. Her spirit exists within The Further, allowing her to continue helping people threatened by the entities trapped there. In Out of the Further, Elise turns her attention toward Gemma and attempts to help her understand a gift that may be considerably more dangerous than ordinary astral projection.
Shaye has played Elise since the original Insidious, later becoming the central character of the prequels Chapter 3 and The Last Key. Her presence here matters because Patrick Wilson’s Josh Lambert, Rose Byrne’s Renai and Ty Simpkins’ Dalton have not been announced as part of the new cast. Writer-director Jacob Chase is therefore beginning a different family story without severing the supernatural continuity that has held the series together since 2010.

Maisie Richardson-Sellers as Claire
Maisie Richardson-Sellers plays Claire, one of the few supporting characters whose identity has been revealed before release. Claire appears in an early tattoo-parlor sequence where Elise communicates through her in order to reach Gemma’s family. Rather than simply seeing Elise as a ghost, Claire effectively becomes a channel for her, with Elise’s presence also appearing through Claire’s reflection. The scene appears designed to introduce the movie’s expanded ideas about how people can communicate across the boundary of The Further.
Richardson-Sellers is familiar to genre television audiences from DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, where she played Amaya Jiwe and later Charlie. Her other credits include The Originals, Jagged Mind, Nine Perfect Strangers and Talamasca: The Secret Order. Claire may not be the movie’s protagonist, but her ability to act as a conduit for Elise makes her immediately more important to the mythology than an ordinary supporting character.
Sam Spruell as Cyrus
Sam Spruell takes on the movie’s major new supernatural threat, Cyrus. Entertainment Weekly identifies Cyrus as the malevolent entity drawn toward Gemma because of her ability to bring inhabitants of The Further into reality. That gives him a slightly different objective from many previous Insidious demons. Rather than merely trying to claim a vulnerable human body, Cyrus has reason to exploit the person who can potentially give him access to the living world.
Cyrus also appears to have considerably more personality than the franchise’s largely silent monsters. Shaye described Spruell’s character as frightening but unexpectedly funny and compared his scale and theatrical presence to Dracula. Spruell is well suited to that kind of unsettling villain after performances in Fargo, Snow White and the Huntsman, The North Water and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. If Cyrus works, Out of the Further could gain something the series has rarely attempted: a supernatural antagonist capable of being threatening through conversation as well as appearance.
Who Does Brandon Perea Play?
Brandon Perea’s character has not yet been officially named. Sony gives Perea prominent billing alongside Amelia Eve and Lin Shaye, and Deadline previously reported that he had joined the project in a lead role. However, neither Sony’s current synopsis nor the material released so far establishes his character’s relationship to Gemma. Calling him Gemma’s husband, brother, friend or another family member at this stage would be speculation.
Perea arrives with useful horror credentials after playing Angel Torres in Jordan Peele’s Nope. He also appeared as Boone in Twisters and Alfonso “French” Sosa in Netflix’s The OA. His high placement in Sony’s billing suggests a significant role, but the unusual lack of a character name is probably something worth respecting until the studio reveals more.
Island Austin and Laura Gordon Join the New Family Story
Island Austin and Laura Gordon are confirmed cast members, although Sony has not publicly identified their characters. Austin has been part of the ensemble since the September 2025 casting announcements, while Gordon joined shortly afterward. Because the official synopsis specifically says Gemma is raising a daughter, it may be tempting to assign one of the actresses to that relationship based on age or trailer footage. There is not yet sufficient official information to do that confidently.
Gordon will be familiar to horror viewers from Late Night with the Devil, where she played June Ross-Mitchell, and she has also appeared in Saw V, Hotel Cocaine and the Australian series The Claremont Murders. Austin is a newer screen presence, making Out of the Further one of her most visible feature-film credits so far. The secrecy surrounding both roles is another sign that Sony is revealing the mechanics of Gemma’s supernatural ability more readily than the structure of the family around her.
Are Patrick Wilson and the Lambert Family Returning?
There is currently no confirmed return for Patrick Wilson, Rose Byrne or Ty Simpkins as Josh, Renai and Dalton Lambert. The official material presents Out of the Further as the beginning of a story about a new family, while Shaye has said that the Lambert storyline is essentially bookended. Elise is the returning character who allows the sixth film to remain firmly inside the same continuity.
That makes the cast change more meaningful than simply replacing one haunted family with another. Gemma possesses an ability the Lamberts never had, Claire introduces a new form of communication with Elise, and Cyrus seems capable of exploiting The Further in a different way. Insidious: Out of the Further is keeping its most recognizable guide while surrounding her with characters who can push the mythology somewhere genuinely new, which is probably the smartest reason to change the cast in the first place.
