In an agreement with Amazon, the Nottingham-based company Games Workshop has decided to bring its sci-fi Warhammer 40,000 world to the big screen. As a result, the company is moving to Hollywood.
The company, ‘Games Workshop’ founded in 1975 by John Peake, Ian Livingstone, and Steve Jackson, which creates miniatures for fantasy wargames, will create movies and television shows based on its characters.
In a statement released on Friday, Games Workshop said that it and Amazon had “agreed in principle” to allow the company’s intellectual property to be adapted for cinema and television.
The Warhammer 40,000 world will get the first transfer of rights. The deal’s financial details were kept between the two businesses.
On Friday, shares of the London-listed Games Workshop rose by 15%.
Amazon’s deal with Warhammer shows how the US tech giant is trying to compete with Netflix and other streaming services. It happened after Amazon released The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, a hit TV show based on fantasy books by J.R.R. Tolkein. The first episode of the show was seen by more than 25 million people around the world.
Both sides have agreed on the business terms, but Games Workshop said that a contract still needs to be worked out. A further announcement is going to be made at a date that has not yet been determined.
Amazon has announced that the actor known for playing Superman, Henry Cavill, will lead the cast of Warhammer 40,000 and also serve as an executive producer.
