Hilda Martin looks noticeably different across several stages of Roxane Gay’s younger life in Surviving the Silence: The Roxane Gay Story. The transformation is convincing enough that viewers may assume Martin physically gained a significant amount of weight for the role. That does not appear to be the case. The larger changes in her appearance were created with prosthetic makeup designed to show Roxane’s changing body without requiring Martin to undergo extreme physical changes herself.

Did Hilda Martin Really Gain Weight for the Role?

There is no indication that Hilda Martin gained the amount of weight represented in the Lifetime movie. Instead, prosthetic pieces were used to alter her face and body as Roxane grows older. That allowed Martin to portray different stages of Roxane’s adolescence while filming scenes according to the production schedule rather than having to change her own body between sequences.

The technique was especially important for this story because Roxane’s physical transformation is not simply a visual way of showing that time has passed. Her changing body is connected directly to the trauma she experienced as a child. The movie therefore needed to show those changes while treating them as part of Roxane’s emotional history rather than as a conventional movie makeover.

How Were Hilda Martin’s Prosthetics Made?

Special effects artist Dallas Harvey has been associated with the prosthetic work created for Martin. The process reportedly involved lifecasting the actress so that silicone pieces could be sculpted specifically around her features. The makeup could then change Martin’s appearance while still allowing her facial expressions and performance to remain visible.

That is one reason the transformation looks relatively natural in the finished film. The production did not simply place Martin in an oversized costume and expect that alone to communicate Roxane’s changing body. The prosthetic work helps different stages feel connected while allowing the audience to continue recognizing the same young Roxane.

Why Does Roxane Gay’s Body Change in the True Story?

Gay has written extensively about the relationship between her childhood trauma and her body in Hunger: A Memoir of (My) Body, the memoir on which Surviving the Silence is based. After being sexually assaulted at 12, Gay began using food and weight as a form of protection. She believed that becoming larger could make her less vulnerable to the kind of attention that had already caused her enormous harm.

That context is crucial to understanding Martin’s transformation. The movie is not suggesting that young Roxane suddenly gains weight for no reason, nor is the change presented primarily as a health storyline. It represents one of the ways she tried to survive an experience she was unable to process openly at the time.

Hilda Martin’s Transformation Is More Than Makeup

Martin’s prosthetics work because the movie does not treat them as the performance itself. Her job is still to portray a young girl whose relationship with herself changes after trauma, while the makeup gives the audience a visual indication of what is happening over time. Without that emotional context, the physical transformation would have far less meaning.

So, Hilda Martin did not need to dramatically gain weight to play young Roxane Gay. Prosthetic makeup created the most significant changes viewers see in Surviving the Silence. The transformation supports the story Gay originally told in Hunger, where changes to her body were inseparable from the ways she tried to feel safe again.
